Scientists make remarkable discovery after studying common crop soil: 'Opens up new possibilities'

Silicon (Si) is one of Earth's most abundant elements and has been described as only quasi-essential for most land plants, but studies have shown that rice, wheat, and other grasses rely on it to defend against environmental stressors.
A Japanese research team led by Dr. Naoki Yamaji of the Institute of Plant Science and Resources at Okayama University has uncovered a key signaling protein called Shoot-Silicon-Signal (SSS) that works to regulate the intake and distribution of this valuable element, the university wrote in a post on Phys.org.
"Optimization of Si makes more stress-tolerant crops. It contributes to the productivity and sustainability of agriculture," said Yamaji, per the report.
These plants stock up on silicon to bolster their immune system, and its presence fosters healthy growth. Biotic factors like fungal infections and climate-related stressors such as drought, salinity, and extreme heat or cold can be problematic for their growth, and plants rely on Si to improve their defenses.
A 51-82% reduction in crop productivity across the globe in recent years can be attributed to these climate-driven stress factors, and these insights into silicon's role may help fight food insecurity.
As the Phys.org summary explained, SSS is a homolog of florigen, which is a hormone responsible for flowering in plants. While that handles plant development, SSS is hard at work regulating silicon. If the element is abundant in the soil, its levels in the plant drop and the plant adjusts accordingly.
Using the Shoot-Silicon-Signal as a marker, scientists can monitor a plant's requirements and optimize Si fertilization to produce more resilient crops that are better suited to handle environmental stresses.
"This discovery opens up new possibilities for improving Si management in crops, particularly in regions where Si availability in soil is lowered by cultivation," Yamaji further detailed. "By better understanding how plants regulate Si, we can design more efficient fertilization strategies and enhance crop resilience globally."
Similar research has revealed the inner workings of how seedlings regulate growth as they search for sunlight, which could help crops like corn and soybeans grow more efficiently.

Other studies have pinpointed a hormone that could trigger deeper root growth for crops in arid regions that have difficulty thriving.
Rice, wheat, and other similar crops could benefit greatly from this insight into silicon's role in their survival, as those staples serve as the foundation of many diets across the globe. In India, these crops provide around 50% of the population's daily energy requirements.

A new meta review published in the Lancet officially confirmed that we've been calculating our step count number all wrong. The new findings suggest that you can actually reap the major health benefits well before you hit 10,000 steps. Here's what experts say about the 10k number and how this applies to your life. The idea that you need to log 10,000 steps a day for good health has been health gospel for ages. But as Women's Health previously reported this year, the 10,000-a-day steps goal (which roughly equates to five miles) isn't really based in science. In fact, it's more marketing than anything. But it's a nice, round number, and it's built into most fitness trackers. Now, a new scientific analysis in The Lancet Public Health officially confirms that this lofty steps count goal isn't actually necessary—and the potential health benefits start to level off well before you reach that point. If you've been happily clocking 10,000 steps a day and feel like it's working for you, there's no reason to stop. But if that number is intimidating and feels impossible to reach with everything else you've got going on in your life, this study probably has some findings you can use. Here's what the scientific review discovered, plus where experts and trainers recommend you try to land with your new step count goal. Meet the experts: Albert Matheny, RD, CSCS, co-founder of SoHo Strength Lab; Dani Singer, CPT, founder of Fit2Go Personal Training What did the new meta review find? For the review, researchers analyzed data from 88 different studies, looking at how step counts were linked with the risk of developing a slew of health conditions. Overall, the researchers discovered that the risk of developing serious health conditions like cardiovascular disease, dementia, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and depression was lower in people who logged 7,000 steps a day compared to those who only did 2,000 daily steps. But they also discovered that the health perks beyond 7,000 steps were actually pretty minimal. "Although 10,000 steps per day, an unofficial target for decades without a clear evidence base, was associated with substantially lower risks for all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease incidence, cancer mortality, dementia, and depressive symptoms than 7,000 steps per day, the incremental improvement beyond 7,000 steps per day was small, and there was no statistical difference between 7,000 steps per day and a higher step count for all the other outcomes," the investigators wrote. "Therefore, 7,000 steps per day might be a more realistic and achievable recommendation for some, but 10,000 steps per day can still be a viable target for those who are more active.' Where did the 10,000 number come from? The famous steps goal number has a long history behind it (you can do a deep dive here). But here's a quick recap: This number was formulated by a Tokyo doctor named Iwao Ohya who created a fitness tracker called Manpo-Kei (in Japanese, that means "10,000 step meter) with engineer Jiro Kato. It's been suggested that 10,000 steps was chosen because the Japanese character for 10,000 looks like a man running or walking, but it's not really clear if that's truly one of the reasons behind the number. (Both inventors have since died.) The number 10,000 eventually got picked up by researchers and fitness tracker developers, and its popularity spread. These days, almost everyone knows the number. Still, "no clinical data backed it then, and none was added later," says Dani Singer, CPT, founder of Fit2Go Personal Training. Why is it not accurate? While hitting 10,000 steps isn't bad for you (and means you're moving a lot throughout the day) the exact number is pretty much made up. "It was a marketing campaign,' says Albert Matheny, RD, CSCS, co-founder of SoHo Strength Lab. 'There wasn't a scientific basis for it.' Matheny stresses that the 10,000 steps a day goal isn't necessarily inaccurate from a health POV—but many people can get serious health perks between 5,000 to 7,000 steps a day. "The data show health gains level off well before 10,000," Singer says. "Mortality and cardiovascular risk improvements start at just 2,000. It's important to understand this so that you avoid an all-or-nothing mindset—especially one that isn't based on any actual data." If that's the number you like, and you hit it consistently, stick with it! But just remember: '10,000 steps per day is not the magic number," per Matheny. So, how many steps should I take per day? Based on the scientific review's findings, aiming for 5,000 to 7,000 steps a day is a good goal to reach for. That's roughly two to 3.5 miles per day, depending on your stride. 'There's nothing wrong with 10,000 steps, but it isn't based in science,' Matheny says. If you want to still aim for 10,000 steps, Matheny says you should go for it. 'If you don't get there, maybe you still get to 7,000,' he points out. But any amount of walking is helpful. 'A thousand steps is way better than zero,' Matheny says. Okra for Glucose Control: Ancient Practice or Pseudoscience?

A member of the mallow family, cousin to hibiscus, cotton, and cocoa, okra is one of the world's oldest cultivated crops, with origins in Africa — specifically around Ethiopia and Eritrea — dating back over 1000 years. Its use as both a food and a medicinal plant developed alongside its cultivation, but it took the arrival of the Internet for it to become a viral sensation for supposedly managing blood glucose levels. Okra, and specifically okra water, has gone through periods of popularity, but it's currently hotter than ever: Pinterest alone reported a 470% spike in searches for the term from June 2023 to June 2024. With its popularity at an all-time high, it's important to know the science behind the consumption of this viral veggie. Is eating okra or drinking okra water actually helpful when it comes to controlling glucose? Most importantly, is it safe for people with diabetes or for anyone seeking to improve their overall health? The Data on Okra The nutritional benefits of all of okra's various components — its leaves, pods, seeds, and mucilage — have been studied, although not widely. One of the first research efforts to identify the potential efficacy of okra in glucose control was a 1989 Japanese study. It showed that the mucilage of the vegetable has a significant hypoglycemic effect due to its backbone chain that consists mainly of L-rhamno-D-galacturonan. In 2018, further research was performed in which the water extract of the okra was prepared in order to isolate the leading polysaccharide fraction, which was again found to be rhamnogalacturonan. In this study, the rhamnogalacturonan was found to decrease blood glucose levels and glucose tolerance. A 2023 meta-analysis of studies from Medline and Scopus came to the conclusion that ' okra treatment in prediabetic and T2D [type 2 diabetes] patients has beneficial effects on glycemic control, as demonstrated by a significant reduction in the level of FBG [fasting blood glucose].' It's important to note that after a detailed literature search, various issues disqualified all but eight studies in this meta-analysis. In addition to its benefits for blood glucose, okra is high in vitamins, especially vitamin K: One cup of okra provides almost 70% of the daily recommended target for this important nutrient, which is critical for blood clotting and bone health. Okra also delivers high quantities of magnesium, folate, potassium, and calcium. As far as the science goes, it would seem that okra measures up to the hype. Doctors are skeptical, though. Ali Chappell, PhD, MS, RD 'There's very little clinical evidence that okra water has any meaningful impact on blood sugar levels,' said Ali Chappell, PhD, MS, RD, and CEO of Lilli Health, Houston, which specializes in low-insulin lifestyle design. 'That being said, it is high in soluble fiber, which can help you feel more full, leading to less overeating and, in turn, could support better blood sugar control.' Michael Aziz, MD, an attending physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, is even more strident in his cynicism regarding the efficacy of the potion. Okra is a vegetable. But using okra as the basis for a health drink? Michael Aziz, MD 'The users claim that chopping up okra, soaking it in water, and refrigerating it overnight before drinking it every morning boasts all sorts of benefits, from helping with pregnancy and diabetes to increasing sex drive and boosting gut health,' he said. Aziz said the main benefit he can see from the okra water delivery actually comes from drinking more water. He acknowledged that there may be some effect on glucose levels. 'The drinkers report feeling more energized and having a lower blood pressure. It appears okra water can drop sugar levels. There are no scientific studies to back up these claims,' he said. 'Any benefits from drinking okra water will be from staying hydrated.' Why Okra Water? Okra can be a bit of an acquired taste. While eating the whole pod provides more nutritional benefits, the mucilage, or 'slime,' that contains its beneficial compounds can be a turnoff when the vegetable is stewed or boiled. Of course, there are other ways to cook okra that don't leave it with a slimy finish, like deep-frying — not the healthiest way to eat anything — or roasting. When it comes to the use of okra for health benefits, it seems that okra water has become popular because it's a quick and easy way to get the desired nutritional compounds without actually eating a bunch of vegetables. Okra is a vascular vegetable with a high-water concentration, and the compounds shown to be effective in glycemic control come from its mucilage. Okra water is made by slicing the okra pods in half lengthwise in order to expose the most surface area, then soaking them in water overnight. The water is then strained, and the okra is discarded. The water will be a bit thick from the mucilage, but that's where the nutrients are. Who Should Steer Clear of Okra Water Okra water is generally innocuous, but doctors say that anyone with gastrointestinal conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) should use caution when drinking okra water. Okra contains fructans, which are a type of fermentable oligosaccharide, disaccharide, monosaccharide, and polyol. These are short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine. For individuals with IBS or IBD, these undigested carbohydrates can ferment in the colon, leading to unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects. Additionally, even though the okra itself is discarded when making okra water, the water still gains a relatively high fiber content from the mucilage. While fiber is generally good for gut health, the type and amount of fiber can be problematic for people with IBD, particularly during a flare-up. Okra contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. While soluble fiber, like the mucilage, can be soothing and help regulate bowel movements, a sudden increase in fiber consumption or a large amount of any fiber can sometimes exacerbate symptoms like cramping and diarrhea during an IBD flare. During active inflammation, the gut lining is highly sensitive, and even beneficial fibers can be irritating or contribute to discomfort. Even though okra is in the mallow family, it's often discussed in the same context as nightshade vegetables because it contains compounds that some individuals with inflammatory conditions, including IBD, say exacerbate their symptoms. While the science regarding this connection is not fully conclusive, anecdotal evidence from patients with IBD suggests that some find relief by avoiding such foods. Lenox Hill's Aziz added some additional cautions. 'Okra water can cause bloating, as it has slimy mucilage if drunk in excess,' he said. 'It is also high in oxalates, which can lead to the formation of kidney stones.' As for its ability to control glucose, he said it can cause hypoglycemia, leading to a need for careful monitoring of blood sugar, especially when being used by people with diabetes. As with any other food, it is possible to have an allergy to okra. It's also possible to have a contact reaction to okra, though both this type of allergy and the food allergy are rare. Make This at Home To give okra water a try, take 4-6 fresh okra pods that are free from blemishes, and wash them under the tap to clean them off. Slice them in half lengthwise and put them into a jar with 1-2 cups of water — filtered or distilled is recommended. Use more water for a less viscous beverage and less water for a thicker beverage. Put the lid on the jar and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, strain the liquid through a colander or through cheesecloth into a glass. Squeeze the pods to get more of the mucilage out if so desired. Add a lemon or some mint for extra flavor. 'Adding a flavor to the water, whether it is lime or cucumber, will add a twist and more likely make you drink more water and stay hydrated,' Aziz said. Viral videos may recommend that the okra water be consumed first thing in the morning, but there is no evidence that the time of day makes any difference in whatever benefits may be derived from the okra water — or not.

Walking 7,000 steps a day is the sweet spot for preventing many chronic diseases that can lead to an early death, a major study has shown. While the goal of 10,000 daily steps has become firmly established in the public consciousness, an international team of researchers found even a modest amount of walking brings major benefits. British scientists said it finally 'debunked the myth' of 10,000 steps and should encourage people to try and hit the lower target. The major review of 57 studies involving 160,000 adults, which was published in The Lancet, concluded that for most conditions health benefits tended to level off beyond 7,000 steps. Hitting 7,000 steps a day was found to reduce all-cause-mortality by 47 per cent, cardiovascular disease by 25 per cent, cancer by six per cent, diabetes by 14 per cent, dementia by 38 per cent and depression by 22 per cent. Health benefits were also apparent from 4,000 steps when compared to 'inactive' people who walked just 2,000, the study led by the University of Sydney found. Every extra 1,000 steps brought better outcomes, researchers found. Commenting on the study, Steven Harridge, professor of human and applied physiology at King's College London, said: 'Humans are designed to be physically active – our evolutionary heritage as hunter gatherers. 'There has been debate about the amount of activity an individual should be doing with 10,000 steps as a generalised target, not well evidenced. 'This paper shows that 7,000 steps is sufficient for reducing the risk for most diseases covered, and 10, 000 steps does not confer much additional benefit.' According to World Health Organisation data, insufficient physical activity is the fourth most frequent cause of death in the world, with 3.2 million deaths a year related to physical inactivity. Many health organisations recommend hitting 10,000 steps a day, although there is little evidence for the target, which is believed to have arisen from a Japanese marketing campaign in the 1960s. In the run-up to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the company Yamasa sought to capitalise on the sudden interest in fitness, so designed the world's first wearable step-counter. They called it the Manpo-kei, or '10,000-step meter'. The company appears to have chosen the figure at random, as a fun goal, but it has stuck ever since. The new paper found that for heart disease, walking more than 7,000 steps was beneficial, but for most conditions there was little gain from putting in more said it was still unclear why walking brings such striking benefits but said it is likely to increase cardiorespiratory fitness, which is known to be positively associated with better health and all-cause mortality outcomes. Commenting on the research, Dr Daniel Bailey, an expert in sedentary behaviour and health at Brunel University of London, said the 7,000 steps target was more achievable for many people than 10,000 steps. 'Just adding more steps from your starting point can have important benefits for health,' he said. 'This study adds to existing evidence by showing that the more steps people do, the less their risk of developing different health conditions. 'The finding that doing 5,000-7,000 steps per day is beneficial, is an important addition to the literature which helps to debunk the myth that 10,000 steps per day should be the target for optimal health.' The Alzheimer's Society also welcomed the study saying it demonstrated that inactivity is a major risk factor for dementia. Dr Richard Oakley, associate director of research and innovation at the charity said: 'It adds to the evidence that what's good for the heart is good for the head.'
