As the country celebrates Juneteenth, here are 40 Black-owned restaurants to check out

With Juneteenth — the federal holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when the last slaves of the Confederacy were freed following the arrival of Union troops — fast approaching, many communities across the United States are especially focused on supporting Black-owned businesses. There's no reason it has to be Juneteenth for you to visit any of these establishments, but in honor of the country's newest federal holiday, here's a sample of places to try.

Axum Ethiopian Restaurant

This downtown Ethiopian eatery, located right by the Central Library, serves heaping platefuls of spongy injera flatbread topped with stews (wot) and semi-dry meat stir fries (tibs). Bar-B-Q Heaven's no-frills, all-flavor reputation has made it one of Indy's biggest names in barbecue since owner and longtime pitmaster Ronald Jones began selling barbecue outside the Frederick Douglass Park on the east side as an 11-year-old.

The mother-daughter duo of Monica and Brockelle Nelson carry on the legacy of Evansville native and longtime Indy resident George Nelson (Monica's husband and Brockelle's father), who last year was shot and killed outside the restaurant he first opened on 27th and Rader Street in 2007. Pa and Ma's, named for George and Monica, serves smoked meat and soul food in a casual family setting. Last fall the eatery appeared on an episode of Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," where celebrity chef-host Guy Fieri lauded George's chicken and dumplings.

Owner James Jones has loved barbecue and soul food since he took in the smells of nearby church potlucks as a kid growing up in downtown Indy. In 2009 he opened the first of two His Place Eateries, both of which serve James' blend of smoked meats and comfort staples like ribs ($18 to $21), chicken and dumplings ($17), collard greens grilled cheese ($18) and sweet twists on chicken and waffles like red velvet, churro and peach cobbler (around $20).

This Indianapolis institution, whose dining room has welcomed guests ranging from Shaquille O'Neal to Barack Obama, has carried on its tradition of artisanal soul food since it reopened in October 2023, three years after a 2020 fire destroyed the original Kountry Kitchen. The United States and the European Union have agreed to a trade deal setting a 15% tariff on most goods, US President Donald Trump announced, staving off higher import taxes on both sides that might have sent shockwaves through economies around the world. The announcement came after Mr Trump and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen met briefly at Mr Trump's Turnberry golf course in Scotland. Their private meeting was a culmination of months of bargaining, with the White House deadline of August 1 approaching for imposing punishing tariffs on the 27-member EU. 'It was a very interesting negotiation. I think it's going to be great for both parties,' Mr Trump said. The agreement, he said, was 'a good deal for everybody' and 'a giant deal with lots of countries'. Ms von der Leyen said the deal 'will bring stability, it will bring predictability that's very important for our businesses on both sides of the Atlantic'. Mr Trump said the EU had agreed to buy some 750 billion dollars' (£558 billion) worth of US energy and to invest 600 billion dollars (£446 billion) more in America, as well as making a major purchase of military equipment. The US leader said: 'We are agreeing that the tariff straight across for automobiles and everything else will be a straight across tariff of 15%. 'We have a tariff of 15%. We have the opening up of all of the European countries.' Ms von der Leyen said the 15% tariffs were 'across the board, all inclusive' and that 'indeed, basically the European market is open'. Before the meeting began, Mr Trump pledged to change what he characterised as 'a very one-sided transaction, very unfair to the United States'. 'I think both sides want to see fairness,' the Republican President told reporters. His EU Commission counterpart spoke of rebalancing. Ms von der Leyen said the US and EU combined have the world's largest trade volume, encompassing hundreds of millions of people and trillions of dollars. She added that Mr Trump was 'known as a tough negotiator and dealmaker'. 'But fair,' Mr Trump added. For months, Mr Trump has threatened most of the world with large tariffs in hopes of shrinking major US trade deficits with many key trading partners. More recently, he had hinted that any deal with the EU would have to 'buy down' the currently scheduled tariff rate of 30%. During his comments before the deal was announced, he pointed to a recent US agreement with Japan that set tariff rates for many goods at 15% and suggested the EU could agree to something similar. Asked then if he would be willing to accept tariff rates lower than that, Mr Trump said 'no'. Joining Ms von der Leyen were Maros Sefcovic, the EU's chief trade negotiator; Bjorn Seibert, the head of von der Leyen's Cabinet; Sabine Weyand, the commission's directorate-general for trade, and Tomas Baert, head of trade and agriculture at the EU's delegation to the US. The US and EU seemed close to a deal earlier this month, but Mr Trump instead threatened the 30% tariff rate. The deadline for the Trump administration to begin imposing tariffs has shifted in recent weeks but is now firm, the administration insists. 'No extensions, no more grace periods. August 1, the tariffs are set, they'll go into place, Customs will start collecting the money and off we go,' US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick told Fox News on Sunday. He added, however, that even after that 'people can still talk to President Trump. I mean, he's always willing to listen'. Without an agreement, the EU said it was prepared to retaliate with tariffs on hundreds of American products, ranging from beef and car parts to beer and Boeing planes. If Mr Trump eventually followed through on his threat of tariffs against Europe, it could have made everything from French cheese and Italian leather goods to German electronics and Spanish pharmaceuticals more expensive in the United States.

Donald Trump announced a trade agreement with the European Union Sunday that will cut tariff rates down to 15 percent on imports from the trade bloc, while US exports will be tariff-free. The president spoke alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland as he announced the news. 'All of the countries will be opened up to trade with the United States at zero tariff [for U.S. exports],' Trump told reporters, shaking von der Leyen's hand. 'We are agreeing that the tariff straight across for automobiles and everything else, will be a straight across tariff of 15 percent. So we have a tariff of 15 percent; we have the opening up of all of the European countries, which I think I could say [those markets] were essentially closed,' said the president. He also touted a number of impending EU investments, including a purchase of military materials. Von der Leyen confirmed: 'It is 15 percent tariffs across the board.' 'We have a trade deal between the two largest economies in the world, and it's a big deal. It's a huge deal. It will bring stability. It will bring predictability. That's very important for our businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,' said the European Commission president. The announcement comes ahead of the Trump administration's planned August 1 deadline for enforcement of the president's so-called 'reciprocal' tariffs. Trump had threatened to hike that rate to 30 percent in a letter this month. Asked about U.S. concessions in the deal, and the apparent imbalance of the U.S.-E.U. tariff rates going forward, von der Leyen cast the agreement as meant to address existing issues, and told one reporter: 'The starting point was an imbalance, a surplus on our side and a deficit on the U.S. side.' The president briefly answered questions from reporters, though he claimed not to hear one about his deputy attorney general (and former personal attorney)'s meeting with Ghislaine Maxwell, imprisoned accomplice of Jeffrey Epstein. He also claimed to have told the respective leaders of Cambodia and Thailand that the two countries needed to cease armed clashes along their respective borders in order to secure trade agreements with his administration. The president would go on to complain that the U.S. was not sufficiently praised for its investment in the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an Israeli-led effort to provide aid in Gaza that appears to have utterly failed to avert widespread famine and has long been labeled an effort by the Israeli government to save face by its critics.
