NEW DELHI: The
Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) on Monday filed a chargesheet with the Lokpal in connection with the alleged 'cash-for-query' scam involving
Trinamool Congress
(TMC) leader
Mahua Moitra
.
In response to directives from the anti-corruption ombudsman, the CBI in March last year filed an FIR against Mahua Moitra.
The Lokpal had issued instructions to the CBI after reviewing the findings of the agency's preliminary inquiry into allegations raised by BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey against Mahua.
The Lokpal had directed the CBI to investigate comprehensively all facets of the complaints against her within six months.
Dubey has accused Mahua of soliciting cash and gifts from Dubai-based businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for raising questions in the Lok Sabha to criticise industrialist
Gautam Adani
and
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
, among others.
Mahua has vehemently denied these allegations.
The Lokpal, however, after careful consideration, deemed the allegations against Mahua as grave and supported by substantial evidence.
It emphasised the need for a thorough investigation, considering Mahua's former position and status.
The Lokpal bench, comprising Justice Abhilasha Kumari and members Archana Ramasundaram and Mahender Singh, stressed the importance of probity in public office and the detrimental effects of corruption on democratic functioning.
Consequently, the Lokpal directed the CBI to conduct a comprehensive investigation into all allegations and submit a report within six months.
The filing of the chargesheet against Mahua marks a significant development in the ongoing controversy surrounding the TMC MP.

Former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma criticises NPP govt over its failure

Shillong, July 31 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly, Dr. Mukul M. Sangma, today said that the opposition parties - Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Voice of the People Party (VPP) - will expose all the irregularities of the National People's Party (NPP)-led government. 'We (TMC and VPP) will take on the State government and expose their self-centric agendas and their anti-people programmes,' the former Chief Minister said. Sangma's statement comes a day after lone Congress legislator and Opposition Chief Whip, Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, joined the NPP, leaving the grand-old party with no representation in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly. Sangma voiced confidence that TMC and VPP are capable enough to deal with the ruling dispensation. 'They (government) may be attempting to stifle the voice of the opposition, but that is their wishful thinking. Opposition is opposition whatever the number are there in the opposition bench,' the senior-most legislator in the assembly asserted. The former Chief Minister cautioned the Conrad Sangma-led government that it cannot continue with the impunity and that the opposition parties will ensure that the government is held accountable for its irregularities. Pointing out that various kind of unfortunate things unfolding in different parts of the state, including the disappearance of 4,000 metric tonnes of coal from two designated depots, the TMC leader said, 'It is up to the people of the State to visualise the intent and priority of this government.' Hitting out at the NPP-led government for its failure to address the pressing issue of illegal influx into the state, Sangma said that the government's actions regarding the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) and the long-standing demand for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) were 'nothing more than political rhetoric'. 'The government has failed to come up with an effective and transparent mechanism to check illegal influx. They are simply misguiding the people on MRSSA and ILP,' Sangma alleged. Claiming that the rights and identity of Meghalaya's indigenous population were being compromised, the TMC legislator urged the government to move beyond statements and take meaningful, constitutionally sound actions. Cambodia conmen using SIM boxes in India to trick cops, find Telangana police and DoPT after raid in Mancherial

Hyderabad: Cambodia-based cybercrime syndicates have adopted a new tactic to evade Indian authorities — using SIM boxes installed in India to make VoIP calls and carry out 'digital arrest' scams. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The racket surfaced after the Department of Telecom (DoPT), along with Telangana police, raided a building in Jannaram, Mancherial district, and arrested four men — Y Kamesh (from Manyam district, AP), B Bapaiah, B Madhukar (both from Jagtial), and G Rajeshwar (Kistapur village). The main accused, Jack alias P Sai Krishna, is absconding. Police said Bapaiah had worked at a hotel in Cambodia, where he befriended Jack and was later roped into the scam. Delhi police also visited Mancherial in connection with a separate cybercrime case registered in the national capital. 'The DoT-Hyderabad unit received a complaint via the Chakshu portal about impersonation calls from people posing as government officials threatening mobile disconnection,' said Mancherial DCP A Bhaskar. When DoPT authorities analysed the technical details, by tracing IMEI numbers and the SIM boxes, it led them to Jannaram. On reaching the spot, police found SIM boxes in a single room of the building. One SIM box had 230 SIMs. Cops tracked down the people who had taken the premises on rent and created the set-up. 'In just two hours, call activity totalled 50,000 seconds. This means that 40 to 50 people were simultaneously making calls to prospective cybercrime victims in India,'' said Alen Anurag, additional director general, DoPT. The SIM cards were fraudulently sourced from Vizianagaram in AP, he added. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On interrogation, the four accused revealed they were working for Cambodia-based cybercrime rings. 'Jack had tasked Bapaiah with setting up SIM box infrastructure to enable VoIP calls from Cambodia. Kamesh, a victim of online betting, joined in to recoup his losses. They were promised salaries of Rs 30,000–70,000, along with a share in the fraud proceeds,' a police official said.
