Fenway Park Workers Give Aramark 48-Hour Strike Deadline
Unite Here Local 26 has given food and beverage provider Aramark until 12 p.m. ET on Friday to offer the stadium's hospitality staffers a new contract. Should Aramark miss the deadline, the unionized workers will walk off the job during the three-game set this weekend.

Fenway Park Concession Workers Approve Strike in 113-Year First
The union, which represents concession employees at the stadium as well as other hospitality workers throughout Boston, on June 15 authorized a strike that could be called at any point during the MLB season. At the time, Aramark said it had contingency plans in place should the normal staffers walk off the job.
The Red Sox forwarded a request for comment to Aramark, which said it intends 'to keep working with the union toward a settlement that works for everyone. In the event of a strike, we have contingency plans in place to ensure that services are not interrupted.'
The most recent bargaining talks took place last Tuesday, though the two sides remain far apart on key issues.
In addition to a desire for higher wages, one of the biggest worries for Local 26 is the use of self-service machines that Aramark implemented at Fenway back in 2023. Aramark installed six machines created by Mashgin—two self-checkout units that dispense beer and four self-checkout popcorn stations. Employees are concerned that the machines could make them expendable by minimizing the human interaction they say adds to the experience of making Fenway 'America's most beloved ballpark.'
Mashgin's machines are deployed at 20 of the 30 MLB ballparks in addition to at least 120 more sports venues, at least 100 hospitals and more than 3,000 convenience stores. In April, the company said that during the 2024 season, it 'delivered a median transaction time of under 15 seconds across over 3.6 million transactions and $88 million in concession sales.'
In a union Zoom call with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) last week, the former presidential candidate highlighted that interaction when talking about a visit to Fenway last year when the Red Sox were taking on the Dodgers. He followed up that Zoom invite with a scathing letter to Aramark CEO John J. Zillmer and Red Sox owner John Henry, calling out the valuations of both the company and team and expressing concern over the AI-powered self-checkout units.
'If Aramark can afford to pay you $18.7 million in compensation and provide nearly $100 million in dividends for your wealthy shareholders,' the senator wrote to Zillmer, 'it can afford to pay all of your workers a living wage and not threaten to take away their jobs and their income with faceless Mashgin touchscreen computers.'
Sanders cited the team's valuation, saying that it has gone up by over $4 billion since Henry bought the team in 2002 for $380 million. The Red Sox rank third in Sportico's MLB franchise valuations at $6.03 billion, with a $5.22 billion valuation for the team itself and $810 million for team-related business and real estate, including Fenway Park.
Local 26 also appealed to Henry in an open letter emailed to Fenway Sports Group, the Red Sox's holding company, on Tuesday evening, asking for him and leadership at FSG to intervene. 'Mr. Henry, Fenway Park is your house,' the letter said. 'We're asking you … to intervene. We're asking you to tell Aramark to bring reasonable proposals to the table that recognize our value and our role in making Fenway thrive.'
Because concession work at Fenway is seasonal, the union said a sustained indefinite strike would have presented too many obstacles for members who are part-time workers at the ballpark. There are no definitive dates for the next potential strike if union members are off for the full Dodgers series.
The Red Sox have a scheduled off day on Thursday before the Dodgers series opens on Friday. The team will be on the road for a three-game set in Minnesota before opening the month of August with a six-game homestand against Houston and Kansas City.

WWE SummerSlam Night 1 set the bar incredibly high before WWE returns to MetLife Stadium on Sunday for Night 2 in New Jersey. CM Punk bloodied Gunther, Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase, and Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss cemented their unlikely friendship to become Women's Tag Team Champions in what was a transformational night across the WWE landscape. Before we jump head-first into the second night of SummerSlam, here's the Night 1 takeaways from New Jersey. 1. Seth Rollins shocks the world At WrestleMania 40, as Drew McIntyre celebrated defeating Seth Rollins to win the World Heavyweight title in CM Punk's face, Punk pulled McIntyre's legs out from under him. The move ultimately cost McIntyre the championship, opening the door for Damian Priest to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase to win the belt. In a wild ending to Saturday night's main event, Punk pulled almost the same maneuver to swing the tide in his match against Gunther, busting "The Ring General" open on the announcer's desk and landing two GTS finishers to claim his first WWE World Heavyweight Championship in more than a decade. The sequencing may have been different, but how appropriate was it for Rollins to be the one that cashed in, stunning the world a month after he appeared to suffer a serious knee injury? Rollins playing off an injury as part of the show feels like an intentional blurring of the lines between what's real and what's a work. What is unquestioned is Rollins didn't use or need the help of Bronson Reed or Bron Breakker to cash in his briefcase. He did it himself, and he's set the path for Punk to chase the belt the rest of the summer in a rivalry that feels destined for a WrestleMania main event. 2. Pairing two top stars in the tag-team division is a formula that works It worked for Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill, it worked for Belair and Naomi, and it's working for Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss. Absent a program at the top of the card, or when WWE is invested in developing some of its younger stars, the tag-team division is a perfect spot for a couple of veterans to try something new. Between her emotional Players Tribune article and her partnership with Bliss, it's an opportunity to view Flair as a different character than how she's been portrayed over the past decade. She's an equal with Bliss and it's a wonderful change of pace to cheer the unlikely duo now as tag-team champions. From a storyline perspective, the Judgement Day fallout when Liv Morgan returns will be delightful. Roxanne Perez has played the part of Morgan's replacement well until now, flexing between supporting Dominik Mysterio to joining Raquel Rodriguez in a tag team. Morgan returning to her group sans the Women's Tag Team championships and seeing how Perez has positioned herself with Mysterio is a story that writes itself. 3. Jade Cargill awaits her night From Jade Cargill's return at the Elimination Chamber to her win at WrestleMania 41 and eventually winning Queen of the Ring, it felt like everything was in motion for her to claim her first major singles championship. The matchup set for her complicated things, with Tiffany Stratton also on a course to continue proving herself as a fighting champion and a permanent member of the upper echelon of the roster. Stratton fended off Charlotte Flair in a title defense at WrestleMania and was coming off a win against Trish Stratus at Evolution, so it wasn't out of the question for her to retain. Something had to give on Saturday night at SummerSlam, and Cargill's superstar entrance set the stage for an assumed changing of the guard for who would hold the WWE Women's Championship. Instead, it was Stratton, in a legit surprise, coming out on top with a clean finish. How much of Saturday's result was about keeping momentum behind Stratton versus how much Cargill may not be ready for a main-title run is unclear. Cargill has improved leaps and bounds in the year-plus since her WWE debut, and while SummerSlam wasn't her moment, she appears right on the cusp of the next level. 4. An enormous moment for Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker joining Seth Rollins always felt like it was the right step for two stars ready to move into the next tier of their WWE journies. Rollins' 'injury' offered a glimpse into the future, as Breakker is ready-made for the main event and Reed has picked up right where he left off before his ankle injury. Opening SummerSlam against the caliber of talent as Roman Reigns and Jey Uso showed just how far they've come, and the duo didn't miss a beat. The structure of the match went about as anticipated, with Reigns and Uso dispatching Rollins' henchmen. Reigns and Uso as part of the post-SummerSlam roster adds some intrigue for what happens next, following CM Punk as former champions who have beef with the new World Heavyweight Champion, Rollins. Other thoughts: - Despite an enormous social push and fan reactions, Karrion Kross appears to be on his way out of the company. Recently asked about his contract, Kross chose not to answer directly. Instead, his SummerSlam match against Sami Zayn resulted in another clean loss for Kross ahead of what appears to be his WWE exit. Kross is an unlikely example of when crowd reactions get talent more television time and that's about it. If this is it for Kross in WWE, it will be fascinating to see what happens in his post-WWE run — and if he's able to sustain the momentum he's built in recent months. - Jelly Roll's inclusion in SummerSlam didn't set the world on fire in the way Bad Bunny was able to, but he served his purpose. There was no insane work rate, but he took some wild spots, including a splash through the table and a frog splash finish from Logan Paul. The Paul Levesque regime has shifted in a way with celebrity appearances, which follows more logic-based booking. Jelly Roll and Pat McAfee both having matches this calendar year and both coming in losing efforts is more digestible than seeing folks waltz into the ring and get victories over world championship contenders.

MLB Speedway Classic between Braves, Reds drowned out by rain after less than an inning of play
The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds were ready to start their engines Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. Then Mother Nature waved the red flag not once but twice before play was ultimately suspended. The MLB Speedway Classic began with a 2 1/2 hour rain delay, followed by less than a full inning of baseball, followed by another delay that resulted in a suspension of play until Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at the same venue. Cincinnati will take a 1-0 lead into the next day. The Reds scored off an Austin Hays single to left, their third hit of the frame. First pitch finally arrived at 9:40 p.m. ET. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Because of the lengthy delay, Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider was scratched from the start. Strider, who grew up in Tennessee, went through warmups prior to the delay. Left-handed reliever Austin Cox, who had previously started only three games in his brief MLB career, got the nod for the Braves instead. They were planning to lean on their bullpen Saturday night. The Reds, on the other hand, didn't scratch their starter. They still rolled with Chase Burns, a 22-year-old who grew up in Tennessee as well and played college baseball for the Tennessee Volunteers. Burns produced a 1-2-3 inning to start the game. Leading up to the original 7:15 p.m. ET start time, pregame festivities included performances from Pitbull and Tim McGraw, U.S. Navy Musician First Class Kathryn Dobyns singing the national anthem, NASCAR pit crews helping introduce the starting lineups by servicing Braves- and Reds-themed stock cars and a flyover by four U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. But the rain started coming down. It was pouring when Braves icon Chipper Jones and Reds legend Johnny Bench participated in the ceremonial first pitches. Jones, an eight-time All-Star and one-time World Series champion with the Braves, threw to NASCAR driver Chase Elliott. Fellow NASCAR driver Kyle Busch — a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion — walked out to Bench, a 14-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion with the Reds, and traded spots, allowing the 77-year-old Bench to man his old position as catcher. As the rain continued to hit the converted diamond in the heart of the race track, the tarp came out. Nevertheless, a good number of fans originally expected to break MLB's all-time regular-season, single-game attendance record Saturday stayed put. Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci collected interviews for Fox Sports during the delay, showcasing how players and coaches for both teams still shared that enthusiasm. The grounds crew started removing the tarp around 8:50 p.m. ET. After the field was drained, the game finally started. But it wasn't long before the rain picked up again and the tarp returned. "We'll be back tomorrow, 1 o'clock resume," said Michael Hill, MLB senior vice president of on-field operations. "We are optimistic for a better weather forecast tomorrow."
