Indias vegetable oil imports flat in June despite tariff cut boost to crude oils
The rise in crude oil shipments came after the government reduced the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on crude edible oils, including crude palm oil, crude soybean oil, and crude sunflower oil, to 10 per cent from 20 per cent, effective May 31.
Total vegetable oils, comprising both edible and non-edible oils, stood at 15.50 lakh tonnes in June 2024.
In the edible oil category, barring crude sunflower oils, imports of other crude edible oil variants rose 25.64 per cent to 11.51 lakh tonnes in June from 9.16 lakh tonnes a year earlier.
However, crude sunflower oil shipments declined 53.58 per cent to 2.61 lakh tonnes in June from the year-ago period.
According to SEA data, crude palm oil (CPO) imports rose 23.55 per cent to 7.88 lakh tonnes in June from 6.37 lakh tonnes a year earlier, while crude soybean oil imports increased 30.39 per cent to 3.59 lakh tonnes from 2.75 lakh tonnes.
Crude Palm Kernel Oil (CPKO) imports rose 33.33 per cent to 4,000 tonnes in June from 3,000 tonnes in the year-ago period.
Total imports of crude edible oils (CPO, CPKO, crude sunflower and crude soybean oils) stood at 11.51 lakh tonnes in June.
Among refined edible oils, RBD palmolein imports rose to 1.63 lakh tonnes in June against 1.45 lakh tonnes a year earlier.
Non-edible oil imports fell to 18,497 tonnes in June from 23,178 tonnes in June 2024.
SEA said agencies, including NAFED, HAFED and NCDEX, are currently holding approximately 14 lakh tonnes of soybean and a similar quantity of rapeseed. "In view of the rising prices of edible oils, the Government of India may consider releasing a substantial quantity of these stocks into the market over the next three months, ahead of the upcoming harvest," SEA said.
With the kharif soybean crop harvest expected in just two and a half months, early liquidation of these stocks will help stabilise prices during the festive season, the industry body added.
"Timely action will not only benefit consumers but also ease the financial and logistical burden on government agencies, while supporting overall domestic availability of edible oils," SEA said.
India, the world's largest edible oil consumer and importer, had edible oil stocks of 15.68 lakh tonnes as of July.
In the first eight months of the oil year 2024-25 (November 2024-June 2025), total vegetable oil imports reached 94.34 lakh tonnes, down 8 per cent from 102.29 lakh tonnes in the same period last year.

Therefore, we will have to undertake an increase as well in September," Iyer further said. The Mercedes-Benz official also stated that around 80 per cent of the company's new car sales are financed. "So, when you look at the EMIs, we have tried to keep the same, though the price of the car has gone up. So, that helps us to mitigate the impact of price increase to a large extent," Iyer added. He also noted that there is still demand in the market, and with the economy growing, people will like to buy luxury cars. Buyers understand that prices are beyond the control of the company, considering the currency fluctuation, he said. When asked if the company is facing production issues due to rare earth magnets, Iyer said that the company is not yet affected by the supply chain disruption. 'We also have sufficient stocks with us, so we are able to navigate and manage it," he added. Iyer also noted that the company's growth could be flat this year due to ongoing geopolitical issues and other challenges. He said that while the overall passenger vehicle market has been growing by two-three per cent, the luxury car segment has seen higher growth at around five-six per cent this year. "Of course, one would love much higher growth rates, but considering what's happening worldwide geopolitically, I think growth in the automotive industry by itself is a positive sign as such," Iyer stated. Himachal CM meets finance minister Sitharaman, urges increase in borrowing limit for state

(PTI) During the meeting, the chief minister apprised Union minister Sitharaman of the financial situation of Himachal Pradesh and urged for increasing the borrowing limit of the state. He also informed the Union minister about the massive losses incurred due to recent heavy rains and flash-floods in the state and urged the Centre for assistance. Himachal Pradesh has been witnessing large scale destruction since the onset of monsoon in the state. As per the state disaster management authority (SDMA), a total of 105 lives have been lost since June 20. Out of these, 61 people lost their lives in landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, fire incidents, and electrocution, as per the official cumulative report released by the state emergency operations centre (SEOC). Forty four people lost their lives in road mishaps, which have seen a sharp increase due to the slippery terrain, poor visibility, and road damage caused by relentless rainfall. The state so far had registered damages worth over ₹784.6 crore to both public and private property across sectors, including roads, agriculture, power, education, animal husbandry, and rural infrastructure. CM pushes for strengthening air connectivity in the state Chief minister Sukhu also called on Union civil aviation minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu at New Delhi on Monday and held detailed discussions about strengthening air connectivity in the state. Sukhu urged the Union minister to allow the operation of Delhi-Shimla-Dharamshala and Dharamshala-Shimla-Delhi flights on a daily basis, highlighting that at present these flights were operational only three days a week, causing inconvenience to the tourists. He also requested the commencement of night landing facilities at Dharamshala airport. Sukhu apprised the Union minister regarding the status of the Kangra airport expansion and sought special assistance for the land acquisition process, citing its high cost. He mentioned that the issue had also been raised with the Prime Minister during a previous meeting and sought the continued support of the ministry of civil aviation, emphasising that this would accelerate the region's development. CM Sukhu also requested the construction of four new heliports to further strengthen air connectivity and boost tourism in the state. Discussions were also held regarding the expansion of Shimla airport. The CM urged the Union minister to extend the operational watch hours beyond 1 pm at Shimla airport and also proposed the operation of Dornier-type aircraft at Shimla, following the example of the northeastern states. He emphasised the need to encourage additional operators to start flight services to Shimla.
