80+ Dunkin', McDonald's, Subway locations in Mass. fined for child labor violations

Yahoo16-04-2025
The Attorney General's Office issued citations against 88 Dunkin', McDonald's and Subway locations across Massachusetts for violating the state's child labor laws.
The citations, which include a combined total of $226,385 in fines for the fast food employers, were brought against Cafua Management Company LLC, The Brewster Company LLC, and Knight Food Service Inc., according to an announcement Tuesday from Attorney General Joy Campbell.
'Our child labor laws exist to protect young workers and prioritize their safety and education as they learn new skills, earn income, and contribute to their communities,' said AG Campbell.
'My office will continue to enforce these laws to empower our youth and remind employers that Massachusetts is serious about protecting its workforce.'
None of the Dunkin', McDonald's and Subway restaurants across the Bay State had permits for the minors to be employed over the past five years, and all had 16- and 17-year-old employees working past the state's daily nine-hour limit, Campbell said.
The teenagers working at Dunkin' between February 2020 and February 2023 also worked without an adult supervisor after 8 p.m., and the franchise operator did not obtain work permits before hiring the children, Campbell said.
The attorney general's office issued $140,000 in penalties against Cafua, which had Dunkin' locations in over 80 locations across the entire state, including in Greater Boston, the North Shore and the southeastern coast, and Central, Eastern and Western Massachusetts.
The attorney general's office also issued $63,930 in penalties against Brewster for violations of child labor laws at eight McDonald's franchise locations from May 2021 to May 2024. The locations are in Everett, Hanover, Woburn, Weymouth, Quincy, Norwell, Malden and Revere.
As for the teenage Subway workers, Campbell said they were also working past 8 p.m. without an adult supervisor and weren't allowed to have meal breaks after working for over six hours.
The attorney general's office issued $22,455 in penalties against Knight for its violations from February 2023 to August 2024. Knight operates multiple Subway locations across the state, including one in Brockton.
Under Massachusetts child labor law, teens aged 16 and 17 cannot work for more than nine hours a day, six days a week and 48 hours a week. The attorney general office encourages Massachusetts workers who believe their workplace rights are being violated to file a complaint at mass.gov/ago/fld, or call the attorney general's Fair Labor Hotline at 617-727-3465 for more information.

The Snack Wrap is so popular that some McDonald's ran out of lettuce

McDonald's re-introduced Snack Wrap is proving so popular that some restaurants were running out of lettuce. The menu item made its return on July 10, after being cancelled nine years ago. The return of the Snack Wrap is proving to be even more of a big deal than McDonald's was hoping for. The Wall Street Journal reports some locations of the fast-food chain have been running low on lettuce and other toppings since the customer favorite made its return. McDonald's tells Fortune that the shortages were temporary and have been resolved. The Snack Wrap made its return on July 10 after a nine-year absence. (Franchise owners told corporate that the item took workers too long to make, cutting efficiencies. Some stores defied the menu item's cancellation, selling them up until 2020, but by that point, they were completely gone.) While there have been plenty of consumer petitions to bring it back, the company has resisted until this year. On the day the Snack Wrap returned, reports visits to McDonald's locations were 11.4% higher than the usual average on that day of the week. The traffic surges continued for several days. McDonald's might have the OG Snack Wrap, but it's hardly the only restaurant to offer one these days. Wendy's began offering a version of the treat in 2023. The surge in demand for the Snack Wrap brings to mind the 2019 introduction of a chicken sandwich from Popeye's. The chain had what it thought was a two-month supply of chicken sandwich materials on hand when it launched the product. As social media chatter exploded, it exhausted those in just two weeks. After that, Popeyes took the unusual approach of encouraging people to bring their own buns to the stores and create the sandwich themselves, using chicken tenders. McDonald's revamped Snack Wraps are winning over customers

Early data suggests the return of McDonald's Snack Wraps is winning over customers. After a nearly decadelong hiatus, the burger chain brought back the popular menu item earlier this month. So far, it looks like a hit. From July 10 to July 12, the first three days of the launch, McDonald's locations saw traffic jump by double digits each day compared to the year-to-date daily average, according to data. Evercore ISI estimates U.S. same-store sales have climbed 7% so far in the third quarter, according to a research note from Thursday. Some McDonald's U.S. stores even ran out of lettuce, although the company has since resolved the temporary shortage. "After nine years of pent up demand, fans showed up in full force to celebrate the return of the Snack Wrap. We've been blown away by the response, from packed restaurants with lines out the door to nonstop social buzz," McDonald's U.S. said in a statement to CNBC regarding the temporary lettuce shortage. The success of the permanent menu addition is good news for McDonald's, which has struggled with sluggish sales in recent months. In the first quarter, the company reported its largest quarterly U.S. same-store sales decline since 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic shuttered its dining rooms. McDonald's has had some marketing wins: its $5 meal deal and a Minecraft movie tie-in. But discounts can weigh on restaurant profitability, and limited-time promotions only provide a temporary boost to traffic. Most importantly for McDonald's, customers seem to enjoy the Snack Wraps, suggesting that the lift to McDonald's sales could outlast the social media buzz that fueled the initial traffic boost. A Numerator survey of more than 200 verified buyers of the McDonald's Snack Wrap found that 90% of respondents would buy the item again in the future. Those early Snack Wrap buyers are loyal McDonald's customers. Numerator found that the survey's average respondent has visited the chain 56 times so far this year. The typical McDonald's diner has only frequented one of its restaurants 25 times during the same period, according to Numerator. In addition to lettuce, shredded cheese and sauce, McDonald's revived snack wraps are made with one of the chain's McCrispy Strips, which launched nationwide in May. The wraps, which sell for $2.99 each, come in two flavors: spicy and ranch. More than two thirds of Numerator survey respondents bought just the ranch snack wrap, 20% purchased the spicy version, and 12% went for both. The company is expected to report its earnings for the second quarter on Aug. 6. The report will not include the effect of the snack wraps, which rolled out nationwide after the quarter ended.
