The Hindu22-06-2025
Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews has set his sights on the T20 World Cup next year, to be held in India and Sri Lanka, after calling time on his Test career.
Mathews' farewell Test match came to an end on Saturday at the Galle International Stadium—the same venue where he made his debut in the longest format in 2009—with host Sri Lanka settling for a draw with Bangladesh.
'I've still got six more months to go. I'll give it my best shot for the (2026) T20 World Cup.cI would love to sign off with a World Cup win. I'll just see how my body goes,' Mathews said in the post-match press conference.
'Ever since I announced my retirement, I just can't imagine the love that I have received up to now. It is so special because you feel as a player, once you give your 110% to the country, the amount of appreciation that you receive is unbelievable. It feels so special, very heartwarming and I'm so thankful to all of them,' he added.
Mathews ended his Test career as the third-highest run-getter in the format for Sri Lanka, with 8,214 runs in 119 matches at a healthy average of 44.40. He also picked 33 Test wickets with his medium pace.
Mathews was a part of the side which won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2014, beating India in the final, and is eyeing an encore.

Rugby-Owen Farrell called up after Daly ruled out of Lions tour with broken arm

By Nick Mulvenney Rugby-Owen Farrell called up after Daly ruled out of Lions tour with broken arm SYDNEY, - British & Irish Lions back Elliot Daly has been ruled out of the rest of the tour of Australia by a broken forearm and will be replaced in the squad by playmaker Owen Farrell, the son of head coach Andy. Versatile 32-year-old Daly, who was on his third Lions tour, suffered the injury in Wednesday's 52-12 victory over the Queensland Reds having been brought into the starting side just before kickoff when fullback Hugo Keenan fell ill. Daly's ability to cover the centre, wing and fullback makes him especially valuable on tour and his late call-up in Brisbane was his 11th straight inclusion in a Lions matchday squad going back to the start of the 2021 tour of South Africa. Farrell, who won the last of his 112 England caps at the 2023 World Cup and announced in early 2024 that he was stepping away from international rugby, will join the squad for his fourth Lions tour, looking to add to his six test caps. "It is heartbreaking for the group that Elliot's tour is over. He is a Lions legend who has added so much to the group on and off the field over the past few weeks," Andy Farrell said in a team statement. "Owen will now come in and add to our options and bring his own Lions experience to the group." Farrell named a third captain in three matches for the clash against the New South Wales Waratahs on Saturday with Irish lock Tadhg Beirne following tour skipper Maro Itoje and fellow-Irishman Dan Sheehan in leading the side out. Keenan will start at fullback with another option for the number 15 shirt, Blair Kinghorn, named on the left wing having arrived in Australia late on Monday after helping his French club Toulouse to the Top 14 title. Young English loose forward Henry Pollock returns to the side and will play at blindside flanker in a back row also featuring number eight Ben Earl and openside Josh van der Flier. Fin Smith, who started at flyhalf in the loss to Argentina in Dublin two weeks ago, gets another shot at the playmaking role in a halfback partnership with his England teammate Alex Mitchell. Lions team: 15–Hugo Keenan, 14–Mack Hansen, 13–Huw Jones, 12–Sione Tuipulotu, 11–Blair Kinghorn, 10–Fin Smith, 9–Alex Mitchell, 8–Ben Earl, 7–Josh van der Flier, 6–Henry Pollock, 5–James Ryan, 4–Tadhg Beirne , 3–Finlay Bealham, 2–Luke Cowan-Dickie, 1–Pierre Schoeman. Replacements: 16–Dan Sheehan, 17–Ellis Genge, 18–Tadhg Furlong, 19–Joe McCarthy, 20–Scott Cummings, 21–Jac Morgan, 22–Ben White, 23–Marcus Smith. India Eye Maiden Women's T20I Series Victory Over England

Riding a wave of momentum, India will look to secure their maiden women's T20I series triumph over England when they lock horns with the hosts in the third game of a five-match series on Friday. Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. have been in red-hot form, having handed England a record-shattering 97-run defeat in the series-opener before sealing a 24-run win in Bristol, England women's first-ever T20I loss at the venue, to take a commanding 2-0 lead. In 2006, India had beaten England in a lone match played in Derby. Since then, the Women in Blue have fallen short in every women's T20I series against England, both at home and away. This dominant performance comes as a timely boost for India as they continue to adapt to English conditions, a crucial exercise in the build-up to next year's ICC Women's T20 World Cup to be held in England. So far, the Indian unit has functioned like a well-oiled machine. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, who scored a century, and Harleen Deol were instrumental with the bat in the opener. In the second match, Amanjot Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues rescued the visitors from a precarious position with vital half-centuries, propelling India to a formidable total. However, the spotlight now turns to big-hitting opener Shafali Verma, who will be eager to make a statement. Back in the squad, Shafali has struggled to get going with scores of 20 and 3 in the series. She will be desperate for a defining innings. Skipper Kaur, who missed the opener as a precautionary measure following a head injury sustained during a warm-up match, will also look to spend some time in the middle after her two-ball stay in the second match. The Indian bowling attack has stepped up admirably in the absence of pace spearheads Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar. Left-arm spinner Sree Charani has emerged as the breakout star in her debut series. The 20-year-old leads the wicket charts with six scalps and also has the best economy rate in the series -- a frugal 5.11. For the hosts, one of main issues has been the inability of openers Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt-Hodge to provide a solid start. While Dunkley has enjoyed some good beginnings, Wyatt-Hodge has made a total of 18 runs across five innings this summer, including three successive ducks. Their bowling too has been sub par. Squads: ====== India: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Yastika Bhatia (wk), Harleen Deol, Richa Ghosh (wk), Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Amanjot Kaur, Sneh Rana, Sayali Satghare, Deepti Sharma, Kranti Goud, Arundhati Reddy, Shree Charani, Radha Yadav. England: Natalie Sciver-Brunt (c), Tammy Beaumont (wk), Sophia Dunkley, Amy Jones (wk), Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Paige Scholfield, Em Arlott, Lauren Bell, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Linsey Smith, Issy Wong. Match starts at 11:05pm IST.
