Who is Happy Passia? What are the criminal charges against the gangster behind 14 grenade attacks in Punjab?
United States-based Indian gangster Happy Passia, alias Jora, was arrested on April 17 from California's Sacramento by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He is alleged to have collaborated with Pakistan's ISI and is suspected of having ties with Khalistani extremist group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).
Notably, Happy Passia originally hails from Passia village in Amritsar district. Declared as one of the most wanted criminals by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) after a series of terror attacks across Punjab that targeted police stations and public institutions, he is an accused in multiple cases.
A wanted criminal in 17 cases, he faces several charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Arms Act, and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The NIA placed a ₹ 5 lakh reward on him in connection with the 2024 Chandigarh grenade attack. A total of 16 grenade attacks were reported in Punjab that are linked to him. The blasts took place at police posts, religious sites, and residences of public figures, including BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia.
It is alleged that Happy Passia provided weapons, funds, and logistical support to operatives to attack a house in Sector 10, Chandigarh on September 11 last year. He executed the strike with the help of Pakistan-based terrorist Harwinder Singh Sandhu alias Rinda.

NEW DELHI: Indian entrepreneur Ayush Panchmiya lost his passport, US visa, credit cards, and cash while in Barcelona, Spain, after a bag theft at a local Starbucks. The incident occurred shortly after he arrived in the city following a work trip to ETHCC Cannes. 'We had just landed in Barcelona after a heavy week at ETHCC Cannes. It was a chill morning for us,' he wrote. Panchmiya said he stepped outside for a call, leaving his small black bag under the table. 'Something I'd done a hundred times on trips like these.' When he returned, the bag was gone. The missing items included his passport, US visa, credit cards, and a large amount of cash. He approached Starbucks staff to check the CCTV footage but was told the police would need to be involved first. 'I ran to the Starbucks staff, begged them to show me the CCTV. They couldn't, said the police had to get involved first,' he said. At the police station, Panchmiya was informed that reviewing the footage would take time. 'Police said: 'It'll take 15 to 20 days for us to even review the CCTV footage,'' he wrote. With his return flight to India scheduled for Monday and the Indian embassy closed for the weekend, he waited until Monday to seek help. 'I walked in as soon as they opened. And I cannot thank them enough, they issued me an emergency certificate (a temporary passport) in just 4 to 5 hours. That same evening, I was back on a flight to India,' he wrote. Now back in India, Panchmiya is reapplying for his passport and visas. He said he shared the experience to inform others who may find themselves in a similar situation while travelling. Offering guidance, Panchmiya said, 'Don't panic. Immediately go to the nearest police station. File a report. Walk into your embassy in person. Don't just email or call. Explain everything clearly.' He added, 'Ask for an emergency certificate. If your flight is close, they can issue one in hours.' Reflecting on the situation, he noted, 'I've never had my passport stolen before. But now I've seen firsthand how quickly things can flip. And also, how supportive the Indian embassy and the Web3 community around me can be in tough times.' He concluded the post by stating that he is now safe at home and shared the story in the hope that it helps others navigate a similar situation.

Live Events On August 1, the court disposed of an application of Rana seeking a regular telephone facility for his family in view of the denial of the facility by the jail authorities. Earlier, he was permitted to make a single call to his family. Rana is in judicial custody after NIA interrogation in the 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack case. Rana is the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai Attack. He was extradited from the USA in April this year. Earlier, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on July 9 filed a supplementary charge sheet against Tahawur Rana in the 26/11 Mumbai terror case. The court had extended the judicial custody of Rana till August 13. This supplementary charge sheet contains procedural documents like arrest memo, seizure memo and other documents, Rana's counsel Piyush Sachdev had told ANI. The main charge sheet was filed by the NIA in December 2011. On June 9, the Court had granted Tahawwur Rana permission to make a single phone call to his family for the time being. The call was strictly conducted in accordance with jail regulations and under the supervision of a senior official from the Tihar jail authorities. Recently, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) collected voice and handwriting samples from Rana, who was extradited from the United States. The NIA had previously informed the court that Rana was confronted with substantial evidence related to the 26/11 attacks. The agency argued for further custody, citing his evasive behaviour during questioning and lack of cooperation. Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan and Special Public Prosecutor Narender Mann represented the NIA in the proceedings, while Advocate Piyush Sachdeva defended Rana. 64-year-old Canadian businessman of Pakistorigin, Rana, was extradited recently in connection with his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks . No proposal to stop supply of Rs 500 notes: MoS Finance
New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) There is no proposal to stop supply of Rs 500 denomination banknotes and ATMs will continue disbursing Rs 500 alongside Rs 100 or Rs 200, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed Parliament on Tuesday. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has informed that as part of their endeavour to enhance public access to frequently used denominations of banknotes, a circular titled 'Dispensation of Rs 100 and Rs 200 denomination banknotes through ATMs' has been issued on April 28, 2025, directing all banks and White Label ATM Operators (WLAOs) to ensure that their ATMs dispense Rs 100 and Rs 200 denomination banknotes on a regular basis, he said. In a written response to the Rajya Sabha, he said, as per the milestones set by the RBI, 75 per cent of all ATMs would dispense either Rs 100 or Rs 200 denomination banknotes from at least one cassette by September 30, 2025. By March 31, 2026, he said, 90 per cent of all ATMs would dispense either Rs 100 or Rs 200 denomination banknotes from at least one cassette. Replying to another question, Chaudhary said Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has taken up 76 cases during the period from April 2020 to March 2025 or the last five financial years. During the last financial year, Sebi received Rs 949.43 crore from disgorgement. Disgorgement refers to the act of compelling a person or entity to surrender any ill-gotten gains obtained through illegal or unethical practices in the securities market. 'Fraud and cheating are punishable offences as per Indian laws. Several central government, enforcement, and regulatory agencies have been taking action to prevent, detect, and act against investment related frauds," he said. In the last five years, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has identified nine cases, primarily relating to multi-level marketing (MLM) scams, he said. During the period from January 1, 2020 to July 30, 2025, the Directorate of Enforcement has taken up around 220 cases for investigation of the offence of money-laundering under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA), related to investment related frauds, he said. Crypto assets are currently not regulated in India, he said, adding that the RBI-SACHET portal receives complaints pertaining to unauthorised deposit taking activities from unregistered/unincorporated entities. Between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2025, approximately 3,454 complaints have been received on the SACHET Portal pertaining to 'non-repayment of money collected from various kinds of investment schemes", and 1,531 complaints have been received pertaining to collection of money through MLM, direct selling, and ponzi schemes, based on complaint categories selected by complainants, he said.
