POLOKWANE – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially announced that the 2025 Tax Filing Season will run from 7 July to 20 October 2025 for most individual taxpayers.
This year's filing season will once again feature Auto Assessments (a streamlined process for taxpayers with straightforward tax affairs).
Those eligible will be notified by SMS or email between July 7 and 20. If satisfied with their assessment, they do not need to take further action.
For taxpayers who do not receive an Auto Assessment or who need to update or correct information, SARS will open filing via eFiling, the MobiApp, or branches from July 21.
The deadline for non-provisional taxpayers is October 20, while provisional taxpayers have until January 19, 2026, and trusts may file from September 20 to January 19.
SARS urges all taxpayers to update their banking and security contact details in advance to avoid delays in receiving refunds, which will be paid within 72 business hours of a completed and accurate return.
To make filing easier this year, SARS has enhanced its digital platforms, expanded service hours, and strengthened online support tools, including a WhatsApp line, virtual assistant, and interactive how-to videos.
Taxpayers are reminded to comply with deadlines and filing rules to avoid penalties. For help, visit www.sars.gov.za.

Roodepoort frail care centre announces closure
Kruinpark Frail Care Centre, situated at the Kruinpark Retirement Village in Umgeni Road, has announced that it will close its doors at the end of July. This comes after protracted legal battles with the centre's landlords over outstanding rent, and repairs and maintenance at the facility, which at one point serviced more than 70 full-time patients. Also read: Kruinpark Retirement Village holds fundraising market According to frail care co-owner Cornelia Germishuizen, the dispute arose out of the landlord's refusal to sign a lease agreement in the name of the holding company, Virlomax, which bought over the business from another company in 2019. 'The other company had a significant amount outstanding, and the landlords refused to entertain another lease until all outstanding amounts were paid up.' Germishuizen adds that this was partly because the owner of the previous company also happened to be a shareholder in Virlomax at the time. Rumours recently started spreading on social media platforms that residents and their families were told, with just a few weeks' notice, that they should vacate by July 1. 'This is simply not true,' says Germishuizen. 'We've been very open and honest from the outset with our residents and their families. They were fully aware that there were legal disputes going on, and what those disputes were. 'We tried everything we could to convince the landlord to give us a lease agreement, but they simply would not budge. 'We even offered to give up the business to another operator, so that our residents would not be affected, but they also rejected this. 'The ever-escalating costs of the ongoing legal disputes and the exorbitant rent left us with no choice but to vacate the premises,' says Germishuizen, who adds that even if they could somehow settle the legal disputes, the rent (currently at R305 000 per month) makes it impossible to run a profitable business. Virlomax confirmed their closure in a letter addressed to residents and their families on June 20, but Germishuizen stresses that, though the letter was only officially sent on this date, they had communicated with patients long before this. 'We have already managed to place all our patients in different centres at the same cost,' she says. 'I drove to each centre and negotiated with the owners. We also have an arrangement in place with an ambulance service to transport the patients to the new centres at our cost.' Sars makes changes to eFiling for easy use
The Express functionality will enable taxpayers to easily view, update, and manage their tax affairs. The South African Revenue Services (Sars) has added an option on the eFiling platform ahead of the 2025 tax season to make it easier for taxpayers to process their auto assessments. Tax season 2025 is set to run from 7 July to 20 October. The new option, 'Express Functionality', will be available to taxpayers who are auto-assessed by the taxman. The Express functionality will enable taxpayers to easily view, update, and manage their tax affairs. How new option work on eFiling 'The most frequently used functions for Personal Income Tax are now more directly accessible on the eFiling landing page,' says the taxman Taxpayers will notice the 'Express' tabs at the top left of the eFiling profile home page. These tabs are expected to offer taxpayers the functions that will enable them to submit previous years' returns, view or edit tax returns, and update personal or banking details. The Citizen attempted to run a trial run of the new function, but it appears it has not been included in the user's profile. The reason could be that the user is not auto-assessed, or the taxman will add it on the platform closer to the beginning of the tax season. ALSO READ: Sars records increase in taxpayers who filed returns Auto assessment The system selects taxpayers that it will auto-assess based on the information received from third parties. These include employers, medical schemes, banks, and retirement funds. 'We then use such data to populate your income tax return and calculate your income tax assessment. If we are satisfied that the data and tax calculation are correct, we issue the assessment to you through eFiling or the SARS MobiApp. 'At the same time, we also send you a message to your preferred channel of communication (such as SMS or email) to let you know that your assessment on eFiling or the SARS MobiApp is ready for you to review,' said Sars. Refunds The taxman said refunds of R100 or more will be paid automatically within 72 hours. Refunds of less than R100 will be added to your account and paid out when your account balance exceeds R100. You can check your refund status on WhatsApp (0800 11 7277), Sars MobiApp, or by dialling *134*7277#. 'Debt of R100 or more must be paid by the due date. If the Debt is less than R100 you can choose whether to pay it now or let it be carried over to the next tax year. Remember, interest is payable on any debt, whether less than R100, or R100 or more.' Those who are auto-assessed by the taxman will receive a notification from Sars between 7 and 20 July. Taxpayers who did not receive a notification during that period are encouraged to submit their tax returns with accurate information from 21 July till 20 October.
