RHP Jesse Chavez announces retirement after 18 seasons
After 657 appearances over 18 seasons with nine different clubs, right-hander Jesse Chavez announced his retirement Thursday.
The final appearance for the 41-year-old came July 13 for the Atlanta Braves against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Chavez was traded 11 times in his career, the most of any player in MLB history.
'As of now, I don't think we're going to keep going,' Chavez said on Foul Territory. 'Time to turn the page and focus on the next chapter of life, and go help all the young kids so they don't have to take two steps back to take three steps forward.'
Chavez went 51-66 with a 4.27 ERA during his career and had nine saves with 1,044 strikeouts in 1,142 innings. The Los Angeles-area native started his career in 2008 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and also pitched for the Braves, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs.
He pitched in four games for the Braves this season, when he went 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in eight innings. Chavez first pitched for the Braves in 2010 and then returned to the organization in 2021, when he won his only World Series ring. He had three separate stints with Atlanta this season alone.
'This has been a great ride and way more than I ever expected from a 42nd-round draft pick,' Chavez said. 'I was given a gift early on, I understood but it was, 'How am I going to make it last?''

Report: Las Vegas to host 2026 FIFA World Cup Draw

Sources told the outlet that the date of the draw would be Friday, Dec. 5 and that Las Vegas was selected over cities in Canada and Mexico. FIFA officials have not confirmed the date or site. For the first time, the competition will take place in three countries and will feature 48 nations, as opposed to the traditional 32. Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium was rejected as a host venue. Eleven United States cities/venues were selected, along with three in Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey) and two in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver). The U.S. sites are divided into three regions. New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami and Atlanta are a part of the Eastern region, Kansas City, Dallas and Houston comprise a part of the Central Region, while Los Angeles, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay area make up three of the four cities in the Western Region. The draw will reveal the dozen groups with four nations per group. Mexico (Group A), Canada (Group B) and the United States (Group D) have already been selected for their groups. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., will host the final match on July 19, 2026. Las Vegas hosted the draw in 1994, the last time the World Cup was held in the United States. The modern Sphere, which has a seating capacity of over 17,000 is the front-running venue to host the evening, according to sources.

Blue Jays trade for O's RHP Seranthony Dominguez

The Orioles received right-handed pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown to complete the trade. Dominguez, 30, last pitched Sunday, when the Orioles defeated the visiting Colorado Rockies 5-1. He did not appear in the first game of Tuesday's twin bill, a 16-4 Baltimore rout of Toronto. The Blue Jays are in first place in the American League East and made the deal with their division rival for an experienced bullpen arm. In 298 career games with the Philadelphia Phillies (2018-24) and Orioles (2024-25), Dominguez has gone 21-22 with 40 saves, a 3.54 ERA and 335 strikeouts across 285 innings. He did not play in 2020 due to injury. In 2025, Dominguez has gone 2-3 with two saves and a 3.24 ERA in 43 appearances for the Orioles. He's struck out 54 batters for a rate of 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings. Watts-Brown, 23, has split this season between Double-A New Hampshire and High-A Vancouver. He has gone 2-5 with a 3.54 ERA in 19 starts. MLB Pipeline ranked Watts-Brown as Toronto's No. 10 prospect.

Jasmine Paolini, Leylah Fernandez bow out in Montreal

Ito, ranked No. 110 in the world, was down a set and a break before charging back to upset Paolini 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) in second-round action. Ito trailed 4-1 in the second set before coming back to tie the score; she saved one match point in the 10th game on her way to forcing the third set. Ito controlled most of the third set before Paolini forced the tiebreaker. The Italian held several one-point leads in the back-and-forth tiebreaker but Ito came back from down 5-4 to record the final three points of the match. Ito, 21, had not won a tour-level match all season until beating Katie Volynets in the first round Sunday. That made it even more shocking that she could oust Paolini, who already has two WTA 1000 titles under her belt this year in Qatar and Italy. Ito won despite committing 11 double faults. She converted 7 of 10 break points against Paolini while saving 11 of the 19 break points she faced. As for Fernandez, she never held a lead in a 6-4, 6-1 first-round defeat to Australian Maya Joint. Fernandez had beaten Joint in the first round of last week's WTA 500 event in Washington, D.C., where the Canadian went on to capture the biggest title of her career. It was not a banner day for the Canadian contingent. No. 8 seed Emma Navarro breezed past Canada's Rebecca Marino 6-1, 6-2 in 63 minutes. Bianca Andreescu, meanwhile, withdrew due to a foot injury, allowing a walkover for fourth seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia. The Ontario native was the 2019 Canadian Open and U.S. Open champion. In another first-round match, Caty McNally battled past fellow American Alycia Parks 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7).
