Woman, 24, spends thousands on her 1980s obsession

Daily Mail18-07-2025
A woman obsessed with the 1980s who has spent thousands on buying items from the decade has clapped back at haters.
Violet Sky, 24, a singer from New York City, explained exclusively to the Daily Mail her fascination with the '80s began in 2016 after she watched the 1985 film Girls Just Want to Have Fun starring Sarah Jessica Parker.
'In that moment I was drawn to it all, the bold and daring fashion, the hair, and the synthesizers in the music,' she dished. 'Nothing was too much and I think it brought an element of fun to pop culture that's different than the minimalism of today which I appreciate.'
She now tries to live every day like she's in the 1980s, dressing in vintage clothing, driving an old Camaro, and transforming her entire room to look like it's from the decade.
But the endeavor has not been cheap, as the budding musician confessed that she's spent 'thousands' to recreate the 1980s.
'I [constantly] incorporate elements [from the '80s] into my life,' she explained. 'I have a perm, I wear only 80s vintage clothing, and I collect physical media (vinyl, VHS).
'I dress all '80s, every day, my room is all '80s... and my future apartment is going to have it all.
'[I've spent] thousands I'm sure. But that's over a 10-year period. I built my wardrobe and record collection up over that time.
'The money I put into pressing my upcoming '80s album onto vinyl has been an investment. Not to mention my 1992 Camaro too, which was a big purchase!'
Unfortunately, Violet confessed that she often get 'stares' from people in public and has been subjected to a slew of hate online.
But she is completely unbothered by the negative comments.
'I do get hate online, but I think that comes with the territory of putting yourself out there anywhere,' she explained.
'The way I look at it is whatever hateful thing these people say is a direct reflection of how they feel about themselves.
'People do stare at me in public, but it's never really been in a negative way.
'Since I'm from NYC, I think people are used to seeing eccentric fashion so it's not too surprising to them.
'Either way, dressing this way makes me happy and that's what matters most.'
Violet documents her 1980s lifestyle on TikTok and Instagram, where she has 332,000 and 106,000 followers respectively.
She has now turned her obsession into a career, as she has been releasing 'authentic '80s music' over the last few years.
She joined forces with the synth player from the band Shy Talk, and he let her record vocals on 'some old demos he had produced in the '80s'.
'We changed nothing about the songs, so everything you hear when you listen to my music was actually created back then, the only new thing being my vocals,' Violet explained.
Wow: She joined forces with the synth player from the band Shy Talk, and he let her record vocals on 'some old demos he had produced in the '80s'
'This project has aligned with my life perfectly as it's a blend of archiving the old but also getting to be a part of it as a performer as well, and work with musicians who inspired me.
'Other than my music, I'm a vinyl DJ, content creator, and I manage a vintage clothing store in NYC.'
In the end, she hopes that being so open about her lifestyle with inspire others to embrace whatever makes them happy - even if some people might think it's weird.
'People are going to judge and critique you no matter what you do, but what matters most is how you feel about yourself,' she concluded.
'The '80s and the way I live my life makes me happy, and no one can take that away from me!'

And Just Like That... Sex and the City reboot will end with third season

And Just Like That..., the reboot of 90s and early noughties show Sex and the City, will come to a close after its third season, HBO has runner Michael Patrick King shared the news on Instagram, saying that as he wrote the last episode, "It became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop."Named after its heroine Carrie Bradshaw's catchphrase, the series followed its characters' lives, clothes and romances in New York in their 50s.A two-part finale is yet to air and King said he and Sarah-Jessica Parker, who plays Bradshaw, "held off announcing the news until now because we didn't want the word 'final' to overshadow the fun of watching the season". Parker, known as SJP, shared a poem and photo montage in honour of "this chapter complete" on Instagram. Her co-star Kristin Davis, who plays Charlotte York, posted "I am profoundly sad."The franchise, originally based on books by Candace Bushnell, has already been made into two films. But King clarified that, "The ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end," denying fans the hope of another spin-off. Viewership has progressively declined over the three seasons, according to Samba TV, a viewing data tracker. Its first episode saw 1.1 million US households tune in, with the latest generating less than half of that initial has plagued the reboot, in particular regarding its cast's diversification. Elle magazine wrote that the "attempts to diversify fell flat" while The Guardian called it a "heavy-handed overcompensation" that was "atoning for SATC's history of racial cluelessness".Apparent plot holes have also been spotted by viewers - including the father of one of the main characters seemingly dying twice. Star of iconic 80s action blockbusters is unrecognizable in rare sighting... can you guess who he is?

An actor who starred in a string of iconic 1980s blockbusters was unrecognizable during a rare public sighting this week. At the peak of his fame, he was known for his collaborations with a director who went on to make two of the highest-grossing pictures of all time. In the 1990s, he acted alongside famous faces ranging from Charlie Sheen and Nicolas Cage to Angelina Jolie and Kurt Russell. He cut a distinguished figure when he surfaced in sweltering Los Angeles this Thursday - the day he celebrated his 69th birthday. The actor wore a casually stylish ensemble of a black t-shirt and matching jeans when he was glimpsed emerging from a supermarket. Can you guess who he is? He is none other than Michael Biehn, known to 1980s sci-fi fans as leading man Sgt. Kyle Reese in The Terminator and supporting character Cpl. Dwayne Hicks in Aliens. In The Terminator, Kyle Reese is a soldier in the resistance against a futuristic AI takeover, and enlists in a time-travel mission to stop Arnold Schwarzenegger's title character from murdering Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor. Aliens saw Michael cast opposite Sigourney Weaver, as members of a space crew desperately trying to survive an onslaught by malign extraterrestrials. Both movies were helmed by James Cameron, who directed Michael again in the 1989 sci-fi thriller The Abyss, featuring him alongside Ed Harris. Michael also briefly appeared as Kyle in the director's cut of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, in a scene that was cut from the theatrical version. Born in Alabama in 1958, Michael landed his film debut with an uncredited bit part in the 1978 film Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Three years later, he played his breakthrough part in the thriller The Fan, leading the film as murderous super-fan stalking a stage actress played by Lauren Bacall. After his sci-fi successes of the 1980s, Michael acted in the 1990s with Charlie Sheen in Navy SEALs, Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer in Tombstone, Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage in The Rock and Angelina Jolie in Mojave Moon. He cut a distinguished figure when he surfaced in sweltering Los Angeles this Thursday - the day he celebrated his 69th birthday However his career fizzled during that decade and he descended into a period of alcoholism that ended when he went on the wagon in 2008. Reflecting on his past work in a 2019 interview, he said: 'People always talk about me being an '80s star. I was not an '80s star. Bruce Willis was an '80s star. Tom Cruise was an '80s star. Schwarzenegger and Stallone. Mel Gibson. Those guys were making $20 million [a picture]. I never even got $1 million. I kind of liked it that way.' He noted: 'I have five boys and that was always important to me that I was going to be closer to them than I was to the movie business,' via The Hollywood Reporter. Michael welcomed his sons over the course of three marriages, the most recent of which is to actress Jennifer Blanc, whom he married in 2015 and is with to this day. 'The amount of movies Bruce Willis makes,' Michael said in 2019: 'I don't see how you can live a normal life where you see your kids all the time, you're taking them to school and baseball practice and you're coaching their teams. You're in their lives.' James Cameron observed: 'Maybe what held Michael back was that he didn't like playing the Hollywood game — schmoozing people and all that. For him it was all about the work. And also the path to stardom is capricious, and can turn on a single choice. Every time you take a part the road forks.' The director reflected: 'Major stardom passed him by, but that's not the point. He's done great work in many films over the years, and is well loved and respected for a few iconic characters. Who can forget Johnny Ringo in Tombstone?'
