US House Speaker Mike Johnson has called on the Justice Department to release all documents related to
Jeffrey Epstein
, the disgraced financier who died in federal custody in 2019 while facing sex-trafficking charges.
In an interview on Tuesday with podcaster Benny Johnson, Mike said: 'It's a very delicate subject, but we should put everything out there and let the people decide it.'
Johnson's remarks marked a rare public disagreement with US President
Donald Trump
, his close ally in Congress, over an issue that has angered many in Trump's conservative base, as reported by The Guardian.
Trump has faced criticism from his supporters for failing to make public all information about Epstein, who allegedly had ties to many powerful figures.
Last week, the justice department concluded that Epstein's death was a suicide and announced that no list of clients would be released, rejecting conspiracy theories.
Conservative allies of Trump have accused him and US attorney general Pam Bondi of handling the case poorly.
During the interview, Speaker John also referred to Bondi's earlier claim on Fox News that she had Epstein's client list on her desk to review: 'She needs to come forward and explain that to everybody.

We need the DOJ focusing on major priorities. So let's get this thing resolved.'
Earlier on Tuesday, House Republicans voted down a proposal from Democrats. The proposal would have added a rule to a new law that would require the justice department to release Epstein-related files.
Despite this setback, Democrats say they will keep pushing the issue. Members of the House Judiciary Committee have called on its Republican chair, Representative Jim Jordan, a Trump ally, to hold hearings with Bondi, her deputy and FBI leaders to answer questions about Epstein.
Speaking to reporters before leaving the White House for Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Trump defended Bondi but suggested she could choose to release more documents: 'She's handled it very well, and it's going to be up to her. Whatever she thinks is credible, she should release.'
When NBC News asked Bondi about Trump's MAGA allies' frustration with how she has handled the case, she shifted the focus to other issues: 'We're going to fight to keep America safe again. We've got a war on drugs. We've got a war on human trafficking. We've got cartels in this country … we have foreign adversaries around this world as well, and we're all going to work together as a team.'

Trump teases ‘big trade deal' as he welcomes Philippine President Marcos to White House

US President Donald Trump hosted Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House on Tuesday (July 22), as the United States and the Philippines aim to deepen strategic and economic cooperation amid growing regional tensions, particularly with China. Marcos became the first Southeast Asian leader to visit the White House since Trump's re-election. The three-day state visit included meetings with top US officials such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Trump told reporters, 'We're very close to finishing a trade deal — big trade deal, actually,' signaling potential progress on a long-anticipated bilateral agreement. Marcos expressed strong support for the alliance, calling the US-Philippines relationship 'as important a relationship as is possible to have.' When asked about balancing ties between Washington and Beijing, Marcos emphasised Philippine sovereignty: 'There is no need to balance because our foreign policy is an independent one,' he said. 'Our strongest partner has always been the United States.' 'I intend to convey to President Trump and his Cabinet officials that the Philippines is ready to negotiate a bilateral trade deal that will ensure strong, mutually beneficial and future-oriented collaborations,' Marcos said prior to his departure from Manila. Philippine Finance Secretary Ralph Recto indicated the country is open to zero tariffs on certain US goods in exchange for an agreement. In remarks Monday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reaffirmed US support for the Philippines under the Mutual Defense Treaty. 'Our storied alliance has never been stronger or more essential than it is today,' Hegseth said. 'This pact extends to armed attacks on our armed forces, aircraft or public vessels, including our Coast Guard anywhere in the Pacific, including the South China Sea.' Marcos responded by reaffirming Manila's commitment to the alliance: 'That assurance continues to be the cornerstone of that relationship, especially when it comes to defense and security cooperation.' Tensions in the South China Sea were a key backdrop to the visit. China's coast guard has repeatedly used water cannons on Filipino vessels in disputed waters, drawing international concern. The White House said the Trump-Marcos discussions emphasized a shared vision for a 'free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific.' Hegseth, in a May speech, had warned that 'China poses a threat' and the US is 'reorienting toward deterring aggression by Communist China.' Despite growing friction, the US remains open to dialogue with China. Rubio met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi earlier this month in Kuala Lumpur, where both sides agreed to manage tensions and seek areas for cooperation. Meanwhile, Marcos's meeting with Rubio in Washington reinforced both nations' commitment 'to maintain peace and stability' in the region, according to the State Department.

Facing pressure on Epstein files, US Speaker Mike Johnson shuts House early, blocks vote

US House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Tuesday that he would shut the House down early for its summer recess in order to head off Democratic demands for votes on calling for the release of files from the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier and sex offender who was once friends with Donald Trump. In order to avoid what he called 'political games,' Johnson announced that the House would adjourn until September after votes scheduled for Wednesday night. 'We're done being lectured on transparency,' Johnson said at a press conference, visibly frustrated. 'We're not going to play political games with this.' Mike Johnson on canceling Congress until September: 'We're not going to play political games with [Epstein]' — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) July 22, 2025 The announcement came just after the House Oversight Committee voted to subpoena Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's longtime associate and alleged co-conspirator, for a deposition. Johnson also sought to reaffirm Trump's commitment to 'transparency' and securing the release of all 'credible' evidence relating to the case. 'I believe in maximum transparency,' Johnson said, later adding: 'The President himself has said that he wants maximum transparency and all credible evidence to be turned over to the American public, so that everyone can make their own decisions. We're owed that.' He lashed out at what he described as 'Democrats' endless efforts to politicise the Epstein controversy and the whole investigation,' accusing them of staging a 'charade' and engaging in 'political games.' Republicans had initially scheduled votes this week on several unrelated bills — including an immigration measure, a permitting bill, and rollbacks of Biden-era regulations. But Democrats on the powerful House Rules Committee repeatedly demanded votes on Epstein-related resolutions as part of these proceedings, creating a procedural logjam. Faced with the prospect of being forced to vote on Epstein disclosures, a step many in the GOP fear could alienate their base or spotlight uncomfortable connections, Republican leadership decided to abandon its planned agenda altogether. Johnson now plans to adjourn the House by midafternoon Wednesday after clearing a few noncontroversial measures. Johnson had previously indicated some willingness to release the files, but on Monday, he reversed course, saying Trump needed 'space' to decide how to proceed. He insisted Tuesday that Republicans are 'united' on the issue — even as party infighting and public pressure suggest otherwise.

Putin Dollar Shock For Trump After BRICS Declaration? Russia's Big De-Dollarisation Announcement Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov clarified that BRICS nations don't aim to replace the US dollar, but rather seek alternatives for mutual settlements to circumvent US sanctions. He stated BRICS intends to trade in national currencies, with Russia already conducting 90% of payments with partners in local denominations. This counters US President Trump's concerns and threats of tariffs on BRICS countries, who are also developing "BRICS Pay," a decentralized blockchain payment system for cross-border transactions. 42.2K views | 2 days ago
