PM Anwar calls for laws to protect copyright, local creativity amid AI boom
Anwar said the Communications Ministry and the Digital Ministry must take immediate action to ensure that local works are protected from risks and vulnerabilities arising from the advancement of AI technology, such as plagiarism.
"On the issue of copyright, the protection is not limited to cartoonists but also covers films, poems and other creative works, which at times face copyright challenges due to the development of AI,' he said at the launch of 'Melukis Dengan Hati: Biografi Perjalanan Seni 50 Tahun Karya Zunar' at Pustaka Raja Tun Uda on Tuesday (July 22).
"This legal protection is to ensure that creativity and the artistic abilities of creators are not stifled by copyright disputes or questions over the authenticity of their works,' he added.
Present at the launch were Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Also present were the Prime Minister's wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; Selangor Public Library Corporation director, Datin Paduka Mastura Muhamad; and renowned cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwarul Haque, better known as Zunar. – Bernama

NACSA Finalising Malaysia's Cybersecurity Strategy 2025-2030 -- Digital Ministry KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- The National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) is finalising Malaysia's Cyber Security Strategy (MCSS) 2025–2030 as a continuation of the MCSS 2020–2024, said the Ministry of Digital. The ministry said the MCSS will involve three key stakeholders: the government, businesses and the community. 'It also takes into account emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and all related cybersecurity threats to ensure comprehensive protection of the country's digital ecosystem,' it posted on the Parliament's website. The Digital Ministry was responding to Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (BN-Sembrong) on national data security and sovereignty concerns regarding transparency in the training of artificial intelligence (AI) systems such as DeepSeek and the use of Huawei chips. The ministry added that it is also taking proactive steps to establish an AI security committee to review technical aspects and ensure compliance with security and ethical standards, including assessments of foreign technology. 'This committee will consist of experts from various fields in both the public and private sectors to strengthen governance and ensure that the development and use of AI in Malaysia remain safe, responsible, and aligned with national principles,' it said. Meanwhile, responding to a question from Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (PN-Parit) regarding the progress of 5G coverage, the Ministry of Digital said that Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) has developed the 5G network to reach 82.4 per cent coverage in populated areas (COPA), with a total of 7,489 5G sites as of June 30, 2025. Additionally, the ministry said the country's 5G penetration rate reached 80.4 per cent, with approximately 27.4 million active subscribers as of May 2025, further solidifying the country's position as a regional leader in digital connectivity and communication technology transformation. -- BERNAMA

13MP will provide rural students with greater access to TVET training, says VC

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Students in rural areas will have access to more affordable technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes under the numerous 13th Malaysia Plan initiatives, an academic said. Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka vice-chancellor Massila Kamalrudin said the full scholarships offered would not only cover training fees, but also the cost of living, which would allow the B40 and M40 to further their studies without placing too much financial burden on these groups. 'A mobile TVET programme and a satellite training centre will allow for TVET to be introduced to more rural areas and the Orang Asli community, who did not have proper access to TVET institutions in the past. 'Such an approach means that no one is left behind in the country's development,' she said in a statement. Tabling the 13MP yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government will introduce a Madani TVET financing scheme and a TVET training fund. Massila said the training fund would help equip students with the skills to match the demands of the market in sectors such as renewable energy, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. She said youths are gravitating more towards TVET as it provided a clearer career path. 'TVET graduates don't just obtain certificates, but are guaranteed jobs due to tie-ups with the industry,' she said. Separately, the University of Cyberjaya described the 13MP as a 'roadmap for reshaping the human capital landscape of Malaysia'. Its vice-chancellor, David Whitford, hailed the five-year plan's emphasis on AI literacy, digital skills, and entrepreneurship. 'We also support the MP13's proposed pilot autonomy for universities, recognising this as a critical step toward greater innovation, agility, and accountability in higher education,' he said.

1.2 million jobs via TVET, digital econ

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) with the theme 'Redesigning' at the Dewan Rakyat, said that the TVET programme would also be expanded to tahfiz students to produce Madani huffaz technocrats with added value in technical expertise. The government, he said, will also expand the TVET curriculum to include the field of ageing with special incentives for students undergoing industrial training. 'TVET programmes are gaining popularity. In 2024 alone, 212,000 new admissions into TVET programmes were recorded,' he said, adding that the Madani TVET programme will be strengthened to increase the mastery of skills that can generate higher income, including for tahfiz and huffaz students. 'At the same time, the level of TVET certification will be increased by introducing three new levels of expertise, six to eight, to be equivalent to the level of higher education qualifications under the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF). This effort aims to recognise high skills in technical fields and expand career paths, in line with market needs,' said the prime minister. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said TVET graduates are also enjoying increasingly competitive incomes, most of which exceeded the minimum wage of RM1,700. 'About 95.6 per cent of TVET graduates are able to secure employment within six months of completing their training,' he said. He said the close collaboration between TVET institutions and industry would serve as a catalyst for technological transfer and skills enhancement in line with initiatives by the Ministry of Higher Education. 'The structure of TVET programme offerings will be re-strategised with a focus on high-growth, high-value (HGHV) and advanced technology-based industries. 'This is in line with labour market demands and strategic industry needs such as in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) project and the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP),' he said.
