Former Texas A&M safety is headed to Auburn after a year in the transfer portal
Texas A&M's historic 2022 recruiting class has all but dissipated, and while nearly all of the 20-plus players in the cycle have found new homes or have moved on to the NFL or another line of work, former starting safety and four-star Louisiana prospect Jacoby Matthews has been in the transfer portal for over a year, but has reportedly finally found his next playing destination. According to Auburn On3 recruiting insider Jeffrey Lee, Mathews is headed to join the Auburn Tigers for the 2025 season, bringing the length, speed, and defensive instincts that earned him the starting free safety job during the 2023 season, when he finished with 42 tackles, an interception, and four pass deflections. After former head coach Jimbo Fisher was dismissed from the program at the end of the 2023 season, Mathews, who had a chance to retain his starting role under Mike Elko, chose to go in a different direction due to the defensive schematic changes. Standing at 6'2" and over 200 pounds, Mathews has a chance to make an impact next season with the Tigers in the secondary, given the youth, as a redshirt sophomore, Sylvester Smith is slated to start at free safety, but that could now change with Mathews in the fold. After not playing last season, Mathews will need to get back up to speed and will likely work his way into the safety rotation. Either way, the potential is there, and Auburn should have one of the more stout SEC defences this fall. Mathews bows out
Former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews ended his 119-test career with a draw against Bangladesh in Galle yesterday. Set an unlikely 296 from 37 overs to win on the final day, Sri Lanka never made an attempt on the target, but did give Bangladesh some cause for hope, slumping to 48 for 4 at one stage before batting out the remainder of the day. Mathews helped his side secure the draw on his last day in test cricket with a stonewalling 8 from 45 balls. Debuting in tests in 2009, he led his country in 34 of his tests and finished with 8214 runs at an average 44.4, scoring 16 hundreds and 45 fifties, also picking up 33 wickets with his part-time medium pacers. In 2018 in Wellington he memorably batted all of day four in partnership with Kusal Mendis against a Black Caps attack containing Neil Wagner, Tim Southee and Trent Boult to deny New Zealand a test win. — APL

Mathews bids farewell to Tests, eyes T20 World Cup glory
Galle, June 22 (UNI) Former Sri Lankan skipper, Angelo Mathews made his final appearance in royal whites against Bangladesh here, the same venue he made his debut in 2009. Mathews is the second-highest run scorer at the venue with 2253 runs in 34 Test matches. While speaking in the post-match press conference on Saturday, he spoke on the draw against Bangladesh, his final appearance in the red-ball format for Sri Lanka. 'Once you get a 400 in the first innings, it's really difficult to lose a game. So we had to bat really well in our first innings as well," he said. 'I thought we scrapped our way through and to minimize the lead. And also in the second innings, Shanto batted brilliantly,' Mathews said. Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 148 and 125 not out in both the innings as he led from the front and secured himself the Player of the Match award, an ICC report said. 'It was a tough wicket for the bowlers, to be honest. There were times where it turned a little bit but didn't really have anything for the bowlers,' Mathews said, speaking on the wicket and opportunities for the bowlers. 'We could have pushed for a win, but unfortunately, we couldn't,' he said. While Mathews stepped away from the longest format, he spoke on his World Cup aspirations in the shorter formats of the game. 'I've still got six more months to go. I'll give it my best shot for the (2026) T20 World Cup,' he said. 'I would love to sign off with a World Cup win. I'll just see how my body goes,' Mathews said. Mathews was a part of the side which won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2014, beating India in the final.
