Chris Tarrant blasts Phillip Schofield as 'the most overexposed man ever'

Former TV and radio star Chris Tarrant is no fan of Phillip Schofield and says he was 'overexposed' on ITV
Chris Tarrant has blasted Phillip Schofield as 'the most overexposed man ever'.
Tarrant, 78, is known for hosting hit TV shows like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and Tiswas. But he is not a fan of fellow former ITV star Schofield. Schofield quit ITV in 2023 after he admitted lying about an 'unwise but not illegal' affair with a man 34 years his junior who had worked on the daytime show. At the time he said his TV career was finished but he attempted to resurrect himself on screen with a Channel 5 series called Cast Away in 2024.

Referring to the Cast Away show, Tarrant said: "There was not a hint of apology or 'maybe I was a little bit out of order'. Christ Almighty."

He then told the Sunday Telegraph he thought Schofield "lost the plot" after fame went to his head. Tarrant added: 'He was the most overexposed man ever, maybe apart from Wogan at his peak.
'But Terry was on all the time because he was very good, funny and likeable, and bright as a button. I loved him. Schofield, they always said, 'Oh, but he's a safe pair of hands.' Did anyone ever say, 'Ooh, it's five to eight, got to get home quick because the safe pair of hands is on?' Dear oh dear. Those shows he did - Dancing On Ice, The Cube, everything - were mainly crap."
Nature loving Tarrant, who was giving the interview to promote a new book he has written about bears, also moaned about too many adverts on ITV where he used to work on quiz show Millionaire.
He said he mainly watched streaming services now for this reason and added: "We always used to say, 'See you in a couple of minutes,' but how long are the breaks now? Five or six minutes!
'I watch Netflix and Amazon Prime. Then I turn on an ITV drama and say, 'What? It's only been on three minutes and we've got a break!' And the sponsors and all that. When will it happen that the commercials are longer than the programme?'

Tarrant insisted he had now watched Jeremy Clarkson on quiz Millionaire who was his replacement. He claimed he had no interest in watching because he knew the format so well and he had 'the best of it, the glory years'.
Tarrant now lives in a posh Berkshire property with his partner Jane Bird of 20 years.

He has six children, including two stepchildren and six grandchildren aged three to 13 and rather than looking for any more work loves going on holidays. Sometimes two in quick succession.
'There is a glorious freedom in being able to travel without planning around work schedules,' he said.
"I'll tell you the sort of thing. This winter, after Christmas, we went on holiday to the Caribbean for five or six weeks.
"We got home about mid-February and it was bloody freezing. It went on and on, so I was like, 'F*** this, let's go back again. That's called enjoying retirement.'
* Tarrant's book 'For the Love of Bears' (Great Northern, £25) will be published on July 11.

Love Island spoilers: The heart rate challenge is back - and Helena leaves the boys reeling with VERY raunchy trick

The iconic heart rate challenge is set to return to Love Island and Helena leaves the boys reeling with a very raunchy trick. In scenes due to air on Monday's episode of the ITV reality show, Shakira receives a text message announcing a new challenge for the villa. She read: 'Islanders, it's time to get each others' pulses racing in tonight's Boys vs Girls challenge. #HeartthrobMode #BootyandBeats'. The girls go first, with Toni leading the way, and attempt to raise the boys' heart rates with saucy performances. Alima's heart-racing entrance stuns the men while Emily dresses like an angel and Shakira throws rose petals. But it's Helena's trick that really sets things off as she whispers something in Harry's ear. He later asks Tommy to pass the cheeky message on and Dejon looks shocked when he hears what Helena said. The boys take their turn to raise pulses too - Tommy's go-to is a whopping bouquet of red roses, while Conor tries his best with a Rugby ball. Harrison dons pleather as he tries to impress the girls while Giorgio dresses like a waiter and pours chocolate on his torso. As for Harry, he wears gold angel wings and chooses to whisper back in Helena's ear. Dejon's trick involves him lying Meg down on the floor. At the end of the challenge, the Islanders are told who raised their heart rates the highest and the results cause shock waves amongst the group. The evening before, Shakira confronts Harry about his kiss with Helena during the game of Snog, Marry, Pie. She asks him, 'Why did you do it?' Harry replies, 'Because I had no reason to kiss anyone else.' But Shakira isn't pleased with his reasoning and fumes, 'You knew that would p**s me off. 'You could've kissed anybody, then to get down on one knee like, I was going to be buzzing after I watched you snog her…' Harry attempts to make amends and says, 'I don't want to hurt you, I haven't tried to hurt you Shakira.' She replies, 'But you have. Everything in me is telling me to burn it.' Later on in the evening, the Islanders are called to recouple and the boys are given the power to choose first. Each share their feelings and reasoning behind their decisions, with some gushing over growing connections. Harry comments on 'choppy waters' and Harrison reveals his coupling choice explaining they 'naturally gravitate towards each other'. Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

Michael Sheen says NHS has been ‘integral' to his life as he plays its founder

The actor, 56, who plays Welsh Labour Party politician Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan in the show Nye, told ITV's Good Morning Britain: 'Just in the last couple of years, I've had a child be born into the world through the NHS and my father, just weeks ago, left the world helped by the NHS as well. 'So, it's been integral to my life in the last couple of years. And I know it pushes buttons for everybody when they come and see the play.' After a successful run last year, Sheen, a father-of-three, will reprise his role at the Olivier Theatre in London and later Cardiff's Wales Millennium Centre. The Welsh actor described Bevan's life, from growing up in Tredegar, a mining town in South Wales, to becoming the minister for health in the post-war government as 'extraordinary'. Bevan had a stammer but became known for the strength of his speaking in the House of Commons. 'He's a man who becomes known for being one of the great orators of his time,' Sheen told GMB. 'And yet, he grew up a young boy in Tredegar, worked on the mines, very young and had this stammer. 'I think one of the most powerful scenes in the play is where he goes to Tredegar working men's library and learns to expand his vocabulary so that when a word comes up that he knows he's going to stammer on, he chooses another word, which is what added to that kind of extraordinary oratorical manner that he had later when he was in the Houses of Parliament.' Bevan, described as the architect of the NHS, was the minister of health in Clement Attlee's government from 1945 to 1951. In the play, as he is confronted with death, Bevan reflects on his life from humble beginnings, his bruising encounters with Winston Churchill and a final tenure as minister of labour and national service. One man's dream of the NHS 💙 #MichaelSheen reprises his role as #NyeBevan in this epic Welsh fantasia, written by #TimPrice and 'vividly directed' (★★★★ Times) by #RufusNorris. Playing in the #OlivierTheatre from 3 July and @theCentre from 22 August. — National Theatre (@NationalTheatre) May 28, 2025 Asked how he got into the role of Bevan, Sheen said: 'I put on a bit of weight, as you can see.' He added: 'It's a very physical performance; I'm barefoot all the way through it.' Sheen launched a theatre company called Welsh National Theatre earlier this year. The organisation is envisioned as separate from but complementary to Theatr Cymru, which was established in 2003 as the Welsh language national company. National Theatre Wales closed its doors in its current form as a theatre company in December, after funding was withdrawn in 2023, which Sheen said was when he went into rehearsals for Nye. He said: 'We were looking at possibly our country not having its own national theatre. 'So, as a result of doing this play Nye and seeing how successful it was, how the audience really responded to it, particularly in Wales … but seeing that appetite was what kind of made me think, yeah, we can do this. Why not?' Nye returns to the Olivier Theatre on Thursday.
