England becomes first reigning champion to lose a Women's Euro opener
Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore scored two quickfire goals towards the end of the first half as France recorded a ninth straight win and stunned the defending champion.
Keira Walsh reduced the deficit three minutes from time but it wasn't enough to prevent England from becoming the first titleholder to lose its opening match at a women's Euros.
It also ended England coach Sarina Wiegman's remarkable flawless record in the competition, after winning 12 out of 12 matches across two tournaments as she steered first the Netherlands to the title and then England.
The Lionesses next face the Netherlands on Wednesday, before taking on Wales in their final group match four days later.
The Netherlands beat Wales 3-0 in the early match in Group D.
France was without injured captain Griedge Mbock, while England welcomed back Lauren James with the midfielder starting her first match since a hamstring injury at the start of April.
James almost gave England the lead within 40 seconds with a clever run into the box but fired narrowly over.
Alessia Russo thought she gave England the lead in the 16th minute, turning in the rebound after Lauren Hemp's shot was saved but it was ruled out for a tight offside decision on Beth Mead in the buildup.
France grew in ascendancy after that. Sakina Karchaoui almost scored what would have been one of the goals of the tournament as she lobbed Hannah Hampton but the ball landed in the side-netting.
Hampton also had to make a couple of fine stops before France broke the deadlock in the 36th. Elise De Almeida won the ball in her own half before surging down the right and threading the ball through to Delphine Cascarino, who put in a low cross for Katoto to tap in at the back post.

France doubled its lead just three minutes later. Baltimore mazed her way into the area, close to the byline, and Lucy Bronze inadvertently kept the ball in play with her attempted tackle, allowing the Chelsea forward to curl into the far side of the net.
France was almost out of sight at the start of the second half, with Hampton having to scramble behind her and grab the ball before it crossed the line, after fumbling an effort from Grace Geyoro.
England hadn't even had a shot on target before it got back into the game late on. A corner was cleared only to the edge of the area for Walsh to calmly control before firing into the top right corner for only her second international goal.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw appreciates his 11th career All-Star Game selection while acknowledging this one's a little different from the rest. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has made only nine starts this season but still got selected to the National League team as a Legend Pick by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, under a provision in the collective bargaining agreement. 'You never take for granted getting to go to an All-Star Game, regardless of the circumstances,' Kershaw said Monday before the Dodgers played the Milwaukee Brewers. 'Obviously, I don't deserve to get to go this season. I haven't pitched very much.' This marked the first time Manfred made a Legend Pick for the All-Star Game since 2022, when Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols both received that designation. 'I didn't really actually know that was a thing,' Kershaw said. 'At the end of the day, it's weird, but it's cool, so I'm just going to enjoy it.' The honor comes less than a week after Kershaw recorded his 3,000th career strikeout, becoming just the 20th pitcher to reach that plateau. He's in his 18th season with the Dodgers, tying Hall of Fame outfielder Zack Wheat and shortstop Bill Russell for the franchise record. New York Knicks hire Mike Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Knicks hired Mike Brown on Monday, turning to the two-time NBA Coach of the Year after firing Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks offered the job to Brown last week and announced Monday that he would be taking over the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 25 years. They decided to fire Thibodeau despite that and eventually picked Brown, who wasn't out of work long after getting fired by the Sacramento Kings during last season. Brown had led the Kings to the postseason in 2023 — their first appearance since 2006 — and was voted the Coach of the Year. Arizona State QB Leavitt and Texas Tech LB Rodriguez are preseason Big 12 players of year
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt and Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez were named the preseason Big 12 Conference players of the year on Monday. The Big 12 announced the awards, which are determined by a vote of media members who cover the league, the day before the Big 12 Football Media Days started in Frisco, Texas. There was no preseason poll since the Big 12 discontinued that this year, joining the Big Ten as power conferences without one. The Big 12's move comes a year after then-newcomer Arizona State was picked to finish last in the 16-team league before going on to win the conference championship game. Leavitt completed 216 of 350 passes (61.7%) for 2,885 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions as a redshirt freshman last season when the Sun Devils made the 12-team College Football Playoff in their Big 12 debut. The former Michigan State transfer also ran for 443 yards and five TDs. Rodriguez was the Big 12's leading tackler with 126 total tackles, and his 77 solo stops were also the most in the league. He had 7 1/2 tackles for loss, and all five of his sacks came in Big 12 play. Utah quarterback Devon Dampier, a transfer from New Mexico, was selected as the Big 12's top newcomer.
