A Delhi resident, Ritesh Gandotra, recently had to part ways with his luxury Range Rover SUV–not by choice, but because of the National Capital Region's strict enforcement of the 10-year diesel vehicle ban. Gandotra, who bought the high-end car in 2018 for Rs 55 lakh, said it had been 'meticulously maintained,' and had just 74,000 km on the odometer. The SUV had also spent nearly two years idle during the Covid-19 pandemic-induced lockdowns, meaning it still had plenty of life left in it. 'Easily over two lakh km,' he claimed. But under Delhi's current End-of-Life (EoL) policy, diesel vehicles older than ten years must be deregistered–regardless of condition. That left Gandotra with no option but to sell it outside the NCR at what he called 'throwaway prices.' He voiced his frustration on X, writing: 'This isn't a green policy. Several users on social media weighed in, echoing his concerns. One user commented, 'The government's rule is very wrong. No matter how old a vehicle gets, if the maintenance is proper, it can run for 50 years.' Another pointed to the financial hit car owners take under this policy, saying, 'Selling an old but well-maintained car and paying a hefty tax on a new one — this is the irony of Delhi-NCR's diesel policy.' Others brought up broader urban planning issues. 'If you really want to make Delhi clean and pollution-free, build a system where people don't need a personal vehicle,' one user suggested. 'Just imagine Delhi without the Metro — we'd be suffocating under traffic and pollution.'

These are the words of eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, who expressed his excitement during the launch of festivities at Weston Square and The Barn, the city's newly developed lifestyle and retail hub touted as the region's "Midrand", strategically situated between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse will be the epicentre of this prestigious horse racing event taking place on Saturday, drawing close to 45 000 local and international visitors. This influx is expected to result in a significant boost for the local economy, with hotel occupancy anticipated to reach 80% over the event weekend. Xaba addressed local media and dignitaries, including the Chairperson of Economic Development and Planning, Thembo Ntuli, and marketing leaders from Hollywoodbets and Gold Circle Racing. He enthusiastically declared, 'Whether you are a horse racing enthusiast or fashionista, the Durban July is an event you cannot miss. It remains the greatest horseracing event on the continent.' Durban has faced numerous challenges in the past, including the July 2021 unrest, the floods in April 2022, the Covid pandemic and not participating in Blue Flag beach status ratings in 2023, resulting in tourism being impacted. 'As part of reviving tourism in the city, I will be meeting key role players in the tourism industry, including the hospitality sector, so that together we can develop a common programme for enhancing visitors' experiences in the city. "This will also assist us in gaining insight into their future development plans and ensure that we are aligned,' he said. New boss appointed to run EICC
A new Chief Executive has been appointed at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) from existing staff. Amanda Wrathall has been Sales and Marketing Director at EICC for more than ten years and has won many accolades in that time. She will now take up the role in 1 August. Marshall Dallas the former CEO who announced earlier in the year that he was stepping down earned around £200,000 with bonus, but the salary details for the new CEO have not yet been confirmed. Cllr Lezley Marion Cameron, Chair of the EICC Board, said: 'I am delighted to announce Amanda Wrathall's appointment as our new EICC Chief Executive. 'As EICC Sales and Marketing Director, Amanda has consistently demonstrated her ability to lead, transform and inspire teams and succeed in partnership working. Amanda's lead role in the EICC's successful temporary guardianship of the Edinburgh Convention Bureau is a great example. Her high standing in local and national hospitality and tourism industry and government networks is another. 'Since the EICC first opened in 1995, the international conference and events landscape has become more competitive, fast changing and challenging. 'Today, EICC's priorities include being equipped to compete successfully in an increasingly competitive market; exploring new opportunities for innovation and benefits arising from the Edinburgh Tourism Visitor Levy coming into effect; and responding to anticipated outcomes of the Council's review of its Arms-Length Companies, due to conclude this year. 'With Amanda as our new CEO, the EICC Board is looking forward with confidence to embracing a new and exciting era for the EICC, defined by mutually respectful and collaborative ways of working designed to sustain, secure and strengthen EICC's reputation as a global conference and events destination of excellence.' Owned by the City of Edinburgh Council, the EICC has hosted over 4,500 events since 1995, welcoming over 2.2 million delegates and bringing in an economic impact worth £930 million to the local economy.
