Proposed EPF policy undermines contributors' right to their retirement funds, says SUPP man
KUCHING (Aug 3): The Batu Kitang branch of Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) has voiced opposition to the proposed move to restrict Employees Provident Fund (EPF) lump sum withdrawals, stating that such a policy would deprive contributors of rightful access to their own savings.
In a statement issued yesterday, the branch's publicity secretary Fang Toung Shyuan acknowledged the government's intent of preventing retirees from misusing their EPF savings and potentially falling into financial hardships.
However, he also stressed about the retirement funds rightfully belonging to the contributors.
'EPF savings are the result of a member's lifelong hard work.
'Once they reach retirement age, the funds belong to them, not the EPF.
'Imposing mandatory restrictions on how these savings can be accessed is unjustified,' he said in the statement.
Fang called upon the government to respect the voices and feedback of EPF contributors, whose funds had been accumulated over many years of employment.
He argued that retirees should not be subjected to a rigid, one-size-fits-all policy, especially when many already had personal retirement plans in place.
'At the very least, members must be free to choose their preferred method of withdrawal,' he said.
Fang also expressed concern over recent declines in EPF investment returns, which he warned could lead to public suspicion that the proposed policy served as a means for the government to shift financial risk to the people.
He noted that some contributors planned to use their EPF savings to start small businesses, invest, support their children's ventures, or to make home purchases.
Furthermore, he cited EPF's data reporting that around 50 per cent of members had less than RM10,000 in their accounts at retirement funds.
'If a monthly disbursement system is enforced, it could mean receiving only a few hundred ringgit per month, which may last just two to three years.'
In this regard, Fang called upon the government to drop the proposed policy, warning that it could cause unnecessary concern and inconvenience to EPF members. epf Fang Toung Shyuan lead lump sum withdrawals SUPP

Ringgit ends higher against US dollar on Fed rate cut hopes
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit continued to close higher against the US dollar as expectations of an interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) gained momentum, said an analyst. At 6 pm, the local note climbed to 4.2260/2310 against the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2350/2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that risky assets such as equities have been rising as a lower interest environment would be positive for corporate finances, especially on their cost of borrowings. Commenting on the US Fed, the economist noted that a series of Fed speakers are expected to shed more light on the future direction of US interest rates. He noted that several Fed officials, San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly, Boston Fed President Susan Collins, and Fed Governor Lisa Cook, will be speaking to the public on Thursday. "Our sense is that the market would want to hear the latest conviction among the Fed as to how the interest rate would evolve in the months to come, especially in the September Federal Open Market Committee meeting," he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit ended firmer against major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8618/8654 from 2.8652/8677 at the close on Monday, gained versus the British pound to 5.6159/6226 from 5.6296/6342, and was higher against the euro to 4.8772/8830 from 4.8978/9018 previously. The ringgit was also strengthened against regional peers. It improved against the Singapore dollar to 3.2793/2834 from 3.2878/2908, inched up versus the Thai baht to 13.0408/0627 from 13.0452/0616, strengthened against the Indonesian rupiah to 257.8/258.2 from 258.2/258.5 and improved against the Philippine peso to 7.33/7.34 from 7.38/7.39 previously. - Bernama

Proposals on unexplained wealth, monthly pensions to be studied, says Amir Hamzah
Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. KUALA LUMPUR: The government is not yet ready to implement the Unexplained Wealth Order (UWO), despite having received proposals for its introduction, says Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. The Finance Minister II said the government would first study related issues before any implementation. "We will look at good ideas before execution, and I have received suggestions to explore. We will study the matter first and understand the issues involved because we do not want unintended consequences,' he said. He told reporters this after officiating the 2025 National Tax Conference here on Tuesday (Aug 5). Previously, former Klang MP Charles Santiago was reported as saying that Malaysia needed the UWO to hold all elites accountable for the source of their wealth. Meanwhile, Amir Hamzah said the government would also examine efforts to introduce monthly pension payments as part of the initiative to improve the national remuneration system. He said a thorough study must be carried out to refine more practical implementation methods. "The issue we see now is that when someone gains full access (to their retirement funds), many tend to spend the money quickly. So, when they reach old age, they don't have sufficient savings. "I believe in the study, we will look at various more practical implementation methods. As previously explained, this initiative is for those newly entering the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) scheme, not for those already in the system,' he said. According to the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) document issued by the Economy Ministry on July 31, the government will explore a new mechanism to ensure continuous post-retirement income by splitting EPF contributions into two main components, namely retirement savings and monthly pensions.- Bernama
