Apple to expand digital car key feature to more brands
Apple wants you to ditch your car keys. The world's third-largest company announced it's expanding the Apple Wallet car key support to include even more automakers. That means more drivers will soon be able to lock, unlock, and even start their cars directly from their iPhones.
And some drivers will be able to ditch their clunky keys and fobs. Apple first launched digital car keys in 2020, but until now, the feature was limited to a handful of high-end vehicles from specific brands.
Acura, Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC are joining the lineup in the US, bringing the total number of global partner brands to 13, Apple said on Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC.
Until now, the feature was only in cars produced by luxury automakers like Volvo, Genesis, Rivian, Audi, and BMW — and only in some of their products. Hyundai and Kia were the only budget-friendly options in the original rollout.
Apple didn't say exactly when the feature will be available in new cars, only saying the launch was coming 'soon.' A representative didn't immediately respond to DailyMail.com's request for comment.
It's a move that continues Apple's slow but deliberate push into the auto industry. Between 2014 and 2024, the company spent billions attempting to develop an Apple Car, codenamed 'Project Titan .' But after 10 years in the lab, Apple cancelled the project last year .
Instead, the tech giant has poured millions of dollars into developing its popular phone-mirroring system that projects apps and widgets onto car screens, called Apple CarPlay. The investment shows the tech giant is clearly interested in becoming the digital interface for the modern vehicle.
Apple also unveiled a new look and feel for soon-to-launch CarPlay updates. The company teased a redesigned version of the system with its controversial Liquid Glass aesthetic, interactive tiles, and new standby widgets that keep things like clocks and calendar events visible while the car idles.
Not every automaker is on board with Apple's vision for the dashboard. The CarPlay update has faced a surprising amount of resistance in the automotive sector. General Motors — which owns Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC — has already started phasing out Apple CarPlay in its new electric vehicles.
Instead of mirroring your iPhone, GM's EVs now run on Ultifi, its in-house software platform. The company has poured millions into developing the system as part of a broader strategy to control the user experience — and the valuable data that comes with it.
And GM isn't alone. Some of the biggest names in the EV world, including Tesla and Rivian , have never supported CarPlay. These automakers are betting that drivers will adapt to native systems that are more tightly integrated with the car itself.

Echo Pop speakers now £5.55 for Amazon Prime Day if shoppers do one thing
Echo Pop speakers now £5.55 for Amazon Prime Day if shoppers do one thing Arguably one of the most versatile of Amazon's own-brand devices, the Echo Pop is now by far one of the cheapest The Echo Pop falls to a much cheaper price when you combine the two sales (Image: Amazon ) The biggest Amazon sale of the year has launched with a bang and, for bargain hunters keen to snap up gadgets, it offers huge savings on all kinds of home and personal tech upgrades. Shoppers are already snapping up huge deals for Amazon Prime Day, which runs until 11.59pm on July 11, on everything from Apple Airpods to the ASUS Rog Ally which is now 42% off the RRP and at its lowest ever price. However, between bargain power banks and air fryers, the best discounts on electronics tend to be saved for Amazon's own devices. While this year's Prime Day has already seen significant price cuts on Kindles (39%), tablets (43%) and Ring doorbells (50%), some of the biggest deals are on Alexa devices. Alexa smart home devices have become a staple in millions of homes since the Echo's debut in time for Black Friday 2014, with Amazon claiming the tech has picked up 'tens of thousands' of skills over the years, from playing music, audiobooks and podcasts to controlling compatible smart home devices like plugs or lights, all of which can be done hands free with Alexa voice control. Alexa can set timers, check the weather, place Amazon orders, answer questions and more. While Alexa is hugely popular in British homes, there are several big-name alternatives available for UK shoppers. Google Nest devices incorporate Google Assistant, while Apple Homepods are powered by Siri and integrate well with other Apple devices. While specs vary and Apple inevitably integrates better with iPhones and iPads, both devices come in at a higher price point even before factoring in that the Google Nest requires a home hub to connect relevant device. In comparison, one of the smallest and most versatile of Amazon's smart speaker range, the Echo Pop normally costs £44.99 but has been reduced to £20.99 for the Prime Day. While the 53% discount is already hefty, savvy shoppers have found a way to get one for less than £6 - working out an 88% saving on the usual price. Bargain hunters who sign up with money saving website TopCashback can get a free £15 new member sign up bonus payable on their first purchase through a qualifying website, alongside a percentage back of every qualifying spend. For shoppers using the sign up link to buy an Echo Pop, after cashback the high-tech speaker effectively will end up costing £5.55, which works out even cheaper than Black Friday. The tiny smart speaker uses Alexa to answer queries (Image: Amazon ) The popular Wi-Fi and Bluetooth smart speaker comes in four different colours and has a speaker that delivers full sound ideal for smaller spaces. There are now more than 19,000 reviews of the Echo Pop on Amazon now, with an average rating of 4.7 out of five stars. 82% of all shoppers gave the gadget a 5 star review, with reviewers praising the design and sound quality of the Pop, along with the ease of setup. One shopper said: "So many uses. Super handy. Great sound quality." They added: "Looks nice and neat. Great volume for a cheaper smaller model. I haven't noticed any difference in sound quality than our more expensive Alexa. Is perfect for so many uses. Door bell, listening to the radio/ music/ audio books, we have them set up with routines so they play at certain times of day to tell the time, weather, flash news briefing and radio for the morning, then nice chilled music in the evening to unwind. Brilliant, no issues." Another added: " The device is fully functional and very easy to use. Alexa is responsive to voice commands, and the speaker quality is decent for everyday use. My main concern is that it has to be plugged in at all times to work, which limits portability. However, this does eliminate any worry about battery life. Overall, it's a great device for the price and offers good value for money." A four-star reviewer said: "I've been using the Echo Pop for a few weeks now, and it's exceeded my expectations for such a small and affordable smart speaker! It's compact, looks great in charcoal, and does a fantastic job as both a Bluetooth speaker and a smart device with Alexa built in. There are a few areas for improvement, but overall, it's a solid addition to my home setup." However, they added: "While the sound quality is good, the bass is limited due to its compact size. It's fine for casual music listening and spoken audio, but if you're a bass lover or want rich, deep sound, you might find it lacking compared to larger speakers in the Echo line. "This speaker does a great job in small or medium rooms, but it struggles a bit in larger spaces. It doesn't quite have the power to fill a big room, so it's best suited for personal or smaller spaces." The Echo Pop is not the only Alexa device discounted in the sale. The Echo Spot alarm clock is reduced to £49.99, saving 38%. Meanwhile the Echo Show 8 is 40% off and now currently £89.99. Fifa opens office in Trump Tower, deepening ties with US president
Fifa's relationship with US president Donald Trump now has a physically tangible marker, with soccer's world governing body announcing that it has opened an office at Trump Tower in New York City. The announcement of the new office opening came on Monday evening, after Fifa placed the Club World Cup trophy on display in the lobby of the skyscraper on the south-west corner of Central Park in an event attended by several Fifa dignitaries including its president Gianni Infantino, the Brazilian great Ronaldo and Eric Trump, the son of the US president and executive vice-president of the Trump Organization. 'Fifa [is] a global organisation [and] to be global, you have to be local, you have to be everywhere, so we have to be in New York – not just for the Fifa Club World Cup this year and the Fifa World Cup next year – we have to be in New York as well when it comes to where our offices are based,' Infantino said. 'Thank you, Eric [Trump], thank you to everyone. Thanks, of course, to president Trump as well.' Fifa did not provide specifics on which staff or departments would be housed in the office, which makes the federation a tenant of the company owned by the sitting US president with a year to the start of its biggest and most lucrative tournament. The opening of the Trump Tower location follows Fifa's 2024 opening of an office in Miami, Florida, which houses the organization's legal division and some staff responsible for putting on the Club World Cup and next year's World Cup. Some staff from Fifa's global headquarters in Zurich were relocated to the United States to work in the latter office. 'On behalf of myself, on behalf of New York, on behalf of the Trump Organization and everybody that works in this building – we love you,' Eric Trump said in remarks at the event. 'We're honoured, we're excited about all the things that Fifa is doing.' The office opening continues Fifa's and Infantino's efforts to appear publicly close to the US president, with Infantino describing his relationship with Trump as 'absolutely crucial' in a meeting with the International Football Association Board (Ifab) in February. Infantino has since appeared with the US president at several public events, including at the Oval Office when announcing the creation of a World Cup task force. In that meeting, Infantino presented Trump with the Club World Cup trophy, which has continued to be on display in the Oval Office for all of the president's scheduled events in the space. Infantino was later present at the first public meeting of the World Cup taskforce, at which he was seated alongside Trump with vice-president JD Vance. Sign up to Soccer with Jonathan Wilson Jonathan Wilson brings expert analysis on the biggest stories from European soccer after newsletter promotion Infantino also accompanied Trump to the Middle East this year – a trip that made him late for the Fifa congress in Paraguay, angering Fifa delegates who walked out of the gathering in protest. Uefa later accused Infantino of putting 'private political interests' ahead of his Fifa responsibilities, and Human Rights Watch demanded that Infantino reveal the specific purpose and details of his trip, which he has yet to do. 'As president of Fifa my responsibility is to make decisions in the interests of the organisation,' Infantino said at the congress, where he apologized for his tardyness. 'I felt that I needed to be there to represent football and all of you.'

Wendy's CEO Kirk Tanner jumps ship to Hershey as top boss
July 8 (Reuters) - Wendy's (WEN.O), opens new tab said on Tuesday its CEO Kirk Tanner was leaving the burger chain after just over a year in the role to take on the top job at chocolate maker Hershey (HSY.N), opens new tab. For Wendy's, the change at the top comes at a time when it has been grappling with muted sales as macroeconomic volatility pushes more people to eat at home. Its stock is down nearly 31% this year. Hershey had announced in January that Michele Buck, who had been CEO for over seven years, would retire in 2026 and would transition to a senior advisor role once a replacement was named. Tanner will take over on August 18. He will depart Wendy's on July 18, the burger chain said in a separate statement, adding that it has appointed its CFO, Ken Cook, as interim chief. Wendy's also said it has launched a comprehensive search process to select a permanent CEO, and is set to report its second quarter results on August 8. Hershey is expected to report on July 30. Mary Kay Haben, chair of the Hershey CEO search committee, said that "(Tanner's) deep experience in snacks, beverages, M&A and innovation — combined with public company CEO and board roles — makes him well suited to lead Hershey into the future." Tanner joins the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups maker as it navigates higher tariff-related costs and still-high cocoa prices amid growing uncertainty around consumer spending. He was previously a top executive at PepsiCo (PEP.O), opens new tab before moving to head Wendy's in February 2024. Shares of Hershey fell about 2% in early trading, while Wendy's was down around 1%.
