: An inquiry into the irregularities surrounding Nemom Service Cooperative Bank, held as per Section 65 of Kerala Co-operative Societies Act, revealed fraud committed by members of the society's administrative panel.
The report states that the bank received investments worth Rs 112 crore and Rs 52 crore were given as loans. Most of these loans were benefited by the accused and also by people close to them. However, not even a single penny was repaid, the report said.
As per report, former secretary Balachandran Nair's wife P K Sreekala took loans worth Rs 10 lakh. A R Rajendran, who is also a former secretary, along with his wife Sreejakumari, children and son-in-law, also took loans worth lakhs of rupees.
Some of the accused took loans up to Rs 25 lakh from the bank by pledging properties. However, they soon got the documents released with the help of the then secretaries. The existing liabilities of the loans at the bank were not marked in the encumbrance certificates even as the accused took loans using the same documents from other banks.
Agricultural loans were provided only to the accused, their relatives and party members.

They took agricultural loans of Rs 10 lakh from the bank at 4% interest and deposited the money for 9.5% interest in the bank itself. They collected the interest on the deposit but did not repay the interest or the loan amount.
Even the elections of panel members did not comply with the rules, the report said. No general body meeting was held at the bank since 2018, the report added.
Using the documents of properties of people who took loans from the bank, the accused took other loans without their knowledge.
The consent of the joint registrar is required to appoint people on a contract basis at the society. But the accused appointed their kith and kin at various positions at higher salaries and the bank incurred a loss of Rs 14.21 lakh because of this. The fixed deposit (FD) receipts have to be certified by the secretary, but here even retired staff were found to have certified FD receipts.
"The report reveals grave irregularities, and the accused must be brought before the law at any cost.
Measures must be taken to provide money back to the depositors," said Santhivila Mujeeb Rahman, patron of the depositors' forum.
There are as many as six accused in the case. Former secretary of the bank S Balachandran Nair and former president R Pradeep Kumar were arrested earlier. The third and fourth accused former secretary A R Rajendran and cashier Vasanth along with two other board members are still absconding and the search has been intensified for them," said the probe team.

HYDERABAD: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy will leave for New Delhi on Monday on a two-day visit. He will be meeting Union ministers to seek approval for key projects as well as release of central funds for them. Before leaving for the national capital, the CM is expected to launch the Vana Mahotsav programme by planting saplings at Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University campus in Rajendranagar in the morning. During his stay in the national capital, he, along with officials, is expected to urge the Union ministers to expedite approvals for the Hyderabad Metro rail phase-II project, the detailed project report (DPR) of which was submitted to the Centre. Sources said the chief minister's office (CMO) has sought appointments with over half-a-dozen Union ministers on Monday and Tuesday. The CM is likely to meet Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari, seeking approval and funding for the southern corridor of the Regional Ring Road (RRR) project, and cabinet approvals for both the northern and southern corridors of the project. The Congress govt in the state has already declared the area between the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the proposed RRR as Telangana's semi-urban area, where industrial clusters would be set up. Revanth would also address the issue of the Musi rejuvenation project, industrial and defence corridors, and fertiliser supply, and seek forest and environmental clearances for various projects. The CM, along with minister D Sridhar Babu and PonnamPrabhakar, was supposed to meet Union home minister Amit Shah during his visit to Telangana recently. However, Shah, due to his busy schedule, did not meet even his party leaders who had planned a programme at the Begumpet airport. Revanth is also set to invite AICC leader Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for the public meetings to be organised in Telangana. In May, Revanth had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital and urged him to approve a dedicated channel for Telangana to attract global investments and boost exports. He also requested the issuance of a notification for the Hyderabad-Bengaluru defence corridor, support for defence and aerospace projects, approval to include Telangana in India's Semiconductor Mission, and the Union cabinet's approval and funding for Hyderabad Metro rail expansion, RRR, and the dry port greenfield corridor with dedicated railway lines around it. He met the Prime Minister immediately after the NITI Aayog meeting.

Heavy rain takes toll on pineapple farmers in Karnataka

BENGALURU: Heavy rainfall in Vazhakulam, Kerala— the country's largest pineapple-growing region — has affected harvesting and reduced the supply of pineapples to Karnataka. As a result, prices have gone up by at least 50% not just in Bengaluru but also in other districts like Mysuru, Mandya, Tumakuru, Mangaluru, and Udupi. The wholesale rates have increased from around Rs 45 per kg to Rs 80 per kg. With transportation routes blocked and waterlogged in central Kerala, traders say the volume of daily arrivals has dropped by more than half. 'Kerala's pineapples account for most of the stock we sell. But now, there's barely one or two trucks coming in. Whatever little comes is selling fast, and prices have shot up,' Ranjan M, a wholesaler in KR Market, said. Traders in Bengaluru point out that Karnataka does have limited pineapple cultivation in parts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Chikkamagaluru. According to them, the supply is neither steady nor sufficient to meet market demand. Local farmers, too, said that they have faced losses in recent weeks. 'Many of us couldn't sell our harvested stock earlier this month because there were no major festivals or wedding functions. The demand was not there. Now, with rains again affecting supply from Kerala, prices have suddenly gone up, but we have no stock left to benefit from it,' Nagappa Shankar, a farmer from Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada, said. Alternative sourcing from Tamil Nadu— including regions like Coimbatore and Nilgiris— remains limited, with traders saying production in these areas was also low this season due to poor flowering earlier in the year, and recent rainfall further affecting transportation. 'With no immediate backup and further rain is forecasted in Kerala, we are expecting the shortfall in supply to continue through the week. Prices are likely to remain high until harvesting resumes and regular movement of produce from Kerala picks up,' a trader said.
