Mamelodi Sundowns emerged as the stand-out African club at the Fifa Club World Cup, which saw all four African representatives failing to advance to the knockout stage.
On Wednesday night in Miami, despite a gripping 0-0 draw against the Brazilian football powerhouse Fluminense, Sundowns fell just one point shy of reaching the last-16 round.
At the start of the tournament, Masandawana were overshadowed by the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense.
However, they quickly transformed into a team that captured the imagination of the fans while demonstrating their mettle on the world stage.
Their presence in Group F became a narrative of inspiration and unexpected brilliance since very little was known about the South Africans before the tournament.
Travelling to the USA to represent South Africa alongside African heavyweights like Al Ahly from Egypt, Tunisia's Esperance, and Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Sundowns were aware of the challenge that lay ahead.
Collectively, those teams boast an impressive legacy of 19 CAF Champions League titles.
Disappointingly, none managed to progress past the group phase, with Masandawana making the most memorable impression despite their early departure.

Sundowns found themselves grappling with a pace of play and pressing intensity they seldom experience domestically.
The volume of turnovers and inability to maintain possession indicated the pressure exerted by their rivals.
Each match became a trial by fire, but the Brazilians proved they could rise to the occasion against stiff competition.
The stands at Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday were filled predominantly with Fluminense's supporters.
However, the contingent of 50 yellow-and-green-clad Sundowns fans created a gala-like atmosphere.
Their spirited chants, elaborate choreography and rhythmic drumming transcended the noise levels, inviting neutral spectators to join their celebration.
Their fans, some donned in exquisite sequined headdresses, painted a vivid picture of dedication and passion that echoed through the venue.
The Club World Cup offers a platform for teams from around the globe to showcase their talents, and Mamelodi Sundowns took full advantage of this opportunity.

Ackermann eyes culture shift at Bulls: It's not about you

New Bulls boss Johan Ackermann has promised a values-driven approach, aiming to build a team that wins with humility and unity. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Johan Ackermann wants to change the Bulls — and not just on the field. The new coach, appointed in the wake of Jake White's departure earlier this month, is fully aware that it will be there — on the field — where he will ultimately be judged by the majority of South Africans. But on Wednesday, Ackermann laid out a broader vision: to develop not just better rugby players, but better people. 'I want a team that works hard,' said Ackermann in his first media appointment as head coach from Loftus Versveld. 'So, if you're not willing to work hard, it's going to be a problem. I want a team that — he says — is a serving team … it's not about you. You must serve the team first. 'It is about picking up a thing that lies around, giving somebody water first before you drink it, caring for your teammates and those around you… You have the opportunity to treat people, so how do you treat them? 'If we have that respect and trust for each other, that will be important. 'The last thing is, I said (to the players), I want to trust you. If I say something you don't like, tell me immediately. 'The style of play,' the 55-year-old added, 'I don't want to say too much about that. That is something that we must keep to ourselves, but I will say that, hopefully, the supporters will enjoy the style of play.' Ackermann inherits arguably the best team in South Africa. Under White, the Bulls reached three United Rugby Championship finals in four years. They lost all three, which seemingly resulted in an unhealthy degree of frustration creeping into the changeroom. Recent reports suggest that a player revolt terminated White's relationship with the team and the union — the aforementioned of which were unhappy with the former World Cup-winning coach's comments regarding their skillsets, or lack thereof, after their final loss to Leinster. Ackermann was careful not to cast judgement on what had come before but reiterated a belief that the squad he will be working with in the coming months has the capacity to remain at the forefront of South African rugby. "It's always difficult to make any comments from the outside,' said Ackermann. 'I think the reality is, if you haven't worked with a player, you haven't worked with a team, it is difficult to make any conclusions. 'For me, the first thing is to get to know each player, each talent — what their strengths are and what they can do. Then you can put a plan in place according to those players' strengths and then change tactics and etcetera. 'I do believe it's a good squad.' Ackermann arrived in Pretoria earlier this week after helping the Junior Springboks win the bronze medal at the World Rugby Under-20 Championship, and intends to first familiarise himself with the structures and resources of the Bulls. As such, he will have a limited role — initially — in the upcoming Currie Cup campaign, with the possibility of it expanding if required. The Bulls start that campaign this weekend against Western Province under the guidance of coach Phiwe Nonlomo. That game kicks off at 5.10pm on Saturday from Cape Town Stadium.

Gabriela Salgado undergoes surgery after gruesome injury in Banyana's Wafcon exit

On the mend SAFA say Gabriela Salgado underwent a successful operation after breaking her leg in Banyana Banyana's Women's African Cup of Nations semi-final loss to Nigeria on Tuesday. Photo: Nour Aknajja/BackpagePix Image: Nour Aknajja/BackpagePix The South African Football Association has given an update on Gabriela Salgado, who suffered a horror injury in Banyana Banyana's heartbreaking Women's Africa Cup of Nations semi-final loss on Tuesday. With the game evenly poised at 1-1 and entering the final minutes, Salgado collided with a Nigerian opponent, leaving nearby teammates visibly distressed. After being stabilised by paramedics, she was later stretchered off the field, with Nigerian fans chanting 'Gabby! Gabby! Gabby!' The South Africans never recovered after the incident, and Nigeria were able to capitalise through a stoppage-time winner by Michelle Alozie, sending them to the final and knocking Desiree Ellis' team out of the tournament. 'Gabi sustained a fracture of the mid-shaft of her left leg during the fixture against Nigeria and underwent a successful surgery,' said Banyana Banyana team doctor, Dr Lindi Mokoena. 'She will be out of action for the rest of the year, but we are pleased that she received exceptional care from the medical team of Banyana Banyana, CAF, and the hospital. 'We were fully confident and comfortable with the procedure being performed in Morocco and would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to CAF and the dedicated staff at the Mohamed VI University Hospital for their professionalism and outstanding support during this time.' On Wednesday, Salgado, in hospital, received a message of encouragement from South African president Cyril Ramaphosa. 'Today, our thoughts are with Banyana Banyana's Gabriela Salgado as we wish her a comfortable and speedy recovery from her traumatic injury in last night's WAFCON semi-final against a victorious Nigeria,' a statement from the president read. 'I know you're a woman of deep and public faith, Gabriela, and you're a woman of bravery and skill on the pitch. The nation wishes you well. Casablanca was always going to be a tough ask for our national team as Africa's defending champions, and Nigeria's breakthrough in referee's optional time proved this. 'We are confident Banyana Banyana will regroup and return to WAFCON as future champs. We wish Nigeria's Super Falcons and Morocco's Atlas Lionesses well for Saturday's dream home final for the host nation.' Banyana will go up against Ghana in Friday's third-place play-off. Update on Kaizer Chiefs and Nigerian striker

Kaizer Chiefs followers have been desperate for clarity. Etiosa Ighodaro, who recently played on loan at AmaZulu, had supposedly signed for Amakhosi. With the Betway Premiership starting in less than a month, the 24-year-old Nigerian has still not been seen in a Kaizer Chiefs tracksuit. What's actually happening? Didn't his deal with Mamelodi Sundowns run its course? Kaizer Chiefs news: R70 million income and experienced number six The latest on Etiosa Ighodaro and Kaizer Chiefs move. Image: According to the latest report, the towering striker is still a Sundowns player until June 2026. Amakhosi are therefore waiting on Sundowns to make a decision on Ighodaro. Kaizer Chiefs news: Underfire striker and more signings 'At the moment Kaizer Chiefs are waiting on Sundowns,' an insider told Soccer Laduma . 'Ighodaro has one year remaining on his contract with Sundowns and only if they can release him first as a free agent or if they can buy him from the remaining months on his contract. 'But Chiefs are interested in him and depending on what Sundowns' decision is, then Chiefs would still sign him before the start of the season. Additional details say Sundowns are unable to register Ighodaro since the Betway Premiership champions already have five foreign players. The Kaizer Chiefs target will only qualify for his Permanent Residence Permit in 2026. 'As soon as he obtains his Permanent Residence Permit, then Sundowns are believed to be willing to keep him because he won't affect their foreign quota and then it would be difficult for Chiefs to sign him this season. 'But it's believed that if there is a fee to be paid then Sundowns would consider letting him go whether it's to Kaizer Chiefs or any other team,' the insider concluded.
