Scandal! star Nolwazi Ngubeni granted bail in fraud case
Actress and casting director Nolwazi Ngubeni has been granted R5 000 bail after appearing in the Brixton Magistrate's Court in Johannesburg today.
Ngubeni is accused of financial misconduct in her engagements with Durban-based film production company Rhythm World Productions, Joburg-based Masakhane Casting Agency and Make Your Art (Pty) Ltd in March 2024.
Ngubeni faces multiple charges
She faces charges of cyber forgery, fraud, theft and uttering – which consists of illegally and intentionally passing off a forged document to actually or potentially prejudice another party.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the state alleged that the accused was hired by Rhythm World as a casting director and recruited people to perform in various productions.
'She kept money for herself'
'However, when Rhythm World paid her for the services, she allegedly kept the money for herself,' Mjondwana said.
'The NPA is committed to ensuring justice is served and will provide updates as the case progresses,' she added.
The Scandal! actress' case was postponed to 26 September for further investigations.

Her appearance earlier today follows her first appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on 26 March.
Theft allegations
According to reports, the actress is accused of pocketing R700 000 from the production of the TV series Queen Modjadji as its casting director.
Supporting actors cast in the Mzansi Magic show, which was produced by Rhythm World, allegedly complained about not being paid while Ngubeni allegedly paid herself extra.
It's alleged that the production company took legal action after her legal team's attempt to negotiate a repayment deal stalled.
The South African Film & Television Award-winning actress allegedly maintains innocence.

Durban couple die in home fire, six others escape
A couple in their 60s died after their home in Shallcross, south of Durban, caught on fire on Tuesday. Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics said they responded to calls after a house caught alight in Midmar Road at about 6.30am. AK-47 used in DJ Sumbody's murder linked to 3 more killings, including DJ Vintos
Police have linked the same AK-47 used in the high-profile murder of South African musician DJ Sumbody to more additional killings. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the AK-47 used in the killing of popular musician DJ Sumbody has now been linked to three additional murders, including that of Soweto-based Hector 'DJ Vintos' Buthelezi. Businessman Katiso Molefe, former police officer Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana appeared in the Alexander Magistrate's Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning. Three of the four men accused in the assassination of DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, now also face an additional charge related to the murder of Don Tindleni. All four are charged with DJ Vintos' murder. DJ Vintos was gunned down in March 2022 outside a nightclub in Orlando East, Soweto. Speaking outside the court, national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the suspects were traveling in a BMW X3 at the time of the shooting.

Bail denied for weeping Tiffany Meek, mother of murdered boy

On the other hand, community members have been protesting outside the court, demanding that her bail bid be denied. Tiffany has previously requested that she be granted R5,000 bail as she believes she is innocent and is being framed for the gruesome May 13 murder. Her lawyer has argued that no evidence has been presented to the court suggesting that his client could be a flight risk. On Monday, Naidoo argued that her client is innocent, and everybody wants justice for Jayden-Lee. "The learned magistrate, in her wisdom, should realise that with all the public outcry, there is no evidence that Mr Mnisi was harmed by the public. While the public is indeed angry with the applicant, why would they resort to murder? Kill the applicant and risk being also charged with murder. Everybody wants justice for Jayden-Lee, but that can only be achieved through a proper investigation and with the trial court making a determination on the matter. "In conclusion, there is no evidence before this court to even suggest that the applicant is a flight risk. In the absence of such evidence, it is submitted that the accused be released on bail as the accused has discharged the onus as a suitable candidate for bail," Naidoo stated. On Monday, the State prosecutor argued that Meek does not have a reliable address as she intends to relocate to another province, which will make things difficult for the State to take control of the case. So we are asking someone somewhere in another police station who has no interest in this matter to keep tabs on her," the State prosecutor told the court. IOL News
