Harimau Malaya drawn with Iran in Cafa Nations Cup
KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia have been drawn in Group B alongside world No 18 Iran for next month's Central Asian Football Association (Cafa) Nations Cup 2025.
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) said that Harimau Malaya, ranked 131st in the world, will also face hosts Tajikistan (ranked 104th in the world) and Afghanistan (160th).
Malaysia will open their campaign against Tajikistan on Aug 29, followed by Iran on Sept 1 and Afghanistan on Sept 4, with all three matches taking place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Group A will take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, featuring four other teams — hosts Uzbekistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan and Oman.
Only the winner of each group will qualify for the final in Tashkent on Sept 8, while the runners-up will play for third place in Dushanbe on the same date.
After the tournament, Malaysia will continue their remaining 2027 Asian Cup Group F qualifiers against Laos in Vientiane on Oct 9 and Kuala Lumpur on Oct 14, before meeting Nepal in Kathmandu on Nov 18 and Vietnam away in March next year.

Cklamovski: Iran clash a benchmark for Harimau Malaya
KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya coach Peter Cklamovski is relishing the chance to pit his side against World Cup-bound Iran at the CAFA Nations Cup. He views the showdown as a true benchmark for Malaysia's progress. World No. 131 Malaysia have been drawn in a tough Group B with Iran (world No. 18), hosts Tajikistan (104) and Afghanistan (160). The tournament runs from Aug 29 to Sept 8 and Group B matches will be played in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. "It's a massive challenge for us, a massive opportunity," said Cklamovski, who will take charge of his first challenge outside Malaysian soil. "They're going to a World Cup. We'll use it to benchmark ourselves against the best, test our football against them, and take our football to them as hard as we can." Cklamovski has enjoyed a strong start to his reign, overseeing two impressive home wins in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers - a 2-0 win over Nepal in Johor and a 4-0 thumping of Vietnam in Bukit Jalil. But the real test begins away from home. Malaysia open their campaign against hosts Tajikistan on Aug 29 in what the Australian coach expects to be a fiery encounter. "It'll be a hostile environment. I'm sure the atmosphere will be electric and a really good test for us," he said. The showdown with tournament favourites and defending champions Iran comes next on Sept 1, followed by Afghanistan on Sept 4. Only the top team in each group qualifies for the final in Tashkent on Sept 8, with the second-placed sides meeting in a third-place playoff in Dushanbe the same day. Group A, played in Tashkent, features hosts Uzbekistan (world No. 57), Oman (77), Kyrgyzstan (103), and Turkmenistan (142). Cklamovski believes the CAFA Nations Cup provides ideal preparation for Malaysia's next Asian Cup qualifying challenge - a crucial away-and-home double header against Laos in October. "We're in a challenging CAFA group , and that's exactly what we want," he said. "We want to test ourselves against well-respected opponents. That's how we grow, evolve, and keep pushing towards the team we dream to be." With quick turnarounds and matches on foreign soil, the tournament offers the kind of high-pressure conditions Harimau Malaya must master if they are to take the next step. "We want to go into the group stage with the belief we can do something special," he added.

Diogo Jota: Liverpool's ‘exceptional player, exceptional boy'
Fans lay shirts, scarves and flowers at Anfield in tribute to Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Spain. (EPA Images pic) LIVERPOOL : Diogo Jota was quickly hailed by the Liverpool support as 'better than (Luis) Figo' and the shocking death of the Portuguese international on Thursday has left the English champions in mourning. The 28-year-old died alongside his younger brother Andre after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northern Spain before bursting into flames. A product of the Pacos de Ferreira academy on the outskirts of his native Porto, Jota made his name and played the majority of his professional career in the Premier League. His precocious talent caught the eye of Atletico Madrid who snapped him up in 2016 but he never played a game for the Spanish giants. Instead, after a loan spell at Porto, Jota was among the first wave of Portuguese talent parachuted into England at then second-tier Wolves due to the club's connections with super-agent Jorge Mendes. Jota's goals helped fire Wolves from the Championship to the quarter-finals of the Europa League in just three seasons. That caught the eye of Liverpool, who splashed out a £45 million (US$62 million) transfer fee for the versatile forward even in the midst of the economic meltdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. 'Exceptional player, exceptional boy,' said former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp during Jota's early days at Anfield. 'He has everything that a Liverpool player in this squad needs.' Jota took little time to deliver some return on Liverpool's investment, becoming the first player in the club's history to score in his first four home games. Once supporters were back in the stands after the pandemic, Jota's popularity was reflected in a chant proclaiming him to be better than Portugal legend Figo, who played for Real Madrid and Barcelona during his decorated career. He was a key part of the side that won the League Cup and FA Cup in 2021/22, narrowly missing out on the Premier League and Champions League for what would have been an unprecedented quadruple. 'He will never be forgotten' In total, Jota struck 65 times in 182 appearances for the Reds, the last of which won the Merseyside derby against Everton in April to edge Liverpool ever closer to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. 'Hard work, desire, commitment, great quality, goals. The essence of what a Liverpool player should be,' said Liverpool boss Arne Slot. 'There were also the parts that not everyone got to see. The person who never sought popularity but found it anyway. Not a friend to two people, a friend to everyone.' But not for the first time in Liverpool's rich history, tragedy has struck to overshadow triumph. Jota's last public act as a player on Merseyside was taking part in the trophy parade through the city, which will be remembered for a car ploughing into the crowds, injuring 109 people. Fans laid hundreds of shirts, scarves and flowers in tribute at Anfield. Cristiano Ronaldo was among those to express his disbelief that his international team-mate has passed. 'It makes no sense,' the five-time Ballon d'Or winner posted on social media. 'Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.' Ronaldo and Jota, who won 49 caps for his country, had been part of the Portugal team that won the Nations League last month. Jota then wed his long-time partner and mother of his three children, Rute Cardoso, less than two weeks ago. 'Diogo was a not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father,' added Klopp. Off the field, Jota was well-known for his passion for video games and even had his own esports team Luna Esports. 'When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo Jota, we will remember his goals and we will sing his song,' added Slot. 'For the time being, we will remember him as a unique human being and mourn his loss. He will never be forgotten.'

MFL to improve VAR for new season after controversial debut
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Football League (MFL) have said improvements will be made for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for use in the upcoming Malaysia League 2025-2026 season after several controversial incidents during its introduction last season. Acting MFL chief executive officer Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd said two special briefings regarding the improvement of the system were conducted by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) together with representatives of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the International Football Federation (FIFA). According to him, this is a step to improve the quality of refereeing ahead of the new season starting in August. 'The improvements are not yet in place, but we are aware of it (the issue) because last year was the first time VAR was implemented. 'So from the issues we identified last year, we will improve it for the new season,' he said recently. Last year, FAM referees committee chairman Datuk S. Sivasundaram said the performance of the referees and the implementation of VAR were rated as excellent, with an average of 0.57 'On-field Review' (OFR) per match and an average of 2.27 minutes of added time used for VAR reviews. However, several errors sparked criticism, including after referee Razlan Joffri Ali and a VAR official were suspended for two matches after the Super League match between Perak and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). Razlan, however, came in for high praise for his excellent refereeing in the 2024-2025 Malaysia Cup final between JDT and Pahang, which the Southern Tigers won 2-1. Shazli said the MFL are also now on the right track to ensure that the new season runs smoothly and is free from scheduling delays like those that occurred last season. Therefore, according to him, the full schedule of the new M-League season will be announced after several important elements, such as the Shopee Cup draw and Asian Champions League (ACL), are finalised. — Bernama
