'Tell Him It's Over': How Madhuri Dixit Allegedly Ended Things With Sanjay Dutt After His 1993 Arrest

Sanjay Dutt allegedly told Madhuri Dixit 'I love you' during their 90s romance, but their bond faded after his arrest and split from wife Richa Sharma.
Madhuri Dixit, often revered as the 'queen of Bollywood," has captivated generations with her acting brilliance, radiant presence, and iconic dance numbers. Rising to stardom in the late 1980s, she carved out a place for herself in an industry largely dominated by men. With blockbusters like Tezaab, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, and Dil To Pagal Hai, Madhuri didn't just hold her own—she led the charge.
Yet beyond her cinematic achievements, it was her rumored relationship with Bollywood's 'bad boy" Sanjay Dutt that became the stuff of gossip column legend. Their alleged romance—set against a backdrop of hit films, public speculation, and personal turbulence—remains one of the most whispered-about chapters in Bollywood history.
The two first shared the screen in films like Khatron Ke Khiladi, Thanedaar, Saajan, Khalnayak, and Ilaaka. Their on-screen chemistry was magnetic. But it wasn't just the cameras catching sparks. Industry insiders at the time noted an undeniable closeness between the stars off-camera—an emotional intimacy that felt like more than just professional camaraderie.
While Madhuri never publicly confirmed the relationship, the rumors swirled intensely throughout the early 1990s. Sanjay Dutt, meanwhile, was married to actress Richa Sharma, who was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor in the United States. During her absence, it was believed that Sanjay and Madhuri grew increasingly close—a connection that turned complicated when Richa returned to India.
According to reports, Richa was devastated by the state of her marriage upon her return. While she tried to rebuild their relationship, the emotional distance between her and Sanjay only deepened. At the same time, Madhuri reportedly began pulling away from the actor, especially as his legal troubles loomed.
Everything changed in 1993 when Sanjay Dutt was arrested under the TADA Act for illegal possession of arms in connection with the Mumbai bomb blasts. His sudden fall from grace shocked the nation—and allegedly marked the end of his equation with Madhuri.
According to a report in Stardust magazine at the time, Madhuri decisively cut ties. The article claimed she had conveyed through Sanjay's sister: 'Please tell Sanju not to call me up ever. Tell him that it's all over." Whether or not those words were truly hers, the message was clear—Madhuri had chosen distance, prioritizing her reputation and professional future.
Richa Sharma, before her tragic death in 1996, spoke briefly about the pain Sanjay endured after Madhuri exited his life. She described him as someone emotionally fragile, saying he often leaned heavily on others for support. Losing Madhuri, she believed, left him emotionally adrift.
Through the years, Sanjay Dutt has occasionally hinted at the affection he once held for her. In a 2017 event, when asked which actress he would marry if given the chance, he answered candidly: 'I would like to marry Madhuri Dixit." His remark stirred fresh conversation, but Madhuri remained publicly silent, as she had for decades.
Despite endless speculation, Madhuri has consistently maintained her dignity and distance. While tabloids continued to revisit their story, she chose to focus on her career, marriage, and motherhood—never allowing a media narrative to define her legacy.
Today, Madhuri Dixit stands not only as one of Indian cinema's most enduring stars, but also as a woman who moved forward with grace—leaving behind a rumored romance that, though never confirmed, continues to live on in Bollywood's collective memory.

‘Nobody cared about Madhuri Dixit; her parents told her to quit films and get married to a singer, but even he rejected her': Raza Murad

Madhuri Dixit was one of the biggest stars of the 1990s, but her early slate of films didn't get much attention. In fact, they flopped so terribly that her parents even considered getting her married. Madhuri wouldn't have been the star that she became had the person her parents approached to marry her said yes. But he rejected the offer, and Madhuri was eventually spotted by director Subhash Ghai in a chance encounter. He re-launched her with the film Ram Lakhan, a year after she gained appreciation for her role in Tezaab. This was the late 1980s. In an interview, veteran actor Raza Murad spoke about the importance of luck in a performer's life. He cited the example of Amitabh Bachchan, who also had a string of flops behind him before he broke out with the film Zanjeer in the early 1970s. He then spoke about Madhuri. 'She was doing insignificant films like Abodh and Awara Baap. Nobody cared for her, nobody noticed her. Her parents decided to get her married, because her career was at rock bottom. They approached a playback singer, and arranged a meeting between them. He looked at her and said, 'She's too thin'.' Also read – Madhuri Dixit was known as the 'jinxed actor', says director Indra Kumar: 'No one wanted her, bechaari ka flop impression tha' Murad continued, 'Some time later, she was filming in Kashmir with Rajesh Khanna. Close by, Subhash Ghai was also at work. Her hairdresser went to meet him, and he asked what film she was working on. She introduced him to Madhuri, and he was immediately struck by her appearance. He asked her to meet him in Mumbai, and re-launched her because he had a good sense. Otherwise, it was basically pack-up time for her.' Appearing on the singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in 2023, singer Suresh Wadkar seemed to admit that he was the person who rejected an offer to marry Madhuri. When host Aditya Narayan asked him about a certain rumour around a very popular actor's parents approaching him with an offer to marry her, he blushed and looked at his wife, who was sitting next to him. He said that he is very content in life, and very glad that he found a 'madhuri named Padma'. This seemed to be confirmation enough for the panel of judges, including Anu Malik and Himesh Reshammiya, who expressed shock. Madhuri married US-based cardiovascular surgeon Sriram Nene in 1999, and quit the films for a few years when she moved to Denver to raise a family. She returned in the mid-2000s with Dr Nene and their two sons, who are now studying in college. Madhuri herself is a prominent fixture on singing reality shows, and Suresh Wadkar admitted that he might get told off one day for what he said on national TV.

Sanjay Dutt: My circle of friends has become smaller now

Sanjay Dutt Sanjay Dutt has always cherished spending time with friends. However, over the years, the actor admits that his circle of friends has gradually become smaller. Now dividing his time between Mumbai and Dubai, Dutt finds himself in Mumbai mostly for work, while Dubai remains his haven for family life. Whenever he returns to Mumbai, he makes it a point to reconnect with those closest to him. Once known for hosting lavish gatherings at his Mumbai home, Dutt now prefers a quieter lifestyle. Speaking candidly, he shares, 'My circle has become smaller over time. I really enjoy having meaningful conversations with my close friends. These are old friends, nothing related to the film industry or business. They drop by occasionally—we laugh, talk, have a drink. It's simple and genuine.' The K.G.F: Chapter 2 actor made these remarks while attending a celebration in Mumbai, marking two years of GlenWalk, a beverage brand he endorses. Dutt has been the face of GlenWalk, founded by his long-time friend Mokksh Sani. The two have shared a bond for over two decades. Reflecting on their collaboration, Mokksh Sani—also the founder of The Living Liquidz—said, 'The response has been fantastic, and we're continuing to grow. I focus on manufacturing, but I always turn to Sanjay for marketing insights. He's the face of our brand, yet he gives us full creative freedom, which is invaluable. More than that, I've always been a huge fan of his. I often send him videos whenever I'm watching his films like Vaastav or Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. '
