Rams training camp preview: Who steps up at inside linebacker?

Rams training camp preview: Who steps up at inside linebacker?

Yahoo3 days ago
No position group on the Los Angeles Rams' depth chart is more fluid than inside linebacker. There are four players vying for two starting spots, ranging from a veteran such as Troy Reeder to a rookie in Chris Paul Jr.
There's a lot to be sorted out at this spot, and while it may not be a highly prioritized position for Sean McVay and Les Snead, it is a critical role on defense. So who will emerge as the two starters? And who will remain on the field as a three-down linebacker once the season begins?

Training camp will help the Rams figure things out at a wide-open position.
Roster locks
Omar Speights
Nate Landman
Chris Paul Jr.
Speights took over as a starter next to Christian Rozeboom after Troy Reeder got hurt, maintaining his grip on that role through the end of the season. Landman was a free-agent addition following his stint with the Falcons, while Paul was a fifth-round pick out of Ole Miss.
All three should be locks to make the team despite none of them being certain to be starters on defense.
Likely to make it
None
Reeder was close to making this tier, especially with his special teams value, but there's no guaranteed the Rams will even keep four inside linebackers. They could go with just three to start the year in hopes of stashing Reeder on the practice squad if he clears waivers (which he should).

On the bubble
Troy Reeder
Elias Neal
Shaun Dolac
Tony Fields II
Reeder probably has the edge over the other three linebackers in this group, simply because he's a former starter on defense. But he regressed last year and fell out of favor, with the Rams opting not to activate him off IR despite having the opportunity to in the postseason.
Dolac is the only undrafted rookie at inside linebacker but he's certainly not someone to overlook after the career he had at Buffalo.
Position battle to watch
Speights vs. Landman vs. Paul vs. Reeder
It's possible this will be a four-for-two deal: four players competing for two starting spots. The pecking order could be just as it's listed above, with Speights having the first crack at a starting job and Landman close behind him. Paul will need to earn his stripes as a fifth-round rookie but the promise is certainly there; he's the most athletic linebacker on the team.

Potential sleeper
Shaun Dolac
Dolac had an FBS-leading 168 tackles at Buffalo last season, along with five interceptions, 6.5 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss. He was all over the field and he'll try to keep up that reputation as a member of the Rams in training camp.
In such a wide-open position group, Dolac has a chance to make some noise this summer.

Wan'Dale Robinson, Andru Phillips put on receiver-cornerback show at Giants training camp

You got me. … I got you. That is the way it went down Thursday as two good friends and Giants teammates squared off at training camp. Advertisement Wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson got cornerback Andru Phillips, and soon after, Phillips got Robinson. The first interaction turned out to be the play of the day. Russell Wilson tossed one of his familiar moonballs into the right corner of the end zone, intended for the 5-foot-8 Robinson — not a route he runs often. Phillips was step for step in coverage, the ball came down and it looked to be an incomplete pass as both players tumbled to the grass. Robinson, while sliding, got his hands under the ball and made the grab. Advertisement 3 Wan'Dale Robinson runs after a catch during a Giants OTA practice on June 12, 2025. I thought it was incomplete. Just a helluva catch. That just pissed me off so bad. So next play, when that pick came back, I was just so locked in. It was cool.' Advertisement It sure was cool for Phillips. He ran across Robinson on a shorter route and intercepted Wilson's pass. 'How can he do that?' Robinson shouted to the nearby official, showing how Phillips used his arm to swing him around to get the ball. 'I undercut him and I just saw ball,' Phillips said. 'I'm going for the ball, so who cares?' These two players were college teammates at Kentucky, so there is a history, and a bond. 'We've been around each other so long, it's like, 'You got me.' ' Rookie Jaxson Dart fired an interception Wednesday on his first pass of his first team period in his first NFL training camp, the ball picked off by CB Nic Jones. 'You talk about it right after it,' head coach Brian Daboll said a day later. 'I mean, the defense made a good play. That's what these practices are for, for everybody. There'll be some good, there'll be some things we need to correct and make sure you correct them and move on.' Daboll added he liked the way Dart responded after the turnover. 'He's going to make those mistakes,' Daboll said. 'Everybody's going to make them. He did a good job coming back. You don't want to throw picks, but that's why we're practicing.' 71-Year-Old Jockey Perry Ouzts Approaching New Record

71-Year-Old Jockey Perry Ouzts Approaching New Record originally appeared on Paulick Report. "Ironman" jockey Perry Ouzts, 71, will start a new record for starts in a Thoroughbred horse race in this Saturday's fifth race at Belterra Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. The veteran jockey will enter the starting gate for a 53,579th time, eclipsing the previous record set by retired California-based rider Russell Baze. At this writing, Ouzts sports a record of 53,570 starts– 7,514 wins – 7,013 seconds – 6,694 thirds, for earnings of $53,055,913. The next active rider is Hall of Famer John Velazquez with 37,363 mounts and 6,703 is also the record holder as the oldest jockey to win a race in North America — a feat he accomplished last summer. Ouzts has spent most of his career riding in Northern Kentucky and Ohio. Though he has never won a graded stakes race, he was the subject of an award-winning 2015 documentary "Ironman Perry Ouzts," produced by the Hennegan ranks fifth all-time in wins, trailing only Russell Baze (12,842 wins), Laffit Pincay Jr. (9,530), William Shoemaker (8,833), and Pat Day (8,803).Ouzts told John Engelhardt that loyalty has been a key factor in his success. He credits the support of trainers W.J. Danner, Larry Holt, Joe Woodard, Bill Connelly, Matt Kordenbrock, Barb Riley and Larry Smith for the many winners they have put him up on. He has also had the same agent, Jamie Fowler, for 38 years. Fowler contracted throat cancer in February of 2023 and has undergone 50 radiation treatments, several surgeries, and 10 months of physical therapy. This week, Fowler was declared cancer-free. According to Ouzts: 'I asked if he could still do the job from home when it was discovered, and with texting, video replays and other on-line features, he hasn't missed a beat.' He has won 35 meet titles at River Downs/Belterra Park, 13 titles at the now defunct, Beulah Park and 2 titles at Turfway Park. He won the last race at River Downs and the first race there under its new name Belterra Park. He was the first jockey to win a stakes race at 70 years old. His richest races won were the $200,000 Cradle Stakes (2007), the $100,000 Queen City Oaks (1988) and the $100,000 Green Carpet Stakes (this season). He won four races on a horse named Oats N' Ouzts. He and his wife, Toni have two sons – Kyle (35) and Tyler (32). This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Jul 24, 2025, where it first appeared.

WATCH: Patrick Mahomes connects with Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown at Chiefs Training Camp

15 throws one to 5 🎬@PatrickMahomes x @Primetime_jet Veteran wide receiver Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown missed most of his first season with the Kansas City Chiefs due to an injury he sustained in the preseason, but returned to the field in time to make modest contributions in the team's run to Super Bowl LIX. Brown, who entered the league as a first-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in the 2019 NFL draft, has shown flashes of brilliance at training camp and was spotted reeling in a pass from star quarterback Patrick Mahomes at practice on Thursday, July 24. Check out this video of Brown's latest outstanding reception, which was posted to Twitter by the Chiefs' official account: While it remains to be seen if Brown will be able to return to form with Kansas City in 2025, the likely absence of fan-favorite wideout Rashee Rice due to a probable multi-week suspension could make the former Raven a top target for Mahomes early this season. Stay tuned for more videos of Brown, Mahomes, and the rest of the defending AFC champions as Chiefs Training Camp continues.
