An Ottawa taxi being towed after the driver appeared to fall asleep on the side of Highway 417. (OPP/X) An Ottawa taxi driver could face stiff penalties for allegedly having an early morning snooze on the side of the highway on Canada Day. Ontario Provincial Police say in a post on X that officers were called to check on a driver who 'appeared to be sleeping' on Highway 417 by Bronson Avenue shortly after 6 a.m. The driver was charged with failure or refusal to comply with a demand after refusing to provide a roadside breath sample, police say. They will also face a charge under the Highway Traffic Act for stopping a vehicle on a prohibited part of a highway. The driver is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa later this month.
