Man arrested after elderly couple killed in fire
Peter Eric Greener, 77, known as Eric, died on July 16 and his partner Sheila Jackson, 83, died on July 17 following the fire at their home on South John Street in the early hours of Tuesday.
Merseyside Police said an accelerant was used to start the blaze.
The man from St Helens was arrested in the early hours of Sunday on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson, senior investigating officer, said: 'Although an arrest has been made, I would like to take this opportunity to remind people to pass on information directly to police or anonymously via Crimestoppers, and not to comment or post in any way which jeopardises this ongoing work.
'Extensive inquiries continue, and to that end we are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward, particularly if you live in the area of South John Street and recall seeing or hearing anything suspicious at around the time of the incident. Please do not assume what you know has already been reported to us, as we can quickly make that assessment.'
On Friday, pictures of the couple, including one showing Mr Greener with his arm around Ms Jackson, were released by their families through police.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve McGrath said last week it was 'sickening' and 'a truly shocking incident' and everyone in Merseyside would be 'utterly appalled' at what had happened.

"Lifeboats from Port William Inshore Rescue Service and Kirkudbright RNLI were also sent. "Police Scotland are also in attendance. The situation is ongoing." Officers have surrounded a home in Kinning Park, Glasgow, after the alarm was raised earlier today. A neighbour who spoke to police revealed he's been asked by police about a report of a firearm at the scene. He said: 'The police came to my door and said they had received a call from someone saying there was a gun in the house. 'I was shocked but I have no idea what it's all about. 'I don't know the people who stay there as I think it's an Air BnB and the people change all the time. 'There are a lot of police about and they are going round the doors and seem to be taking it very seriously.' Around half a dozen police motors are in the area with cops also searching inside the home in the quiet street. Another neighbour added: 'The police came about 1pm and made straight for the house that's being searched. 'I thought it looked like a drugs raid or maybe they were making an arrest but nobody seems to be inside the house. Drug dealer caught out by picture of own driveway
A prolific drug-dealer was caught out after sending pictures of his own driveway in Liverpool over the supposedly secure Encrochat messaging Caldwell also used his own child's name and sent pictures of his home CCTV system to fellow criminals on the network, which was hacked by French police in 37, was identified as the Encrochat user behind the handle 'box-bat' - which played a "leading role" in the supply of 16kg (35 lbs) of cocaine, 2kg (4 lbs) of heroin and 14kg (30 lbs) of cannabis between March and June 2020. He was jailed for 12 years at Liverpool Crown Court after admitting two counts of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and one to supply Class B drugs. The court heard earlier that Caldwell, of Lynnbank Road in Calderstones, had also discussed the trade of his licensed taxi cars in chats with other Encrochat users. Det Insp James Boardman, of Merseyside Police, said: "Caldwell is just the latest person to be brought to justice for their involvement in the widescale peddling of drugs on the streets of Merseyside."In June the force announced that five years on from the Encrochat hack, 180 people had been sentenced to a total of 2,261 years in prison in Merseyside. Detectives in the region said they are still working their way through hundreds of files relating to other Encrochat handles.
