'So who was gonna tell me that if you take your car through the car wash when it's really, really hot outside, it cracks the windshield?' she says. 'Because I was just not made aware of that.'
She flips the camera so that the viewer can see the crack.
'All the way up to the top,' she says with resignation.
Her post has inspired some debate. People can't agree on what really caused her windshield to crack.
Cracked by the Car Wash?
Automated car washes are
widely known
to exacerbate existing cracks or chips in windshields and windows. Under the right circumstances, it's also possible for a car wash to cause a crack.
The high velocity at which water is sprayed in a car wash can put enough pressure on a cracked windshield to worsen an existing crack or even shatter the glass entirely.

Another way a car wash can intensify a crack is if water and soap get trapped between the two layers of glass that make up your windshield. This can weaken the structure of the glass, making it more likely to crack or break.
According to
MS Glass Outlet
, @monsinooo was onto something when she guessed that temperature could be a factor.
A drastic difference in temperature between the weather and the water the car wash uses can cause something known as 'thermal fracturing.'
If your vehicle was baking in the sun and then suddenly goes into a car wash with frigid water, the temperature change can cause one side of the glass to shrink more rapidly than the other. If it already has a crack or a chip, that retraction may cause it to lengthen or spread.
Auto Glass Now
says that heat can 'absolutely' also cause a crack in a windshield.
This is in part because windshields and some car windows are
made of laminated glass
, rather than tempered. Tempered glass is manufactured to withstand extreme fluctuations in temperature. But it's less than ideal for vehicles because it is more prone to shatter, such as when struck by a piece of gravel on the interstate.
That's why experts recommend foregoing the car wash if you have a cracked windshield.
A Costly Wash
A cracked windshield isn't just a
safety issue
; it's a potentially significant expense.
A lot of insurance companies
cover replacing cracked windshields
. If you pay out of pocket, it could cost you several hundred dollars.
The cost depends on a number of factors, according to
AAA
.
These include your vehicle's make and model, if you go to an original equipment manufacturer or an aftermarket one, if your vehicle is equipped with any driver assistance systems, your mechanic's labor rate, and the state and city in which you live.
What Really Caused the Crack?
Although there is a possibility, albeit arguably remote, that @monsinooo's windshield cracked purely because of the temperature difference, most people in the comments weren't convinced.
'I live in Texas in triple digit heat and go through car washes all the time. Never happened to my car,' one wrote.
At least one agreed with her take, writing, "Ummm science."
A general consensus many shared was that she probably already had a defect in her windshield.
'That is not supposed to happen,' said one. 'Your window probably had a crack or indent somewhere.'
A third user implied that there may be another explanation for the crack: The car wash attendants caused it. 'So that's what they told you?' they wrote.

Tesla says it delivered its first car autonomously from factory to customer
This might be a bigger deal than the robotaxis. Tesla said it completed its first fully autonomous vehicle delivery from factory to customer. A video posted on X shows the vehicle — a Tesla Model Y — leaving the company's Austin Gigafactory, driving on the highway, passing through suburban sprawl and residential neighborhoods, before arriving at a customer's apartment building. Tesla CEO Elon Musk had promised the first fully autonomous delivery would take place June 28th. But on Friday he announced that the milestone had been achieved a day early. 'There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous!' Musk wrote on X. 'To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway.' That last part isn't accurate. Waymo has been operating fully driverless vehicles with passengers on the highway for over a year. The vehicles, which are driving on freeways in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, are only available to employees of the company, with the goal to open them up to the public at a later date. But Tesla's achievement is still notable, especially when you consider the rocky rollout of the company's robotaxi service. The robotaxis launched with safety monitors in the passenger seat with access to a kill switch, and within a few days the vehicles were recorded committing several safety lapses, including driving over the double-yellow line into the opposite lane of traffic and hard braking in the middle of the road for no apparent reason. By proving it can operate fully autonomous vehicles on highways without a safety monitor present in the vehicle, Tesla is able to demonstrate that its Full Self-Driving system is getting closer to Musk's promise of 'unsupervised' driving. The robotaxis aren't quite there yet, still requiring safety monitors and remote supervisors. That leaves Tesla in limbo between confidence that its technology can handle the driving without anyone in the vehicle, but less confident when there's a human being riding inside.

When Should You Buy Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F)?
Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) led the NYSE gainers with a relatively large price hike in the past couple of weeks. The recent rally in share prices has nudged the company in the right direction, though it still falls short of its yearly peak. With many analysts covering the large-cap stock, we may expect any price-sensitive announcements have already been factored into the stock's share price. However, what if the stock is still a bargain? Let's take a look at Ford Motor's outlook and value based on the most recent financial data to see if the opportunity still exists. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. Good news, investors! Ford Motor is still a bargain right now. Our valuation model shows that the intrinsic value for the stock is $13.76, which is above what the market is valuing the company at the moment. This indicates a potential opportunity to buy low. However, given that Ford Motor's share is fairly volatile (i.e. its price movements are magnified relative to the rest of the market) this could mean the price can sink lower, giving us another chance to buy in the future. This is based on its high beta, which is a good indicator for share price volatility. Check out our latest analysis for Ford Motor Future outlook is an important aspect when you're looking at buying a stock, especially if you are an investor looking for growth in your portfolio. Buying a great company with a robust outlook at a cheap price is always a good investment, so let's also take a look at the company's future expectations. Ford Motor's earnings growth are expected to be in the teens in the upcoming years, indicating a solid future ahead. This should lead to robust cash flows, feeding into a higher share value. Are you a shareholder? Since F is currently undervalued, it may be a great time to accumulate more of your holdings in the stock. With a positive outlook on the horizon, it seems like this growth has not yet been fully factored into the share price. However, there are also other factors such as capital structure to consider, which could explain the current undervaluation. Are you a potential investor? If you've been keeping an eye on F for a while, now might be the time to enter the stock. Its buoyant future outlook isn't fully reflected in the current share price yet, which means it's not too late to buy F. But before you make any investment decisions, consider other factors such as the strength of its balance sheet, in order to make a well-informed investment decision.
