IIT Bombay launches certificate course in ‘Supply Chain Analytics with AI & ML,' enrolments open; check details

Offered by IIT Bombay's Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR), the six-month course has been launched through Great Learning, and begins in October 2025.
The course is designed and delivered by IIT Bombay faculty to equip working professionals with an industry-aligned curriculum in supply chain analytics with AI and ML applications.

Learners will be provided with five integrated modules wherein they will understand diverse topics including introduction to data-driven supply chain analytics, demand forecasting and planning, data-driven inventory models, supply chain network design and optimisation, and transportation and risk analysis. The course will also focus on hands-on learning through case studies, and scenario discussions covering advanced inventory models, network designs, machine learning algorithms for demand forecasting, and GenAI for scenario planning.
Notably, the course is tailored for supply chain and operations professionals, consultants, and data and business intelligence professionals in logistics, procurement, inventory, or operations.

In addition, it is also ideal for emerging leaders seeking a strong foundation in advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning within the supply chain domain.
Learners will benefit from weekly live sessions by IIT Bombay faculty and gain an end-to-end understanding of supply chain analytics.
Prof. Usha Ananthakumar Dean Educational Outreach, IIT Bombay, stated that the Certificate in Supply Chain Analytics with AI and ML Applications is a critical step forward in equipping professionals to navigate the increasingly complex and dynamic global supply landscape.

In what makes for a first-of-its-kind model in the country, a team from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has developed a machine learning-based nowcast forecasting system which will analyse weather radars to predict rainfall at least 90 minutes ahead of rains. Set to be launched next week, the model has been installed at Mumbai's Regional Meteorological Centre in Colaba. Once launched, the model will issue nowcast warnings with updates every eight minutes, forecasting rain in Mumbai up to 90 minutes in advance. The data pertaining to the nowcast forecast warnings will be furnished on the website, The AI-powered forecasting system is based on a model developed by Akshay Sunil, a post doc student at IIT Bombay's Centre for Climate Studies. According to Professor Subimal Ghosh, head of the department and the Principal Investigator of the project, the model will work by analysing the rainbands and weather systems over the past few hours to forecast the incoming rain patterns. 'The idea is to analyse the data from the past few hours pertaining to the rainbands, cloud formation, wind speed and other factors. On the basis of such data provided by the radars, the model will use machine learning to understand the existing systems and analyse them to predict the rain over the next hour. The data for the model is being procured from the IMD radars,' said Prof Ghosh. With the model installed at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Colaba, the system has already generated positive forecasts in its testing phase. Funded by HDFC Ergo, the IIT Bombay project is a collaboration between IMD and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The new forecast system is slated to be launched next week, with nowcast warnings set to be made public via the website portal. Launched last year, the portal presently provides hyperlocal forecasts for the next 24-48 hours while also furnishing past data for recorded rainfall and water level. Citizens can also report flooding in their area, with details pertaining to location, water levels as well as feedback. Currently, the Centre for Climate Studies at IIT Bombay is also working on developing a flood forecasting mechanism through flood modelling.

India's Edge Data Centre Capacity Set To Triple By 2027: Report

India's edge data centre industry is poised for exponential growth, with capacity projected to triple to 200-210 megawatts (MW) by 2027 from the current 60-70 MW, according to the latest report by credit rating agency ICRA. This surge is expected to be driven by the rapid adoption of emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), and generative artificial intelligence (AI). Edge data centres are smaller, decentralised facilities located closer to end-users and devices. Unlike traditional centralised data centres, which are typically large and centralised, edge facilities enable real-time data processing with minimal latency (the delay between a user action and the corresponding system response). This makes them ideal for supporting emerging technologies such as IoT, 5G, AR/VR, and GenAI. These new-age applications and technologies are forecasted to grow significantly in the medium term, resulting in an increased demand for edge data centres. Currently, edge data centres account for about 5% of India's total data centre capacity. However, when excluding capacity used for captive purposes by a major player, the share drops to as low as 1%. ICRA expects this figure to grow significantly, with edge data centres expected to make up 8% of the total capacity by 2027. P: Projected (Source: ICRA Research) 'Edge data centres differ from traditional data centres in multiple parameters like size, location, scale, time taken to construct, capex cost per MW, and proximity to the end user," said Anupama Reddy, vice-president and co-group head (corporate ratings) at ICRA. 'In the Indian context, traditional data centres and edge data centres are complementary pillars of digital infrastructure." Reddy said India's data infrastructure will increasingly adopt a 'hub-and-spoke' model. Traditional data centres will continue to support large-scale computing and AI workloads, while edge data centres will handle real-time, location-sensitive operations in sectors such as healthcare, banking, agriculture, Defence, and manufacturing. Globally, edge data centres are estimated to account for around 10% of the total data centre capacity, which stood at 50 gigawatts (GW) as of December 2024. The United States currently dominates the global edge data centre market with a 44% share, followed by the Europe-Middle East-Africa (EMEA) region at 32%, and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region at 24%. India remains a relatively new entrant but is expected to accelerate its adoption in the coming years. Despite a promising outlook, the growth of edge data centres is not without challenges. Security vulnerabilities are a concern due to their deployment in remote Tier II and Tier III cities. Moreover, a shortage of skilled professionals in these regions, rapid technological shifts that could render infrastructure obsolete, and interoperability issues with traditional data centres pose significant hurdles. 'Rentals for edge data centres are anticipated to be on the higher side compared to traditional data centres, as they cater primarily to retail customers, unlike traditional centres which serve enterprise and hyperscale clients," Reddy noted. 'The higher capital expenditure per MW for edge data centres is expected to be offset by these higher rentals."
