'Hours at a Time:' Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Driver Says He Loves His Car. Except for This One Thing
The Toyota RAV4 is one of the automaker's top sellers. But one driver says these hybrids have a quirk that consistently causes him issues.

But as gas prices have climbed, people have become more climate aware. Simultaneously, hybrids have improved. Today, they're more popular than ever.
In the first quarter, hybrids made up about 14 percent of all light-duty vehicles sold in the United States, according to the Department of Energy. That's about three times the market share of fully electric vehicles sold in the same timeframe.
They're
more fuel efficient
than a gasoline or diesel engine, and you don't have to deal with charging like with a fully electric car. Plus, many agree that now they look as good as any other car.
The One 'Problem' With Hybrids
In a video with more than 27,000 views, fitness influencer and
Toyota RAV4
hybrid owner Casey Casano shares his one problem with the vehicle: It's too quiet.
'Nobody tells you when you get a hybrid that you will leave your car on for hours at a time before you even realize that you turned your car off,' Casano says in his TikTok.
In the video, Casano said he ends up forgetting to turn it off because it's 'so quiet' that he can barely tell the difference between it on and off. The only time it emits a noticeable sound, he says, is when it's charging.
Still, he says, 'I love having a hybrid. I get like 40 miles to the gallon. No complaints over here.'
At this rate, he says he's surprised the vehicle hasn't been stolen.
Efforts to Address the Issue
Hybrids and electric vehicles being too quiet is a widely reported issue. Both lawmakers and automakers have worked to address it over the years.

reported in 2019 that a lot of RAV4 drivers were unable to hear a distinct difference when the vehicle was on versus off.
A too-quiet vehicle may be an inconvenience for drivers like Casano, but for
pedestrians and animals
, the lack of sound is a potentially lethal hazard. That's why federal regulators have
implemented
minimum sound requirements for these vehicles.
These
requirements
apply when the vehicle is in motion, however, so an idling RAV4 would be harder to hear than one that's being driven.
Carmakers have separately worked to ensure drivers don't unintentionally leave their vehicles running when they exit.
Toyota has had 'engine on' warnings since 2003, per
WRAL TechWire
. In recent years, the company has added enhanced features to make the warning more noticeable and send an alert to your phone. RAV4s also automatically shift into park when they're turned off.
People across several forums also say that the RAV4 automatically shuts off if it's idle for an hour.
'My Car Screams at Me'
People who commented on Casano's post almost universally disagreed with him.
One did say, 'Yup have done that.'
But the vast majority, most of whom claim they drive hybrids, said their vehicles have warning systems and other features that prevent them from leaving it on for any length of time.
'Nah, my hybrid won't let that happen. It will annoy you if you try to get out with it on or running idle too long,' one person wrote.
'My car screams at me if I step out with the key and it's on,' another said.
A third both agreed and disagreed, writing, 'Mine will turn off after one hour. But yes I forget it's on.'

The New Nissan Patrol Nismo Has More Power Than America's Armada
Nissan has been selling a Patrol Nismo in the Middle East for a decade, but only now is the United States getting an equivalent: the Armada Nismo . It answers a question few have asked, as it's hard to imagine people lining up to place deposits for a high-performance version of Nissan's largest SUV. Nevertheless, we appreciate the added variety, even if Americans will have to settle for less power. The hot Nismo boasts 460 horsepower, or 35 more than the regular Armada, but the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 is even more potent in the Middle East. Exclusive to the United Arab Emirates and other countries where the Armada is sold as the Patrol, the 'VR35DDTT' engine produces 495 hp, a solid 35-hp bump attributed to 'region-specific tuning.' Marketing fluff aside, we're pretty confident U.S. buyers would've liked the 495-hp version as well. More lenient emissions regulations in the Middle East likely enabled engineers to unlock the extra power. We've asked Nissan for clarification and will update the article once we receive a response. In the meantime, torque remains unchanged at 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) for both the Patrol and Armada variants. Beyond the stronger engine, the Patrol Nismo also features a fog lamp as a nod to the previous-generation model . Nissan says Formula E inspired the design, but the U.S.-spec Armada Nismo opts for a cleaner rear diffuser instead. Aside from badging, since the SUV goes by different names depending on the market, everything else is essentially the same. The Armada isn't the only SUV to get the Nismo treatment. There was a Juke Nismo several years ago, and now Nissan offers the Ariya Nismo as the first model without a combustion engine. We're hopeful the GT-R will return someday with a Nismo version, but Godzilla is unlikely to make a comeback anytime soon. When it does, it too might arrive as an EV, especially considering the wild Hyper Force concept . Audi Is Dead Last In New Initial Quality Study
It's that time of the year when J.D. Power releases its U.S. Initial Quality Study . Now in its 39 th edition, the survey collected feedback from 92,694 purchasers and lessees of 2025 model year vehicles, asking whether they encountered any problems during the first 90 days of ownership. Those who agreed to participate in the study between June 2024 and May 2025 answered 227 questions covering various aspects, including the engine, infotainment system, interior quality, and driving experience. While reliability isn't typically a strong suit for luxury brands, Lexus topped the rankings with 166 problems reported per 100 vehicles. In contrast, other premium automakers performed significantly worse, especially Audi, which ranked dead last with 269 issues. Power There's a striking discrepancy between Nissan and Infiniti. The mainstream brand placed second overall with just 169 reported problems, while its upscale counterpart ranked near the bottom with 242 issues during the first three months of ownership. This year's average was 192 problems per 100 vehicles, a slight improvement from last year's 194. Many luxury automakers performed below average, with exceptions including Nissan (1st), Jaguar (4th), Buick (9th), Genesis (10th), and Porsche (13th). Only one brand had more problems per 100 vehicles than Audi: Rivian, with 269 issues. However, the American EV startup didn't meet the study's award criteria and was excluded from the final rankings. The same applies to Tesla, which tied with Cadillac and Toyota, reporting 200 problems. Seeing Toyota well below the average is quite surprising. It's also a bit of a shock to see Mazda rank so low with 225 issues, on par with Volkswagen. Then again, the study only covers the first 90 days of ownership, not long-term reliability. For those seeking dependable vehicles, J.D. Power notes that luxury cars are generally more prone to problems than mainstream ones. Plug-in hybrids tend to cause more headaches than EVs, and brand-new models typically have more issues than their predecessors. The study isn't solely focused on reliability, since it also accounts for other types of issues reported by owners. For instance, J.D. Power highlights growing frustration with touchscreen-based climate controls, which many drivers find unintuitive. Shocker, right? Power consistently ranked the German luxury brand near the bottom. That said, there was usually at least one other automaker with more problems: Land Rover in 2020, Chrysler in 2021, and Maserati, Volvo, and Chrysler in 2022. In 2023, VW, Chrysler, and Volvo all ranked below Audi. Last year, Dodge was in last place. To Audi's credit, the company has acknowledged its shortcomings, at least those related to interior quality . In a recent interview with Motor1 , Oscar da Silva Martins, Head of Product and Technology Communication, admitted: 'We have certainly been better in terms of quality in the past, but we will get there again.' Whether the new Q3's unified stalk behind the steering wheel is part of the solution is unclear.
