St Thomas Mt to be key S Chennai hub
Chennai: To streamline operations and eliminate mid-journey transfers, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is extending corridor five from Alandur to St Thomas Mount with a new 1.25km elevated viaduct.
The new link, running parallel to the existing elevated structure, will have two tacks for up trains and two for down — transforming Mount into a full-scale interchange between corridors two (St Thomas Mount-Chennai Central) and five (Madhavaram-Sholinganallur).
As per the original plan, commuters travelling from Madhavaram towards southern suburbs such as Madipakkam, Medavakkam, or Sholinganallur had to get down at Alandur and board another train to continue.
With the revised alignment, trains can now run uninterrupted.

To make space for this expanded alignment, CMRL acquired additional land and will also demolish portions of corridor two infrastructure near Railway Station Road, adjusting curves to accommodate the new link, said T Archunan, director (projects), CMRL. He also mentioned that a new building and passenger facilities will come up at Mount on vacant land, establishing it as a key southern transit node, on par with Alandur.

The project gains greater significance as St Thomas Mount is also set to connect with the MRTS network, though the last leg from Velachery has remained incomplete for more than a decade. Commuters welcomed CMRL's initiative but criticised
Southern Railway
for the stagnation.
"CMRL is working with long-term passenger convenience in mind. But Southern Railway has left the MRTS stretch hanging for years," said V Shankar, a Velachery commuter.
"If MRTS was handed over to CMRL, it would've been completed by now."
Southern Railway said in the past that delays on the Velachery–Mount MRTS leg were due to metro work. CMRL officials, however, said that all related metro work on that stretch near Thillai Ganga Nagar and Mount was completed long ago, and that the delay is unrelated to their operations.
With CMRL targeting a 2026 launch for corridor five, commuters hope that if the MRTS leg is handed over in time, both networks could open together, finally bridging one of the city's most stubborn connectivity gaps.

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh govt on Friday signed more than 80 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with leading international and domestic investors in the private tourism sector, amounting to 10,328 crore. The MoUs were formalized in the presence of chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the AP Tourism Tech AI 2.0 conclave here. These partnerships are expected to generate employment for 22,325 people and add 7,600 new hotel room keys across the state over the next four years. Naidu announced plans for robust tourism infrastructure, including a domestic airport in Madanapalle of Annamayya district. He extended an invitation to Patanjali Ayurved, led by Baba Ramdev, to develop a world-class wellness centre at Horsley Hills in Annamayya district, and proposed Baba Ramdev serve as a tourism advisor to the govt. Reaffirming tourism as a transformative force, Naidu remarked that while ideologies like socialism, capitalism, and communism may fade, "tourism will be the only 'ism' to endure", calling it a catalyst for sustainable growth. With a vision to evolve into a $2.4 trillion economy under the Swarnandhra @2047 blueprint, Naidu said the state aims for a 20% growth rate in tourism, scaling its contribution to the GSDP from 74,000 crore to 2.4 lakh crore by 2028-29. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cuối cùng, chơi miễn phí game chiến thuật hay nhất 2025! Chennai: Longer waiting time to park or exit vehicles in Metro Rail stations
Parking vehicles in the morning or taking it out in the evening during peak hours, commuters endure a bit of a hassle in some of the Chennai Metro Rail stations. Chennai Metro Rail network sprawls to 54 km currently handles nearly 2.8 lakh passengers on an average every day. A significant number of commuters resort to driving to the stations by two-wheelers or four wheelers and then hop onto the train due to absence of last mile connectivity options. Recently, in a few stations including Koyambedu, Thirumangalam, Airport and Alandur, congestion near the parking was noticed and commuters had to wait in queue for a while entering or exiting the parking lot, thus causing inconvenience. Manoharan Nambiar, a resident of Thirumangalam said, 'The payment machine in the parking lot takes a while to read the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for some commuters. As a result, there is bunching of vehicles which are either waiting to enter the station or exit in the evening during the peak hours. I have got caught in the queue on quite a few occasions and have had to wait to exit the Thirumangalam Metro Rail station parking lot in the evening. I hope the authorities provide additional machines to ease congestion.' Also, for some of the commuters, when they exit, the time of entry doesn't reflect in the payment machine. For a few, though they have exited, the machine indicates that the vehicle still lies within the parking lot. According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the issue has been occurring recently, and they have already taken steps to resolve it. 'The payment device has a sim card with which there are data synchronisation issues. We have already raised with SBI and Airtel and it will be sorted out within a few days,' an official said. Sources said, there is dearth of manpower to oversee the parking related issues and that CMRL should hire additional staff. This will help in addressing the issue quickly.
