CAF President Dr Motsepe and African Club Association (ACA) Chairman sign historic MoU to strengthen African Club Football
The MoU strengthens the partnership between CAF and ACA and formalizes a number of strategic objectives.
ACA has commended CAF President Dr Motsepe for increasing financial support for Club Football. This includes the USD 50 000 solidary fee given to all Clubs that participated in the preliminary stages of the CAF Interclub competition – marking it the first time Clubs are given financial assistance to participate in the CAF Interclub Competitions.
CAF has also increased the prizemoney in both TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup by over 40%.
ACA was launched in November 2023 with the support of Dr Motsepe and recently announced it would be setting up offices at the world-class King Mohammed VI National Football Academy in Sale, Morocco.
CAF and ACA have mutual aims that are crucial in growing Club Football on the continent, including to protect and develop a large and healthy professional football sector and invest in and promote the training of young talented players in the long-term interest of football.
They also seek to ensure players benefit from suitable education pathways throughout their sporting careers and to promote fair play and to fight against racism, doping, violence, match-fixing and corruption in football.
CAF and ACA will work to ensure National Team and Club Football provides substantial benefits to players, Clubs, Leagues and Member Associations, and foster a closer working relationship.
They have also resolved that sports-related disputes shall be resolved within the appropriate resolution structures; and that strong national championships and international competitions organised by CAF are vital for the on-going and healthy development of football.

Key regulations explained for the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN, PAMOJA 2024
Published: Saturday, 02 August 2025 The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) can confirm the key regulations around the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), PAMOJA 2024 tournament when it comes to group play. The TotalEnergies CAF CHAN, PAMOJA 2024 features 19 teams, and will consist of four groups: three of them (Groups A, B, and C) will include five teams each, while Group D will have four teams. As always, ranking teams in the group stage follows a structured set of criteria. In the event of a tie between two teams: · Priority will first be given to the result of the head-to-head match between them. · Then goal-difference across all group matches is considered. · Followed by the total number of goals scored in all group games. · If teams remain level, Fair Play conduct comes into play, using a point deduction system: o 1 point for a yellow card o 3 points for two yellow cards in a match (red card) o 4 points for a direct red card o 5 points for a yellow card and a direct red card · If all else fails, a drawing of lots conducted by the Organizing Committee will determine the ranking. When more than two teams are tied, the ranking becomes more complex: · Points gained in matches among the tied teams will be considered first, followed by goal difference and goals scored within that subset of matches. · If two teams still cannot be separated after applying these criteria, the rules revert to comparing just those two teams again using the same steps. · If no clear distinction can be made, then overall group performance, through goal difference, goals scored, and fair play points, will be used before a final drawing of lots. At the end of the group phase, the top two teams from each group will progress to the Quarter-finals. 38 years on, CHAN brings Kenya back to the continental football stage
When John Bobby Ogolla stepped out onto the pitch at the 1987 All Africa Games in Nairobi, he led a Kenyan team that made history—reaching the final of a major continental football tournament on home soil. Thirty-eight years later, the former Harambee Stars captain is witnessing another landmark moment as Kenya prepares to co-host the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 alongside Tanzania and Uganda. Ogolla, now a revered football legend and former national team coach, says hosting CHAN is not only a sporting milestone but also a symbol of Kenya's renewed presence on the African football map. 'This is really massive for the country and it reminds me so much of 1987,' Ogolla told "But this is even bigger because there are more countries competing in football and it just shows the respect that CAF and the continent have placed on East Africa.' Ogolla played a central role the last time Kenya staged a major continental event. In 1987, under his captaincy, the Harambee Stars reached the final of the All Africa Games football tournament, narrowly losing to Egypt. That golden generation would go on to qualify for the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations—one of the country's proudest footballing achievements. Now, with Kenya hosting the CHAN finals for the very first time, Ogolla is urging the current crop of players to summon the same grit and belief that powered the class of '87. 'This is their opportunity to replicate what we did close to four decades ago,' he said. 'I believe the team currently in place is quite able to do this. But the biggest secret is in how you start. If they start on a positive note, it will give them some momentum into the rest of the tournament. I remember for us, we started off with a big win against Tunisia and that just gave us huge confidence.' The retired defender and coach, who also served at Kenyan giants Gor Mahia, emphasised the unique opportunity that comes with playing in front of home fans. 'Playing at home comes with huge responsibility and the team has to take it in their stride and represent the country with pride,' Ogolla noted. He also urged fans to embrace the moment and attend matches in large numbers. 'For the fans this is a huge chance to see the stars of tomorrow,' he said. 'We have seen several players who have emerged from this tournament go on and become world stars. It would be a privilege for us to see them as they start. Also, we need to come out and support our own Harambee Stars.' Ogolla believes that just like in 1987, hosting CHAN will leave a lasting impact—both on and off the pitch. 'Hosting this tournament will open up the country to the continent and the world, just like it did when we played at the All Africa Games,' he concluded. 'This is our moment.' The TotalEnergies CAF CHAN PAMOJA 2024 kicks off on Saturday, 2 August 2025, with matches spread across Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and Kampala.
