PENAMPANG: The Momogun National Congress (MNC) has not given up seeking official recognition of the term 'Momogun' as a collective name for the indigenous peoples of Sabah.MNC President, Tan Sri Wences Angang, said despite opposition by a small number of Momogun groups, MNC stands by the support and desire of 77 Sabah indigenous NGOs for 'Momogun' as their collective name. 'We continue to wait for the State Government to pass the MNC's resolution to adopt the Momogun Declaration which requires that 'Momogun' be placed in Government forms. We have submitted the declaration to the Chief Minister as well as the previous Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Juhar,' he said. 'We also await the actual implementation of the new non-politicised format of the Native Court, manned by permanent and pensionable staffers.' 'If Kadazans, Dusuns, Muruts, Bisayas, Tidongs and Orang Sungais (Paitanics) were to be counted as separate individual groups, their respective numbers would be small and insignificant. 'But if they are counted as a group they will exceed the strong one million mark in Sabah's population of three million,' he said. 'We are now facing a serious existential threat, and for this we will continue our dialogue with the Momogun signatories and other Momogun NGOs to seek ways to counter threats from globalisation.' He said part of their approach is to seek worldwide recognition by aligning MNC with the International Indigenous Peoples' Movement. 'MNC is organizing for the third time the annual International Indigenous Peoples' Day to be held in Tenom next month.' Wences, a former assemblyman and Deputy Chief Minister, who is from the Tatana ethnic group, said MNC is also looking into the possibility of organizing the World Rural Development Day, beginning next year in collaboration with the Momogun signatories and other Momogun NGOs. He stressed that MNC must take advantage of the international day which was declared by the United Nation's General Assembly last July 6 to reaffirm the UN's unwavering commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He said MNC is also working to enhance the teaching of the English language being carried out by Institute for Indigenous Economic Progress (INDEP), under its 'Be an English Speaker Today' (BEST) program. 'English is the crucial language to enable Momoguns to gain high paying employment and to participate effectively in global affairs,' he stressed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Organising committee finalises seven-point declaration ahead of 722 Independence Day parade
(From left) Organising Committee members of the 722 Sarawak Independence Day Cultural Parade 2025 — Alim GA Mideh (Publicity), Bruce Walker (Treasurer), Haji Awang Ahmad (Advisor), Patrick Anek (Legal), Dominique Ng (Legal), Francis James Noew (Organising Chairman), Anthony David (Organising Secretary), and Raymond Thong (Advisor) pose for a photo call. KUCHING (July 14): The Organising Committee of the 722 Sarawak Independence Day Cultural Parade 2025 has finalised the Seven 722 Sarawak Independence Day Declarations. These declarations, rooted in Sarawak's historical rights and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), will be formally adopted and proclaimed during the cultural parade on July 22, 2025. The declarations outline seven key demands and will be displayed on large banners during the event for public endorsement. Both English and Malay versions will be available, similar to the banners used during the 2013 (Telang Usan) and 2018 (Tasek Biru, Bau) commemorations. 'In witness whereof, we hereby adopt and proclaim this Declaration on the 22nd day of July, 2025, as an affirmation of our unity, rights, and sovereign identity as the People of Sarawak,' a committee spokesperson said when contacted. The public will be invited to sign these banners, symbolising support for the declaration. These signed declarations will then be submitted to the Governor of Sarawak and the Premier for further action. The first declaration calls for the full implementation of the MA63, regarded as the foundational legal instrument for the formation of the Federation of Malaysia. The committee demands that the agreement be honoured without delay, including the restoration of Sarawak's original legislative, fiscal, judicial, and administrative autonomy. The second declaration calls for Sarawak's exclusion from the Petroleum Development Act 1974, which the committee argues was enacted without the consent of the Sarawak government or the Sarawak Legislative Assembly. It reaffirms Sarawak's exclusive regulatory authority over petroleum and natural resources within its territorial boundaries, both onshore and offshore. The third point demands that all Native Customary Rights (NCR) land be recognised, surveyed, documented, and granted individual titles under Section 18 of the Sarawak Land Code. It stresses that the land rights of indigenous communities must not be infringed upon without consent and fair compensation. Another key demand is free higher education for all 'bangsa Sarawak', to ensure equitable access to knowledge, development, and self-determination. The fifth point also advocates for the equitable distribution of employment and business, with priority given to Sarawakians in both public and private sectors. The sixth point calls for the revival and formal recognition of the Sarawak Rangers as a state-regimented institution to help preserve Sarawak's martial heritage and ensure local security. Finally, the declaration calls for the protection of educational institutions from religious influence, stating that all academic institutions in Sarawak must remain secular and independent. This is to safeguard freedom of belief, interfaith harmony, and Sarawak's cultural pluralism. The organising committee described the declarations as a 'a matter of legal, moral, and political imperative,' urging authorities and institutions across Malaysia to honour and implemetn them. The 722 Sarawak Independence Day Cultural Parade 2025 will take place at Tasik Biru, Bau on July 22 to commemorate Sarawak's attainment of self-government in 1963. 722 gathering declaration Malaysia Agreement 1963 Sarawak independence day

Liberia responds to Trump's English remark with humour and pride
MONROVIA: Liberia has dismissed any offence over US president Donald Trump's remark about president Joseph Boakai's English fluency, calling the meeting an honour. The incident has since inspired a viral tribute song celebrating Boakai as the 'English King of Africa.' During a White House summit with African leaders, Trump praised Boakai's English skills, seemingly unaware that English is Liberia's official language. Boakai, who was educated in Liberia, responded with an awkward laugh. Liberian foreign minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti confirmed no offence was taken, emphasising Liberia's desire to strengthen US ties through mutual respect. Liberia, founded by freed American slaves in 1822, has deep historical connections with the US. Singer and former cultural ambassador Queen Juli Endee released a song praising Boakai, calling him the 'Beautiful English King of Africa.' The video, featuring US flags and images of both leaders, has gained traction online. Public reactions in Liberia were mixed. Shadrach Johnson, an unemployed resident, saw Boakai's invitation as progress. However, street trader Patience Allison viewed Trump's comment as disrespectful, saying it mocked the president. - AFP
