Sony announced this via a press release, describing it as a strategic partnership between Bandai Namco and Sony. As part of the deal, it has acquired 16 million Bandai Namco shares for approximately 68 billion yen, which works to around $464 million.
Notably, this is not Sony's only recent strategic investment. The company has recently invested in several other domains, including an investment in FromSoftware's parent company, Kadokawa, after which the company acquired a 10% stake for approximately $300 million.
Here is what Sony and Bandai Namco had to say
"Through this business alliance and Sony's investment in Bandai Namco, as two of the leading Japanese entertainment companies, Bandai Namco and Sony will focus on expanding the fan community for IP such as anime and manga around the world and strengthening engagement, particularly in the anime field where rapid market growth is anticipated, while merging their strengths to create new and emotionally moving experiences for fans, and as a result of these efforts maximize the value of IP,' Sony said in a press release.
Sony added, 'Bandai Namco and Sony have historically collaborated on various projects in the fields such as games, anime and music, and they plan to extend this collaboration to a broader range of areas. The two companies intend to implement initiatives including the expansion of works as well as products and services based on IP developed by Bandai Namco, leveraging Sony's strengths in areas such as the production and distribution of anime and other video content, as well as merchandising.'
Bandai Namco's Nobuhiko Momoi said, 'The Bandai Namco Group promotes an 'IP axis strategy; that aims to maximize IP value by leveraging the appeal and worldview of IP, providing the optimal products and services at the optimal timing in the optimal regions.
Momoi also added that Bandai Namco is "filled with excitement about the potential to create new entertainment by combining Sony Group's strengths and technological capabilities across various entertainment fields with Bandai Namco's IP axis strategy. Through this collaboration, we aim to connect with IP fans worldwide, co-create the future together, and realize our Purpose, 'Fun for All into the Future,' and Mid- to Long-term Vision, 'Connect with Fans.''

Rugby: A Video game release and players complaining about it: Latest drama in Rugby Leagues in Australia
Appearances not matching on screen coupled with players complaining about the ratings on a new Rugby league video game in Australia. That's what National Women's Rugby League (NRLW) and National Rugby League players in Australia have been complaining about with NRLW players like Millie Elliott of Sydney Roosters and Kennedy Cherrington of Parramatta Eels criticising the newly launched rugby video game in recent days. The Rugby League 26 video game was launched on July 17 earlier this month and the last ten days have seen rugby players association taking up the matter with Elliot being the first to criticise the game over the looks and ratings of the players. Elliot, who is married to NRL player Adam Elliot, rated that her character 'looked nothing like her'. '(Adam) sent me the photo of my character and I will say it looks absolutely nothing like me. It looks nothing like me. Adam looks like his own doppelganger. It looks exactly like him. And also, apparently I've been rated out of 100 (at) 53. I don't know if that's good? So that's not very good apparently. That's an insult? Right, OK. So firstly it looks nothing like me and secondly, I'm the sh**test footy player on there. You'd think with AI and all this technology these days, that they could get it looking a little similar,' Elliot told Triple M. The Rugby League 26 Video Game was first announced by the NRL on June 25 earlier this year and was released on July 17 this month over different gaming platforms like Playstation, Xbox and personal computers. With the game's producing studio Big Ant Studios developing the game and undertaking the facial scans of the players apart from other data in association with the NRL over the last few weeks, the game has seen a lot of glitches since its launch including lag time as well discrepancies in terms of facial features well as player's ratings. Apart from Elliot, who also complained about her ratings, Eels star Kennedy Cherrington was also critical of the game. 'This might seem petty, but as a player that features in the new RL26 game, I'm not happy. Maybe we should just be grateful that we're in the game but overall I know the fans aren't happy too. From the facial scans to the player ratings & even the gameplay nahhh. I was so keen to get sweaty on the game this weekend! But it's put me off. That update better be incoming soon haha.' Cherrington posted on X earlier. As per Australian media, players scans were done between games and more scans are set to take place in the next week's NRLW Magic Round in NewCastle with other scans in NRL also scheduled to take place later in the year. As per Sydney Morning Herald, the Rugby League Players Association has privately questioned the roll out of the video game followed by the player complaints in recent days. 'The first part is obviously remedying the issues and the concerns [with the game], and having the NRL work with us. And then any activation that involved player IP use, particularly on this scale that obviously impacts the way this has, that requires involvement and inclusion [of players] up front. That's the learning from this.' Newton told Sydney Morning Herald. As per the paper, some of the clubs and players did not know about the facial scans to be done during the past few weeks. When contacted by Sydney Morning Herald, the studio's chief executive Ross Symons talked about the issue. 'We went to great lengths to capture NRL and NRLW players in person. All players – equally from both the NRL and NRLW – who chose to attend the photogrammetry sessions are accurately and faithfully represented in the game.' Symons told Sydney Morning Herald.

TV producer promised prime time, delivered a scam: Actress duped of ₹24 lakh
MUMBAI: A 27-year-old actress who recently walked the red carpet at Cannes has accused a television producer of cheating her of ₹24 lakh under the guise of offering high returns from an 'approved' Sony TV serial that never existed. TV producer promised prime time, delivered a scam: Actress duped of ₹ 24 lakh Oshiwara police have registered a case against the accused, Karan Singh Chauhan, 36, a self-styled producer, who allegedly lured the actress, Ruchi Gujjar, into investing in a fictional project that he claimed was greenlit by Sony and destined for release on OTT platforms. According to the complaint, Gujjar met Chauhan at his Oshiwara office in 2023. 'He claimed he had strong industry connections and was producing a daily soap for Sony TV. He promised I would earn massive returns if I came on board as an investor,' Gujjar told the police. To back his story, Chauhan arranged a meeting with one Nazia Sheikh at the Sony TV office in Malad, allegedly presenting her as the executive who would approve the show. At the meeting, Sheikh remained non-committal, but Chauhan later assured Gujjar that the project had been cleared. Believing she was backing a legitimate production, Gujjar transferred ₹24 lakh to Chauhan. But when the promised profits didn't materialise and calls went unanswered, she began digging. It was only when Gujjar contacted Sheikh directly that the mask slipped—Sony TV had never approved any such show, she was told. When confronted, Chauhan allegedly admitted he had lied about the approval and had used the funds to produce a film titled So Long Valley. He pleaded for time, saying he would repay her once the film rights were sold. That too, turned out to be a false promise. On June 25, Gujjar discovered that So Long Valley had already been released—without any profit-sharing, credit, or returns made to her. Realising she had been conned, she filed a police complaint on Thursday. 'We have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating and criminal breach of trust. The financial transactions are under scrutiny and the accused will be summoned for questioning,' said an officer from Oshiwara police station.
