SGX Review: STI Hits Record High Amid Global Optimism And Property Rally
The STI surged past the 4,100 mark during intraday trading on July 11, peaking at 4,102.97 before paring gains slightly by the close. For the week, the index advanced steadily, supported by optimism over easing trade tensions, favourable interest rate dynamics and encouraging signals from the US labour market.
Property developers and real estate investment trusts (REITs) led gains as falling Singapore government bond yields improved the relative appeal of income-generating assets. City Developments Ltd rallied toward S$5.40, while UOL Group approached its 52-week high of S$6.50, buoyed by strong demand and favourable valuations.
However, the recent implementation of new Seller's Stamp Duty rules effective July 4 added a layer of caution to the property sector. The revised regulations extended holding periods and raised stamp duty rates, prompting selective re-pricing in residential property stocks.
Technology and financial stocks also contributed to the STI's gains. Market participants noted increased institutional interest in tech-enabled growth counters, helped by improving earnings prospects and a softening in global interest rate expectations.
The week's bullish tone was underpinned by robust US economic data, including a stronger-than-expected jobs report and signs of progress in global trade negotiations, particularly with Vietnam and the European Union. These developments reduced fears of escalating protectionism, further supporting investor appetite for risk assets.
With the STI up around 6% year-to-date, analysts remain cautiously optimistic.
Looking ahead, investors will be closely watching upcoming US inflation data, Federal Reserve meeting minutes and corporate results from SGX-listed companies for further direction. Related

CK Hutchison wants Chinese firm to join bidding for its US$22.8 billion ports business
HONG KONG: CK Hutchison said on Monday it wants a major Chinese strategic investor to join the BlackRock-led consortium bidding for its US$22.8 billion ports business, after media reported that state-owned China COSCO Shipping Corp aims to join the group. The Hong Kong conglomerate in a statement said changes to the composition of the consortium and structure of the transaction will be necessary to secure regulatory approval, and that it will allow as much time as needed to achieve that. A 145-day exclusivity period for talks between the parties expired on Sunday. CK Hutchison's Hong Kong-listed shares were due to open higher just shy of one per cent on Monday. A deal would cover 43 ports in 23 countries including two ports near the Panama Canal which links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. US President Donald Trump initially hailed the sale as "reclaiming" the Panama Canal after his administration called for the removal of what it said was Chinese ownership of some ports. US investment firm BlackRock declined to comment. COSCO, Italian consortium member MSC and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. China views the potential sale as a threat to its interests, seeing the consortium as a proxy for growing American influence in a region it considers economically and geopolitically significant. State-backed media, in criticism of the sale, said China has significant national interests in the matter and that selling the ports would be a betrayal of the country. China's top market regulator said it was paying close attention to developments and stressed the deal would be subject to a Chinese antitrust review. CK Hutchison in its statement said any new investor must be a "significant" member of the consortium. "This is an interesting development. A PRC (China) investor with majority control of the consortium sounds like a non-starter in my view. An investor with a less than 50 per cent stake you would think should keep everyone happy," said strategist David Blennerhassett of Ballingal Investment Advisors who publishes on SmartKarma.

Human control in AI race
PREMIER Li Qiang has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) development must be weighed against security risks, saying global consensus is urgently needed even as the tech race between Beijing and Washington shows no sign of abating. His remarks came just days after US President Donald Trump unveiled an aggressive low-regulation strategy aimed at cementing US dominance in the fast-moving field, promising to 'remove red tape and onerous regulation' that could hinder private sector AI development. Opening the World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, Li emphasised the need for governance and open-source development, announcing the establishment of a Chinese-led body for international AI cooperation. 'The risks and challenges brought by artificial intelligence have drawn widespread attention... How to find a balance between development and security urgently requires further consensus from the entire society,' the premier said yesterday. Li said China would 'actively promote' the development of open-source AI, adding Beijing was willing to share advances with other countries, particularly developing ones. 'If we engage in technological monopolies, controls and blockage, artificial intelligence will become the preserve of a few countries and a few enterprises,' he said. 'Only by adhering to openness, sharing and fairness in access to intelligence can more countries and groups benefit from (AI).' The premier highlighted 'insufficient supply of computing power and chips' as a bottleneck. Washington has expanded its efforts in recent years to curb exports of state-of-the-art chips to China, concerned that these can be used to advance Beijing's military systems and erode US tech dominance. For its part, China has made AI a pillar of its plans for technological self-reliance, with the government pledging a raft of measures to boost the sector. In January, Chinese startup DeepSeek unveiled an AI model that performed as well as top US systems despite using less powerful chips. At a time when AI is being integrated across virtually all industries, its uses have raised major ethical questions, from the spread of misinformation to its impact on employment, or the potential loss of technological control. In a speech at WAIC yesterday, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Geoffrey Hinton compared the situation to keeping 'a very cute tiger cub as a pet'. 'To survive', he said, you need to ensure you can train it not to kill you when it grows up. — AFP
