Rookie hazing has been a long-standing tradition in the
NBA
. In a league where rookie hazing still lingers as an unspoken rite of passage, Paul George just broke the tradition. During a recent episode of his Podcast P, the nine-time All-Star took the high road by refusing to haze newly drafted Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe.
His kindhearted gesture was a moment of mutual respect, subtle mentorship, and an early sign that George's leadership in Philly might go well beyond the box score.
Paul George trades pranks for praise and sets a new tone
It all started when Edgecombe, the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, appeared on Podcast P. George introduced the 19-year-old with a big smile, 'My young fella, my rook, VJ Edgecombe.' The vibe was lighthearted, co-host Jackie Long even teased the rookie, urging George to make him fetch drinks.

But George wasn't playing that game. 'Not yet. Good start. We gonna take a little break,' he said, diffusing the moment without turning it into a locker-room ritual. Instead of reinforcing outdated traditions, George offered him trust.
George has consistently dismissed over-the-top rookie duties. "I'm simple. Carry my PlayStation, man, we good,' he once joked to Jared McCain. It's a stark contrast to the old-school tactics of NBA veterans like Shaquille O'Neal, who once infamously defecated in a teammate's sneakers.
George commented on that incident with disbelief, 'I ain't seen nothing like that, bro. That's over the top.'
'Bring what you do. Be you,' George told him. 'We're going to adapt to you.'
VJ Edgecombe is already turning heads with skill and mentality
Edgecombe, a standout at Baylor and Big 12 Freshman of the Year, is more than just hype. He brings a blend of athleticism and defensive edge that the Sixers desperately need. George recognized that immediately after Edgecombe's pre-draft workout.
'By the end of that day, they were like, 'We know who we're taking.' VJ's our guy,' he revealed.
On Podcast P, he openly admitted to hating the cramped, slow style of college basketball. 'I was also dealing with two centers… I got no space to operate,' he said. Now, with NBA spacing and pace, he feels free to play to his strengths: explosive drives, strong transition play, and secondary creation.
Despite a thumb sprain limiting his Summer League minutes, Edgecombe averaged 21.5 points and looked NBA-ready.
George sees that. And instead of molding him into a quiet role player, he's giving him permission to shine from day one.
In a locker room with stars like Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, Edgecombe doesn't need to be humbled. He needs to be empowered. And Paul George, with 16 years of NBA wisdom, just might be the perfect veteran to make that happen.

NBA Trade News: Los Angeles Lakers Add 4x ACC POTW to Bolster Squad Around Luka Doncic and LeBron James

LeBron James and Luka Doncic (Image via Getty) In a savvy offseason move, the Los Angeles Lakers have signed RJ Davis, the 2024 ACC Player of the Year from North Carolina, after he went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft. Davis joins a reshaped Lakers squad headlined by Luka Doncic and veteran leader LeBron James , as the franchise continues to retool its roster to compete in the upcoming season. Who Is RJ Davis? RJ Davis was one of the most decorated guards in college basketball. Spending five seasons at UNC, Davis ended his collegiate career as the third-highest scorer in ACC history and second all-time at North Carolina. His final year saw him average 17.2 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game, shooting 41.3% from the field and 35.4% from beyond the arc. Despite his production and leadership, Davis went undrafted—likely due to size concerns at the NBA level. However, his scoring ability, reliable shooting—particularly off the catch—and maturity as a floor general caught the Los Angeles Lakers' attention. RJ Davis' Contract Details and Implications LeBron James and Luka Doncic (Image Source - Getty Images) RJ Davis has signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Los Angeles, giving him a shot to earn a full-time role through training camp. The deal allows the Lakers to convert his contract into a two-way slot or assign him to their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, where he could earn up to $85,300 if he remains with the team for 60 days. This signing is part of a broader developmental push by the Los Angeles Lakers, who also added college standouts Eric Dixon, Arthur Kaluma, and Augustas Marčiulionis. The front office is clearly emphasizing youth, shooting, and high basketball IQ to round out the bench. How Davis Complements Doncic and LeBron The arrival of Luka Doncic last season changed the team's core dynamics. With Doncic and LeBron now at the helm, the Lakers are seeking role players who can stretch the floor, handle the ball, and defend. Davis offers a skill set that fits seamlessly into this strategy: • Perimeter Shooting: Davis thrives as a catch-and-shoot option, perfect for spacing the floor around Doncic and James. • Secondary Playmaker: His experience as a lead guard in college means he can relieve ball-handling pressure when needed. • Defensive Hustle: While not physically imposing, Davis is quick and competitive on defense, capable of pestering opposing guards. • Mature Approach: With 175 college games under his belt, Davis brings composure and decision-making that often eludes younger NBA players. Los Angeles Lakers' Rebuilding and Contending Plan This offseason signals a clear dual-pronged approach from the Los Angeles Lakers. In addition to established names like Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, the franchise is investing in unheralded prospects like Davis who may blossom in the right system. As LeBron nears the twilight of his career, the focus has shifted to building a roster that can win now while grooming future contributors around Doncic. General manager Rob Pelinka and new head coach JJ Redick appear committed to fostering internal growth, creating opportunities for players like Davis to earn their spot in a competitive environment. RJ Davis may be an under-the-radar signing, but his accolades, shooting stroke, and seasoned mindset give him a real shot at cracking the Los Angeles Lakers' rotation. If he proves himself during training camp and in the G League, he could become a reliable spark plug off the bench—someone who adds shooting, smarts, and energy in crucial minutes. Davis's college legacy—complete with big-time shots in March and ACC dominance—suggests he's no stranger to pressure. With the bright lights of Los Angeles ahead of him, he'll look to carve out his place alongside two of the game's biggest stars. Jonathan Kuminga, Cam Thomas and Josh Giddey eye $30 million yearly deals amidst the free agency

Jonathan Kuminga is a remarkable player (Image via Instagram / @jonathan_kuminga) There is always excitement surrounding contract rumors in the NBA, and this time is no exception. Although other restricted free agents are currently unsigned, none have been as dramatic as Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors' standoff. The talk also centers around Josh Giddey and Cam Thomas, who are both vying for contracts worth $30 million a season. However, the prognosis for these young stars is complicated, as reportedly not a lot of teams want to give them a chance. Jonathan Kuminga , Josh Giddey, and Cam Thomas are stuck in a free agency mix over million-dollar contract demands In an attempt to find a solution to their restricted free agency issue with forward Jonathan Kuminga, the Golden State Warriors have been stuck this offseason. While Stephen Curry was out due to injury, Jonathan Kuminga led the Golden State Warriors during the second round of the NBA playoffs to close out his 2024-25 season. Although the team was pleased to see their former seventh-overall choice perform so well, it has now backfired. He had been requesting an average yearly salary of about $30 million in his next contract from the G.S. Warriors after he had some of his finest games of his career. However, it has been claimed that he does not want to return to the Golden State. On the other hand, according to prominent NBA journalist Marc Stein, the Brooklyn Nets are not in a hurry to speed up their contract with Cam Thomas' representatives. This is because he, just like Josh Giddey , is seeking a wage that may be viewed as ambitious. Teams are forced to play the waiting game in this scenario, weighing their choices before making such large commitments. Jonathan Kuminga is yet to settle (Image via Instagram / jonathan_kuminga) The situation is comparable for the Chicago Bulls and the Golden State Warriors. Josh Giddey and Jonathan Kuminga want to ensure their financial stability in the league. In reality, though, very few organizations are prepared to spend that much money before witnessing reliable on-court performance. These players are now under pressure to demonstrate that they deserve $30 million. The G.S. Warriors have been actively looking at sign-and-trade options to find Jonathan Kuminga a new home. However, it should come as no surprise that they are not eager to pay him a lot of money. "You got to check those boxes' — Kendrick Perkins leaves Chris Paul out of his top 10 point guards list

Chris Paul is a promising player (Image via Instagram / @cp3) A prominent NBA analyst's list of the top ten guards in the league did not include Chris Paul, the recently acquired star of the Los Angeles Clippers. Even though ESPN's Kendrick Perkins, who played against the said player in the AAU and then the NBA, considers him to be the real "point god," he places him in his Top 15 rather than the top 10. Recently, the analyst opened up about the same thing. Kendrick Perkins explains why Chris Paul falls outside his top 10 point guards The Los Angeles Clippers ' Chris Paul is seen by most as one of the greatest point guards ever in NBA history. The 40-year-old is now close to the end of his career as he begins his 21st season in the league. Kendrick Perkins made one comparison apparent, but he didn't provide a comprehensive list of those who rate higher than CP3. He has a higher opinion of the former Oklahoma City Thunder player Russell Westbrook. He stated during the most recent podcast episode Road Trippin': "I don't have CP3 ranked above Russell Westbrook. Like CP3 does a lot of things, changes the franchise, win a lot of games and things? Yes, absolutely. I would never take that away from him. Since he was drafted by the Pelicans, he changed that franchise…' He continued: "He goes to the Clippers, winning organization. Goes to the Phoenix Suns, winning organization. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Making history: These 5 timepieces set world records at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 CNA Read More Undo But when it comes to rankings, you got to check those boxes and you got to have the accolades. And when I say accolades, yes, championships and Finals MVP. But CP3 don't have one MVP." Originally broadcast on Basketball Network, Kendrick Perkins discussed why he does not consider Chris Paul to be one of the top ten point guards in NBA history: "I don't have him ranked above Russell Westbrook.' Chris Paul recently joined the L.A. Clippers (Image via Instagram / @cp3) He further stated that Russell Westbrook's triple-double record-breaking games and MVP run stand out. The Milwaukee Bucks came back with four straight victories after CP3 led the Phoenix Suns to within two games of the 2021 NBA championship. After winning Game 1, Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder made it to the Finals in 2012 as well. However, it is not certain what additional accomplishments Kendrick Perkins wants for Chris Paul aside from a championship or a regular-season MVP. Meanwhile, the new L.A. Clippers' player will always be regarded as one of the NBA's most knowledgeable and significant point guards, regardless of this comment.
