When will they learn?
When will the government follow the extraordinary example of the Springbok rugby and Protea cricket teams? Rugby and cricket are proof that we can have an integrated society (a Rainbow Nation) in South Africa.
South Africa are world champions in two major TEAM SPORTS.
SA rugby in the heady days of our new democracy grew through the extraordinary leadership of Francois Pienaar, Morne du Plessis and Kitch Christie through to the incredible leadership of Rassie Erasmus and Siya Kolisi, with so many others in support. This is more than sport; it is a movement that can be celebrated, but more importantly, followed to the letter.
Temba Bavuma and Shukri Conrad have now taken cricket to the same level of importance, with different leadership styles yet the same qualities. Cricket took a longer route, having to navigate the disastrous Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandal.
The South African government and officials must openly and judiciously navigate their corruption scandals and the Zondo Commission. Without open and ruthless justice, this country cannot move forward. Fortunately for Cricket SA, Sean Pollock picked up the pieces, post-Hansie, with dignity, grace and commitment and put us back on track.
The government of national unity (GNU) MUST do the same.
Team sports require discipline, sacrifice, collaboration, learnt skills, teamwork, communication, leadership and resilience. These sports foster social relationships, boost self-esteem and improve mental health. Furthermore, athletes develop important qualities like respect, accountability and a strong work ethic.
Can the GNU government and coalitions understand that, as the national teams play for their country and every person, so should they? Our political leaders need to shed their so-called importance of position or party and release South Africa to all its glory. The people of South Africa are crying out for this, and we can play our part. DM

MK Party DP John Hlophe confirms he fired Ndhlela, asserts confidence in Chief Whip Makhubele

Image: File The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has confirmed that Colleen Makhubele remains firmly in her position as Chief Whip, despite purported suggestions of a petition calling for her removal. At a press briefing held in Parliament on Thursday, MKP parliamentary leader Dr John Hlophe said a letter had been sent to party president Jacob Zuma to oust Makhubele were entirely false. 'There is no letter, there is no petition, in terms of which MPs are calling for the head of the Chief Whip. This is a figment of someone's imagination,' said Hlophe. 'Quite frankly, I would have been the first person to receive that petition. I asked President Zuma as late as last night. There is no such letter. Comrade Colleen Makhubele remains the Chief Whip. She is very good. She is very effective.' The party said recent internal changes, including the removal of spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela from its whippery, were strategic and administrative, not evidence of factionalism. Hlophe explained that the MKP is reorienting itself towards legislative impact and preparing constitutional amendments, including a proposed revision of Section 235 of the Constitution, which relates to self-determination. 'We don't believe South Africa belongs to just anyone who lives here,' Hlophe said. 'You must be a citizen of this country before you can say, 'I am a South African.' You can't visit here for two weeks and say, 'I love Constantia, I live here now, I must benefit'. 'Initially, he said he hadn't received the letter. When it became clear that he had, he changed the story and said the signature on the letter was forged. I can confirm that the letter came from my office.' Makhubele said the rumours had caused unnecessary disruption and she expressed disappointment at how the matter played out publicly. 'As a new Chief Whip, it's only been a month, it's been a very stormy time,' said Makhubele. 'I must say it has also been productive, and I appreciate the full cooperation of all MKP caucus members. I want to thank President Zuma and the leadership for entrusting me with this responsibility.' Responding to the rumoured petition against her, Makhubele said, 'There is no such letter. I haven't seen it. The caucus hasn't seen it. We're coming from a caucus meeting, and we're all shocked. It has dented our image, and we want to ensure this never happens again.' She emphasised that the MKP caucus is made up of members from diverse political backgrounds but unified under one constitutional vision. 'All of us, whether we came from COPE, ACDP, the DA or the Patriotic Alliance, have aligned ourselves with the MK Party constitution and the people's mandate,' she said. Hlophe added that the restructuring of the party's parliamentary leadership, including the removal of a dedicated whip for communications, was part of a broader shift to prioritise legislative and constitutional work. 'We don't want to be just an opposition party,' he said. 'We regard ourselves as a government in waiting. That means realigning how we work in Parliament so that we're not only active, but effective.' The party also introduced its new portfolio leaders, described as equivalent to shadow ministers, who will lead on key areas such as public service, land reform, and economic transformation. Makhubele said the MKP's legislative priorities will include land expropriation without compensation, decolonisation of the economy, and constitutional recognition of traditional leaders. 'This is why we are aligning our whippery to our strategic vision. The whip on legislation is critical for us. When we come into power, there are specific laws we want to govern with, and we must already be preparing the ground for that,' she said. She also committed to stronger constituency work and deeper public engagement: 'We want our presence in committees and Parliament to have an impact. We are going to mobilise our grassroots and sharpen our focus to deal with the failures of the so-called Government of National Unity.' Hlophe concluded by urging the public and media to distinguish between internal party administration and deliberate misinformation. 'These are operational changes, not a caucus crisis,' he said. 'The Chief Whip is not going anywhere.'

SOLD: Sale of SuperSport United confirmed
SuperSport United have officially been sold to Siwelele Football Club and are waiting for the PSL to approve the deal. This was confirmed in a statement by SuperSport International on Thursday, which added that after a closed bidding process, Siwelele were awarded the rights to purchase the Tshwane side. 'SuperSport International would like to confirm the sale of its Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, SuperSport United, to Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd. 'Following a closed bidding process, Siwelele F.C was awarded the rights to purchase the three-time Premiership winners, pending approval by the PSL Executive Committee. 'The sale of the club comes as SuperSport makes strategic shifts to allow us to remain the biggest broadcaster in Africa and a leading global competitor. Shifts in the market, as well as the need to innovate in accordance with our core business, have necessitated focused direction to allow SuperSport to remain the best sports content provider on the continent and a leader in broadcast innovation,''' said SuperSport CEO, Rendani Ramovha. Siwelele chairman Calvin le John said they are happy to have won the bid to purchase the club. 'As Siwelele FC, we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing with a rich winning tradition in the PSL. SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group laid an incredible 30-year platform that we wish to build upon, should we get the final vote of approval from the PSL executive committee,' Le John said. 'Out of respect for the PSL executive committee's processes, Siwelele F.C, MultiChoice and SuperSport will not be making any further statements pending the decision of the PSL.' Reports suggest that Matsatsantsa were sold for R50 million and will relocate to Bloemfontein in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season and will be called Siwelele FC. SuperSport United endured a horror 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, finishing 14th and narrowly avoiding the promotion-relegation playoffs. 'Italy have potential to case damage,' says Boks' Bongi Mbonambi

The Boks are putting out a strong starting front row for the game, with Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx and Wilco Louw kicking things off and they will be backed up by a just as strong a front row on the bench, namely Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Mbonambi and Vincent Koch. But despite the expected dominance from both Bok front rows, Mbonambi believes Italy's forward performance in the Six Nations shows that they will be a challenge. 'The Italian pack proved what they can do in the Six Nations. We saw how hard they scrummed against top packs. They have a system that they believe in. They've proven themselves to be a threat, and they have a plan to use their pack,' explained Mbonambi. 'They also have a coach in Gonzalo Quesada who drives that passion. They may have a smaller group of players to choose from compared to South Africa with so few clubs, but they are hard-working players, and we are expecting a tough day at the office. 'We are expecting a massive battle from them, and we know they are going to come hard at us up front for 80 minutes, so we cannot afford to get comfortable at any stage of the match because they have the potential to cause damage.' Heavy favourites The Boks are, however, heavy favourites for the match, having named an experienced and powerful side, and are expected to brush aside the challenge of the Italians, but Mbonambi cautions that they cannot be underestimated. 'Some may be underestimating them, but as a team, we have a lot to lose if we let ourselves down on the field,' said Mbonambi. 'The public will have a different look and feel towards the game, but the planning for us this past week has been based on the perception that Italy are going to come down here with a massive challenge. 'Their backline players are powerful runners, and we're going to have to front up. We're never going to get to a place in the game where we are comfortable and allow them to play their game. 'We are going to have to implement our system, our power and our physicality onto them before they try what they want to do.'
