Prince William tipped to hand over role 'he's never felt comfortable with'

Daily Mirror23-06-2025
Prince William is already said to be mulling over big decisions about changes he will make when he becomes King, with Zara Tindall tipped to be given an important job that has never be an real interest for William
Prince William is already said to be mulling over big decisions about how he will revolutionise and modernise the royal family when he becomes King, including which members of the Firm will be handed important roles. While many senior working royals are expected to take a step back from their royal duties in the coming years as they get older, William is said to already be scouting who would be a good fit for certain royal responsibilities.
According to one insider, who has a close relationship with William and the royal family at large, he has already selected one royal to take over a role he had "never felt comfortable with" when he ascends to the throne.

A well-placed royal source revealed that one job William is keen to delegate when he becomes King is the racing responsibilities, and could hand them off to his cousin Zara Tindall.
William doesn't share the same love of horse racing held by King Charles and Queen Camilla, with the family's passion for horses and racing stemming back to the late Queen Elizabeth.
Zara, a former Olympian equestrian like her mother Princess Anne, may take up the reins of the royal racing calendar, given that it is a role Prince William has 'never felt comfortable with'. The royal source told The Times: 'I never get the feeling the whole top hat and racing is really his thing, and he's said as much. He's never really seemed comfortable doing it.'
A source close to William added that 'he understands how important Ascot is, not just to the racing community but to UK plc', but will not be as hands on with Royal Ascot and the royal stud at Sandringham as monarchs have been in the past.
Despite not being a big racing fan, William attended the second day of Royal Ascot last week, riding in the carriage solo after Princess Kate pulled out of attending at the last minute.

William also rode on horseback during Trooping the Colour, in order to honour his father on the day of his official birthday celebrations. While Zara is tipped to hold a more major royal role when William becomes King, other non-working royal family members have also said to have been put forward to have a more senior capacity when he ascends the throne.
Zara's husband Mike, Zara's brother Peter Phillips and the York sisters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, are all expected to step up when William becomes King, it has been reported. While none of them are currently working royals, they have been spotted supporting William and other senior members of the royal family at various events over the last year.
With the Duke of Kent, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Princess Royal all expected to scale back their royal duties in the coming years as they get older, William is also expected to lean on Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie as senior royals, while he decides which members of his family he will ask to step into more prominent roles.

Who's deceiving whom?: The Art of the Lie, by Laura Shepherd-Robinson, reviewed

In this age of lies and delusions, the trickster may seem to be a peculiarly modern creature, but he or she is almost as old as literature itself. Long before phishing or fake news, stories about cunning foxes, Loki, Anansi the Spider-Man and Odysseus brought delight; Puck, Tom Ripley and Sarah Waters's fingersmith Sue Trinder are some of their descendants. Encountering such a figure is always a joy, and in Laura Shepherd-Robinson's latest novel, The Art of a Lie, there are two. Hannah Cole is a shopkeeper in 18th-century London, struggling to keep her confectionary business open. Her husband Jonas has been murdered, and we soon learn that not only is the celebrated author and magistrate Henry Fielding investigating Mr Cole's death but that Hannah is, in fact, his killer. What may save her fortunes, and possibly her neck, is William Devereux, a friend of her late husband. He suggests that she try her luck at making a new delicacy for the gentry: 'iced cream'. And he is enlisted by Hannah to try to misdirect Fielding as to her husband's killer. Only William, too, is not what he seems. A serial confidence trickster, he seduces rich widows and leaves them broken-hearted and empty-pursed. The stage is set for a novel of suspense whose artfulness echoes the elegance, imagination, wit and ruthlessness that Georgian craftsmen (and women) excelled in. Each of Shepherd-Robinson's previous novels, beginning with Blood & Sugar in 2019, has plumbed the social and criminal depths of an era which many regard as the apogee of British life. She interweaves its beauties and its villainies (the slave trade, prostitution, gambling) in a way that pricks the conscience even as it entertains. The Art of a Lie is about an era in which men and women of every class practised to deceive each other for pecuniary gain, either through marriage or manipulation – something that is less remote from us than we like to think. The novel is narrated by Hannah and William in turn, each deftly depicted and neither entirely reliable. Hannah has no weapon but her little pastry knife, concealed in her bodice, her wits, her looks and the assumption that a woman must be weak and helpless. She has killed her treacherous husband in self-defence, and is clever enough to make it look like a robbery: but will Fielding's strange mix of reforming zeal, honesty and insight prove her undoing? William seems to be the perfect gentleman of means, and he does indeed help Hannah turn her business around with a recipe for peach ice cream before bedazzling her with his supposed fortune. His true character is shockingly different. 'Did you ever see a bigger cunt than Henry Fielding?' is how he introduces himself to us; and believing the novelist and tenacious inquisitor to be his only problem is the first of many mistakes. With a crew of criminals to back up his deceptions, he also has his own demons, in the shape of a violent crook to whom he owes a lot of money. But he is confident that his four-part technique with widows (which he calls the Mirror, the Dance, the Rope and the Drop) will carry him through to another success. This is a pleasingly sophisticated and twisty novel. Hannah is intelligent, brave and sharply observant about human psychology, but insufficiently wary about what she is being led to believe. William's insouciant voice, misogyny, lies and self-delusion are skewered in a way that 21st-century readers may find sadly contemporary, even as you also feel his charm. 'Contrary to what you might think, I don't hate women. I couldn't do this job if I did,' he says. He claims he's not 'the worst kind of villain' – because he refrains from taking everything, leaving his victims 'with their pride intact and their fortunes only somewhat diminished'. For guiding widows out of grieving for their husbands and lost youth into a new world, he argues that he deserves payment – and only one furious, broken former conquest from Bath is hot on his trail, seeking vengeance. He has more feelings than he likes to admit, just as Hannah has more sense and resilience. Falling genuinely in love with your victim is fatal for the trickster, but who will be the less deceived? Unusually, The Art of a Lie is also a celebration of the early days of trade, with the dawn of businesses– such as Fortnum & Mason, Floris and Berry Bros – which still carry lustre to this day. The author tells us in an afterword that there were a surprising number of businesses owned by women in this period, and Hannah stands for those who did not need rescuing by a Mr Darcy or, for that matter, Fielding's Tom Jones. She is an intriguing character, and I hope we meet her again. Too much literary fiction falls into a softened version of the past, but the best historical crime novels are sharply corrective of this. Like C.J. Sansom, Abir Mukherjee, Tim Pears and S.J. Parris, Laura Shepherd-Robinson has taken a moral microscope to her chosen period and shown us the truth about its lies – and our own.

Sosie carrying French hopes of total Eclipse at the weekend

The four-year-old has won six of his nine starts for Andre Fabre, breaking his Group One duck in the Grand Prix de Paris last season before signing off with a fourth-placed finish in the Arc. The Sea The Stars colt appears to have taken his game to another level since returning to action this spring, successfully dropping back in trip to land both the Prix Ganay and the Prix d'Ispahan at ParisLongchamp, and connections expect a stiff mile and a quarter at Sandown to suit him ideally. Sosie lands the Group One Prix Ganay on his seasonal reappearance!🇫🇷 The Sea The Stars colt was always doing enough to hold on from the fast-finishing Map Of Stars! — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) April 27, 2025 Pierre-Yves Bureau, racing manager for owners the Wertheimer brothers, said: 'I think he's a very good horse, he's won three Group Ones and we're very excited to travel him to England for such a big race. 'The fact he has now won Group Ones over nine furlongs and 10 furlongs changed a lot of things, of course. I don't know how the ground (at Sandown) is going to be at the moment, but he will be happy with good ground.' Sosie is second-favourite for the Eclipse behind John and Thady Gosden's Ombudsman, who is set to turn out less than three weeks after his brilliant display in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot. Aidan O'Brien's French Derby winner Camille Pissarro and the Owen Burrows-trained Anmaat are other contenders for what looks a particularly strong renewal, but having seen Vadeni become the first French-trained winner of the race since 1960 three years ago, Sosie's camp are relishing the challenge. 'I think it's a very good test and it's a very strong field,' Bureau added. 'It will be interesting to see the three-year-olds and it comes quite quickly for the horses after Royal Ascot, but our horse is doing very well and hopefully he can be competitive.' It is 10 years since the famous Wertheimer silks were last carried into the Group One winner's enclosure in Britain, with Solow winning the Queen Anne, the Sussex Stakes and the QEII during a fantastic 2015 campaign. Bureau said: 'We don't come that often, but we like to come with horses that have strong chances. 'It's going to be very exciting, hopefully Sosie can continue the very nice start he has made this year.'
