'This is a first-of-its-kind step in the state. We don't have a precedent. We are studying the Amaravati model and others. Careful study needs to be done before we begin the process,' Chandran said.
Discussions will also have to be held with the IT and revenue departments, as well as the district collector to hammer out the nitty-gritties of the procedure, he said. 'However, the fact we have got the green signal is a big step forward in terms of the Infopark Phase III project. Envisaged as a township it is a prestigious project for the city and also much-needed, since we have a queue of companies wanting to set up offices at the IT park,' Chandran said.
In the 10 years encompassing two tenures of Pinarayi Vijayan government, 352 new firms launched their offices in Phases I and II, creating over 73,500 jobs, said an Infopark official.
The city's IT sector has seen a steady growth since the inception of Infopark, from 100 acres with four companies in 2004 to 583 companies in 2025 -- tech giant IBM Software's Ecosystem Incubation Centre (EIC) being the latest entry. Started as a small unit providing employment to close to 100 people, IBM has grown exponentially in the last three years to grant jobs to over 35,000 IT professionals.

Edappally-Aroor elevated highway to pass above metro viaduct: DPR
KOCHI: The proposed flyover at Palarivattom bypass Junction, to be constructed as part of the Edappally-Aroor elevated highway, will pass above the Kochi Metro viaduct, according to the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by the project consultant to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). 'As per the revised DPR, the flyover is now slated to come up above the metro viaduct of the Pink Line, the construction of which is progressing in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium-Infopark stretch. The flyover is proposed to be constructed at a height of 32m above the existing flyover there and the upcoming metro viaduct,' a senior NHAI official said. The project consultant, Bhopal-based Highway Engineering Consultants Ltd, submitted the DPR early this year, but it failed to take into account the viaduct. The NHAI then asked the consultant to revise the alignment and submit the DPR within a month. However, it finally prepared the report after a delay of nearly five months. As per the initial report, the project was expected to cost Rs 3,600 crore and would be built parallel to the existing NH 66 bypass section. However, the NHAI is studying the revised DPR and is yet to give final consent. According to sources, the project cost is expected to further rise, but the final estimation will be done only after the NHAI approval. 'The project is being planned in a way so as to fit within the existing ROW (Right Of Way). Hence, there is no need for additional land acquisition, except small areas at the start and end points,' the official said. Metro viaduct The metro viaduct of the under-construction second phase, connecting JLN stadium with Infopark, passes above the Palarivattom flyover. It is the highest point in the 11.17-km long Pink Line, which has 11 stations – Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium, Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Padamughal, Civil Station Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukara, Kinfra and Infopark. 'It will be one of the highest sections of Phase-2. A special steel span of 60m will be constructed to facilitate the viaduct above the flyover,' said a KMRL official.

GCDA staff association protests move to hand over land to registration department
Kochi: Employees' associations initiated protests against Greater Cochin Development Authority's (GCDA) decision to hand over 15 cents owned by the agency to the registration department. The association demanded that when leasing out GCDA's land to others, adequate rentals should be charged. Leaders of GCDA staff association, a pro-Congress union, wrote to the GCDA secretary regarding this issue. "It is learnt that there is a plan to hand over 15 cents of land owned by GCDA near Kadavanthra police station to the registration department. GCDA, being an agency that operates using its own funds, handing over the assets will affect day-to-day operations. GCDA does not receive any grant or financial support from govt. Therefore, land transactions should be conducted only after obtaining market value. Otherwise, the move to hand over the land should be scrapped," the association stated. Moreover, the plan to give various local bodies Rs 1 crore each to develop or construct infrastructure facilities within the holdings in such civic bodies' limits should also be reconsidered. The financial condition of GCDA is not satisfactory. Thus, providing financial support to the local bodies will affect GCDA's day-to-day activities, the association leaders said.
