Status quo likely as rising oil prices play on SBP's mind, say analysts

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is expected to hold the key policy rate at 11% in its upcoming meeting scheduled for Monday, market analysts noted.
'While domestic macroeconomic indicators have improved significantly, particularly inflation and the external account, we believe, the central bank is likely to adopt a wait-and-see approach in light of emerging global risks and domestic policy adjustments,' Arif Habib Limited (AHL) said in its report.
The MPC of the central bank will meet on June 16 to decide on the policy rate, the central bank announced on Thursday. The SBP said it will issue the Monetary Policy Statement through a press release on the same day.
In its last meeting held on May 5, 2025, the MPC cut the policy rate by 100 basis points (bps) to 11%.
This was the lowest policy rate since March 2022 (9.75%). The central bank has cut the rate by 1,100bps since June from an all-time high of 22%.
At the time, the MPC noted that inflation declined sharply during March and April, mainly due to a reduction in administered electricity prices and a continued downtrend in food inflation.
AHL, in its report released on Friday, was of the view that while the domestic landscape supports an easing bias, recent geopolitical developments have raised the stakes.
'Escalating tensions in key oil-producing regions have triggered a sharp surge in global oil prices. Benchmark crude contracts, including Brent, WTI, and Arab Light, have risen close to 10-12% WoW, with daily spikes exceeding 6% as of the latest reading.
'For an oil-importing economy like Pakistan, this poses direct and indirect inflationary risks,' AHL noted.
The brokerage house, citing its estimates, said that for every USD 5/bbl increase in global oil prices (on an annualised basis) adds roughly 23bps to headline inflation directly.
'Additionally, any upward revision in domestic energy tariffs, though necessary to prevent further accumulation of circular debt, would carry inflationary implications. The timing and magnitude of these adjustments, alongside changes in food prices, and potential global trade disruptions, could alter the inflation outlook materially,' it shared.
Topline Securities, another brokerage house, also expects the status quo as international crude oil prices have rebounded to US$68-70/barrel amidst rising tensions in the Middle East region and an expected US-China deal.
'This warrants a cautious approach from policy makers, in our view, as oil prices' movement has remained a major driver of inflation in past.
'Some of the major notifications are also expected before the start of next fiscal year i.e. gas price notification, and electricity price notification, among others,' Topline said in its report.
The brokerage house shared that in its poll, 56% of the market participants expect a status quo in the upcoming monetary policy meeting compared to 31% in the last poll. While 44% are expecting a rate cut of at least 50bps.
Out of the total 44% rate cut participants, 19% are expecting a 50bps cut, and 25% are expecting a 100bps cut, it added.

Thar coal, renewables make Sindh energy basket of Pakistan: CM Murad

KARACHI: With one of the largest indigenous coal reserves in Thar and significant renewable energy potential, Sindh is the energy basket of Pakistan and can lead national progress through its diverse energy sources. Speaking at the Sindh Energy Diversity Conference organized by Energy Update in collaboration with the Government of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Sindh, highlighted that Thar's coal deposits are equivalent to the energy reserves of Saudi Arabia, Iran and Kuwait. Chief Minister Shah shared that the Thar coal project was initially conceived in the 1990s under the leadership of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and was eventually realized through one of the most successful public-private partnerships of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) in Thar Block II. This pioneering initiative disproved the myth that Thar coal, being lower-grade lignite, cannot be used to produce electricity. He added that Thar coal is now generating 1320MW of low-cost electricity in Block-II, powering households and industries across Pakistan. Moreover, an inclusive development approach has been followed, where almost every household in Thar Block-II is now solarized in line with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's vision that the people of Thar must benefit first from this progress. Nasir Hussain Shah, Sindh Minister for Energy and Planning & Development, pointed out that coal gasification plans are underway to expand Thar coal utilization to other key sectors, such as fertilizer and cement, which will reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Higher domestic production of fertilizers will help ensure an abundant and affordable supply of urea for farmers, ensuring greater food security for Pakistan. The Sindh government remains focused on supporting industries and delivering solar home systems to underserved communities, Minister Nasir said. Commending the Government of Sindh for its continued support, Amir Iqbal, CEO of SECMC, said that the Thar Block-II development served as a proof of concept and successfully marked six years of commercial operations on July 10 this year. He noted that 'SECMC supplies coal to three Independent Power Producers (IPPs), energizing over 3 million households and contributing to foreign exchange savings of around US$1.6 billion since inception. These plants consistently rank among the highest on the merit order, reaffirming Thar coal as the most cost-effective baseload fuel.' Amir added that Phase-III mine expansion is underway to make coal even cheaper and add another 660 MW power plant based on Thar coal. He also highlighted SECMC's community investments of providing quality education to over 5000 students with 35% female enrolment, free healthcare access to more than 350,000 patients since inception, and support for the Government of Sindh's solarization efforts covering 3,150 households in Thar Block-II. State Bank injects Rs1.7tr via dual OMOs

Listen to article The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Friday injected a total of Rs1.72 trillion into the banking system through simultaneous conventional and Shariah-compliant open market operations (OMOs), aimed at addressing liquidity needs. Earlier on Wednesday, the government had borrowed Rs1.62 trillion through auctions of securities, with a substantial proportion of Rs1.413 trillion being raised from the Market Treasury Bills (MTBs) and Rs208.42 billion from the 10-year Pakistan Investment Bonds Floating Rate (PFL). The government is compelled to borrow from the private sector amid limits from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on borrowing directly from the central bank. Therefore, the central bank has to go through this cycle of injecting money through OMOs and then borrowing back from the private sector through securities to bridge the fiscal deficit of the government. According to official data, the SBP accepted bids worth Rs1.48 trillion under its conventional reverse repo operation, with a realised value of Rs1.43 trillion. The OMO included injections of Rs154.25 billion for seven-day tenor at a rate of return of 11.09% and Rs1.32 trillion for 14-day tenor at 11.07%, with 24 bids accepted out of 27 received. In parallel, the central bank conducted a Mudarabah-based Shariah-compliant OMO, where it injected an additional Rs243 billion, with a realised value of Rs244.9 billion. The Islamic OMO consisted of Rs40 billion accepted for seven days at a rate of 11.13% and Rs203 billion for 14 days at 11.12%. All three bids received were accepted, reflecting growing market interest in Shariah-compliant instruments. The cumulative injection of liquidity comes at a time when the SBP has been easing monetary conditions, having recently cut the policy rate amid a downward trend in inflation. The strong demand for 14-day funds in both OMOs highlights banks' preference for locking in medium-term liquidity, possibly in anticipation of further monetary easing. Furthermore, the rupee posted a marginal gain against the US dollar on Friday, appreciating by 0.04% in the inter-bank market. By the end of trading, the rupee closed at 284.46, marking an improvement of 10 paisa compared to Thursday's closing rate of 284.56. Meanwhile, gold prices in Pakistan climbed sharply on Friday, tracking gains in the international market, where the yellow metal surged over 1% to a more than two-week high. The rally was driven by renewed safe-haven demand after President Donald Trump reignited trade tensions by announcing fresh tariffs, escalating fears of a global trade war. In the domestic market, the price of gold per tola rose Rs2,300 to settle at Rs357,000, according to data released by the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association. Similarly, the rate for 10 grams of gold increased Rs1,971 to Rs306,069. This follows Thursday's sharp uptick of Rs3,200 per tola, when gold closed at Rs354,700. Globally, spot gold was up 1.2% to $3,363.46 per ounce by 11:32 am EDT (1532 GMT), its highest since June 24. US gold futures gained 1.6% to $3,377.80, according to Reuters. Adnan Agar, Director at Interactive Commodities, explained the international trend, saying: "Gold touched a low of $3,322 and a high of $3,368 today (Friday) and is trading around $3,355. Renewed tariff threats from Trump have triggered another wave of buying in gold." He noted that unless a breakthrough occurs in trade negotiations after August 1, gold is expected to continue trading within a range of $3,270 to $3,420. "If tariffs persist beyond August, we could see further upside. Otherwise, history shows that Trump often backtracks or secures last-minute deals, which could cap gold's rise," Agar added.
