By the time he was cast in 1981's Chariots of Fire, Havers was a familiar face on British television. Here, he got to play his first lord – Cambridge student Lord Andrew Lindsay – and run, barefooted and in slow motion, across West Sands beach in St Andrews, earning him a Bafta nomination in the process. Roles soon followed as the public school-educated but class-conscious Ronnie Heaslop in 1984 epic period drama A Passage to India, and as father figure Dr Rawlins in Steven Spielberg's 1987 war film Empire of the Sun. He also plays David Niven in 2004's The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.
Havers has spent the most recent part of his career on television, continuing the well-educated/peerage theme. His roles as lords (we count four) include Lord Hepworth in Downton Abbey and his portrayal of the beaten-down-by-the-bad-guys Lord Whitecroft in Guy Ritchie's 2024 Netflix series, The Gentleman – one of his most 'is it Nigel or is he acting?' parts to date. As doctors (we count five), he most famously played Dr Tom Latimer in all six series of the 80s BBC sitcom Don't Wait Up, and as Dr Jonathan Paige in ITV medical drama, Dangerfield. This February, he played his own grandfather, Sir Cecil Havers QC, in ITV drama A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story. He was gentleman escort Lewis Archer in Coronation Street for a decade. And you might also have caught him on stage in Art and Noel Coward comedy Private Lives, and in panto in Dick Whittington, Aladdin, Jack and The Beanstalk or more.
With a penchant for everything from the gee-gees to the ladies to, erm, going to the tip on a Sunday, there's plenty to ask Havers as he sits for the Guardian reader interview. He's certainly in the mood to chat, as he's currently halfway through his first ever live tour – Nigel Havers Talking Bollocks – where he promises to … well, the clue seems to be in the title. But is he really Too Posh to be Privileged, like those adverts he did in the 2000s?

'EastEnders can do Avani's pregnancy story justice - here's why I hope they don't stray'
The Panesars are involved in yet another hard hitting storyline on BBC's EastEnders - as last week it was revealed 16-year-old Avani Nandra Hart had fallen pregnant It was an emotional week on EastEnders last week as Avani Nandra-Hart found out she was pregnant with teenage villain Joel's child. Those eager fans (like myself) who love to dig into the spoilers every Tuesday were aware of the storyline before it had aired. However, for those who wanted to keep it a surprise, the shock revelation came last week when she took a pregnancy test in front of Barney Mitchell. Avani was adamant she was going to have an abortion - but grandmother Suki has other ideas. As I was scrolling through X, formerly known as Twitter, when the spoilers were released, I noticed a number of people calling the teen pregnancy storyline "repetitive" and "boring," however, I disagree. Yes, EastEnders have showcased a number of teen pregnancy storylines – including Lily Slater, who fell pregnant at just 12 years old. In the earlier days, Sonia fell pregnant at 15 with Martin Fowler 's baby, unaware of her pregnancy when she went into labour. However, as a British Indian like the Panesars – I'm glad they're shedding ligh on a taboo subject in the community. Despite Avani, understandably, not wanting any of her family to find out – Suki put two and two together after seeing her searching up abortions on her laptop. Suki's initial reaction was heartwarming, as she told her granddaughter she was there if she needed to talk to someone. Despite the obvious initial shock, Suki remained cool, calm and collected, advising Avani she needed to speak to her parents. I was really glad to see this, as a number of teenagers in the same position as Avani would do all they can to hide their pregnancy from their family, especially the older generation in fear of how they would react. In many cases, this would mean they'd go through the scary situation alone and I hope Suki's initial reaction helps them realise that they don't have to be alone. However, things took a turn in tonight's episode, when Suki went to visit a Granthi for advice – telling him her granddaughter was "in turmoil." The Granthi then told Suki that all she can do is support her granddaughter – as he warned her she could face a similar outcome with Avani if she pushes her not to have the abortion. She later went home, and shockingly told Avani she would raise the baby as her own, with many complaints on social media. For me, I would have loved to see Suki have another heart-to-heart with Avani after speaking to the Granthi – but instead she came up with an outrageous idea. Trying to push Avani not to have an abortion - Suki said she would raise the child as her own. I hope this is just Suki reacting with panic, and Eve talks some sense into her. If EastEnders continue to stray with an unrealistic storyline, I fear this could push those in a similar situation one step back, rather than helping them to confide in their families or get help elsewhere. In addition to this - Suki trying to control Avani's decision and not supporting her in what she wants to do may also give off the same message. I'd love to see Suki playing the supportive grandma role it looked like she was about to play at the start. Hopefully after she calms down, she comes to her senses and we see the character we've all grown to love in recent years. Viewers are also yet to see Ravi's reaction, and with his hot head, it's almost expected he's going to lose the plot. However, we have seen a softer side of Ravi, especially after Avani was strip searched by the police. We saw a softer side of Ravi during that ordeal, and I'm hoping that's the side we see if and when he finally finds out about his daughter's pregnancy, as I believe it will encourage many others who find themselves in that position to speak up. The soap has a great chance to portray this in a way that can help others, like they have done with similar storylines before. Suki herself was involved in a huge storyline, as herself and Eve became the first lesbian couple to wed on the Sqaure. It came after Suki escaped her abusive ex-husband Nish Panesar – which was an extremely sensitive story, handled in exactly the right way. The Panesars have been a great addition to EastEnders – and a great representation for the South Asian community. They've tackled a number of taboo subjects, and I'm hopeful this will continue far into the future. I'm interested to see what turn the storyline takes and I'm sure EastEnders will do it justice. I'm just hoping they don't take a wrong turn.

Emmerdale John Sugden clues tease villain will finally be exposed very soon
Emmerdale's latest episodes appear to be gearing towards the end of killer John Sugden, almost a year on from his debut on the ITV soap with some hints to his downfall It can only be a matter of time before Emmerdale villain John Sugden is finally exposed to the village. Nate Robinson's murderer has managed to remain undetected despite a number of mistakes and some shifty behaviour. John killed Nate by accident before dumping his body in the lake and then using Nate's phone to pretend he'd simply moved on, cutting his family out of his life. As well as almost framing Nate's wife Tracy for the death when his body was found, John said nothing and acted like he hadn't just murdered someone for months. While the guilt is slowly eating away at him now, he's allowed another person, Owen, to die instead of saving him. This week he framed patient Owen with a faked confession regarding Nate's demise. He filled the confession and suicide note with so much detail only the killer would know, while spoilers have teased an alibi could jeopardise John's dark plan. Amid this he's struggling to cope with his actions, confiding in a volunteer at an online helpline about his guilt. He has no idea though that it's Paddy Kirk, father figure of John's husband Aaron Dingle, that he is speaking with. John's also sparked suspicion with his brother Robert Sugden, who is onto him as it is. But new information about John being at Owen's house before he died has sent Robert's mind whirling. Robert has no idea just how far John's crimes go though, with him orchestrating a harassment campaign against Chas Dingle and Liam Cavanagh all to get closer to them and be the hero, framing Ella Forster in the process. John also triggered a number of events, while also being in the right place at the right time too. He left Cain Dingle in serious danger recently with everyone thinking he'd simply drunk too much alcohol and collapsed, with John actually to blame. He deliberately caused Jacob Gallagher to have an allergic reaction by switching their coffees, all so he could save Jacob and again be the hero. He attacked Liam believing it was Mack Boyd before then saving him, while his feud with Mack also led to him deliberately causing the slurry leak at the farm to frame his enemy. This worked, and Mack's sister Moira is still at risk of losing her home and the farm, due to fines and losses in finances. John spiked Chas at one point before saving her, also rescuing Ruby Miligan from the barn fire and saving Moira then too just moments after killing Nate. Each time he has done something, his actions have alarmed fans given how careless he can be with the "clean-up" whether that be covering his tracks, disposing of evidence or framing someone. Robert learns about the Jacob incident next week, already onto John about Nate and Owen's apparent crime. Whether anyone listens to Robert remains to be seen though, but fans believe John's husband Aaron is now onto him after catching him burning his medical supplies. Mack was also onto John at one point and has refused to get involved since. But this hasn't stopped fans thinking Mack and Robert will soon join forces to expose John, with Mack's mystery flashforward still not aired. Claudette Anderson also knows about John visiting Owen, so perhaps she may look into matters, and then there's Liam who wasn't John's biggest fan previously. All it's going to take is a current ally to turn on John, whether they work with Robert or not. Then there's Paddy who we now know is John's mystery confidant - so will John get a little too vocal and end up giving away what he's done to Paddy? What if Ella was to return and find a way to prove her innocence? Will they ever question who really attacked Liam all those weeks ago, and will Aidan awake from his coma again and finally expose what John did to him? With there being such a focus on a huge September plot and new characters Kev, Celia and Ray, all tipped to be baddies, surely the currently village baddie John is on his way out. With so many people now questioning him and Robert keen to expose him for once and for all, not to mention John's lies so close to unraveling in more ways than one, it's certainly paving the way for him to be rumbled and a comeuppance could be imminent.

EXCLUSIVE: Emmerdale star reveals scenes were 'cut' at last minute before being brutally killed off
Emmerdale star Simon Haines says some of his scenes were 'cut' before he had even started filming. The actor made three appearances on the ITV soap in July as the character of Owen Michaels and was seen on a date with Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), but things took a sour turn when he spiked Robert's drink and John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) intervened. Just days later, paramedic John found Owen unresponsive at his home and instead of choosing to save him, left him to die so he could write up a note on his laptop framing him for the murder of Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter). Simon always knew his stay in the Dales was going to be short, but has now revealed that there were actually more scenes planned, explaining exclusively to the Mirror: "Yeah, we talked about it in advance with casting. Of course, the scripts always change. I think there was more Owen stuff in there, but by the time we came to do the first day shooting, it had been taken out. "I'm not sure, who knows? Probably not a second date with Robert but yeah we always knew it was going to be a sort of quick, impactful mini villain storyline." However, Simon was ultimately happy with his short run on the show, and explained: "It felt really good because I knew that I had other projects that were coming up and was sort of limited with availability and it was just a great chance to be a part of something so iconic, have a big impact and then get out." Fans are now convinced that they know how killer John will get his comeuppance, and even Simon thinks John 'tying himself in knots' now that things are starting to come to a head, but is not convinced that a return for himself is outside of the realms of possibility in soapland, as he teased: "I think so. I think John is tying himself in knots now. Ollie, on my last day, was like 'You never know, there could be a twin brother or something...' So, you never know, that might not be the last you see of me." Fans know that John has been messaging someone at a helpline to offload about his guilt, with him struggling over his actions. What we found out on Wednesday was that the person he's been messaging is none other than village vet Paddy Kirk.
