Jackson Merrill gets immediate update from Mike Shildt amid injury scare
The post Jackson Merrill gets immediate update from Mike Shildt amid injury scare appeared first on ClutchPoints. San Diego Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill is on his way to MLB superstardom. Merrill is following up his breakout rookie campaign with a strong sophomore season for the Padres. But the 22-year-old All-Star could miss some time after getting banged up in Saturday's matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Advertisement Merrill was caught stealing to end the seventh inning. But the tag by Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte nailed him in the head, forcing his batting helmet down hard on his face. After being tagged out, Merrill stayed down on the infield dirt near second base for some time, in obvious pain. The Padres' trainers quickly came out to check on the center fielder and eventually he was able to walk off the field under his own power, flanked by staffers. But Merrill wasn't able to stay in the game. Following the contest, manager Mike Shildt said that Merrill is feeling 'woozy,' according to The San Diego Union-Tribune's Annie Heilbrunn on X. Shildt added that the team has not yet decided if they'll place him in the concussion protocol. Advertisement Padres' star Jackson Merrill forced from Diamondbacks game Allan Henry-Imagn Images Merrill missed a wild finish Saturday. The Padres led 5-3 when he was forced from the game with the injury after the seventh inning. San Diego then added two insurance runs in the ninth to take a commanding 7-3 lead over Arizona. But it ultimately didn't matter as the Diamondbacks put up five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, pulling off the stunning 8-7 win on Josh Naylor's walk-off RBI. Just a week ago the Padres were closing in on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. San Diego was just a game out of first place and looked poised to take the lead in the division. But the Padres have now lost three straight games and seven of their last 10. San Diego is now 38-31 on the season and three games behind the first-place Dodgers. Advertisement However, the Padres are still very much in the NL Wild Card hunt. And the team could decide to go all-in at the trade deadline to improve their chances at a deep playoff run. Last season San Diego finished 93-69 and reached the NLDS, eventually losing to the Dodgers 3-2 in the best-of-five series. Still, Merrill will be key to any hope the Padres have of making the postseason. His injury status will be closely monitored. Series Preview #30: Diamondbacks @ Padres
The Diamondbacks head to San Diego to take on the Padres. The Friars go into the series tied with the Giants for the final wild card position, while Arizona is 4.5 games back and the fan base is losing hope. If there is to be any chance of being buyers at the deadline, this is a must win series (Sorry, running late for work, so this is going to be a quick one) Advertisement Game 1 — 7/7, 6:40 PM — Zac Gallen (6-9, 5.54 ERA, 77 ERA+, 1.63 WHIP) vs Yu Darvish (First start) Yu Darvish will take the mound for the first time in the 2025 season. He had been out with elbow inflammation since Spring Training, something of a little extra concern since he has had one Tommy John surgery already. Those fears seem to be behind them now, as he'll face off against the Diamondbacks in game 1. Game 2 — 7/8, 6:40PM — Merrill Kelly (7-4, 3.55 ERA, 118 ERA+, 1.087 WHIP) vs. Nick Pivetta (9-2, 3.25 ERA, 127 ERA+, 1.04 WHIP) Pivetta was an offseason signing for the Padres who has worked out very well. He's had a couple games where he's given up four or more runs, but overall, he's kept the Padres in the games he's started, all while pitching into the sixth inning. Really, I see a lot of similarities in his results to Merrill Kelly, his opposite in this game. Advertisement Game 3 — 7/9, 6:40 PM — Brandon Pfaadt (8/6, 5.42 ERA, 77 ERA+, 1.38 WHIP) vs. Dylan Cease (3-8, 4.62 ERA, 90 ERA+, 1.32 WHIP) Cease is having a down year compared to last season where he got Cy Young votes. By ERA+, he's below average, and the Padres are just .500 in games that he's started. In the last four games, he has given up four or more runs three times, and this might be the best chance the Diamondbacks get when facing a pitcher of Cease's overall caliber. Game 4 — 7/10, 6/40 PM — Eduardo Rodriguez (3-5, 5.78 ERA, 72 ERA+, 1.62 WHIP) vs. Randy Vasquez (3-4, 3.79 ERA, 109 ERA+, 1.36 WHIP) Vasquez has had a good run this season. He doesn't go deep into games, but he's been preventing runs during those innings, which is all a team can ask for. He might be a bit on the lucky side, though, as his FIP is a run and a half higher than his ERA. Advertisement Conclusion I don't think most of us are under the delusion that the Diamondbacks are contenders right now. They aren't so far back that there is no possibility that could change, but it's looking more and more unlikely every game. There best chance to make a statement is in this series and make up some serious ground against a division rival. Doesn't seem super likely with the scary trio of Gallen, Pfaadt, and Rodriguez all starting in the same stretch. Hopefully the extra day of rest is exactly what they needed. Best case scenario, however, I see this as a series split. More from

Blue Jays-Diamondbacks trade idea sends $13.5 million star to Toronto
The Toronto Blue Jays are off to a hot start this sitting with a 51-38 record, which is good for first place in the American League East standings. Toronto has some of the best positional players in Major League Baseball, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, but the team could upgrade their pitching staff. Advertisement With the MLB trade deadline approaching at the end of July, the Blue Jays will likely look for another arm. Michael Fisher from Fansided believes the team should consider trading for Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen. "Zac Gallen of the Arizona Diamondbacks has had the worst season of his MLB career. On an expiring contract, the 29-year-old right-hander has a 6-9 record with a 5.45 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 18 starts. However, the right-hander's track record should be enough to entice buyers at the deadline, including the Blue Jays. The former All-Star was a NL Cy Young finalist in 2023, and carried a 53-37 record with a career 3.29 ERA into this season," Fisher wrote. "Gallen's most recent start was a reminder of how good he can be. He held the San Francisco Giants to two runs (one earned) on five hits over seven innings while striking out 10. His other double-digit strikeout effort this season came against the Yankees in April, when he struck out 13 over 6 2/3 innings. That won't go unnoticed by the Blue Jays front office." Gallen, a one-time All-Star in 2023, could upgrade the Blue Jays' pitching staff in a second if he is traded to the team. Follow The Sporting News On WhatsApp Gallen is in the final year of a $13.5 million deal, which would make him a rental for Toronto.
