India's Kidambi Srikanth booked a spot in the men's singles quarterfinals of the Canada Open Super 300 badminton tournament with a commanding straight-game victory over Wang Po-Wei of Chinese Taipei on Thursday.
The 2021 World Championships silver medallist and a key member of India's victorious 2022 Thomas Cup team, Srikanth, defeated the world No. 71 with a 21-19, 21-12 scoreline.
Srikanth found himself on the back foot early in the first game, trailing 5-11 at the mid-game interval. However, the world No. 49 staged a spirited comeback, drawing level at 18-18 before taking three of the next four points to clinch the opening game.
Wang began the second game brightly, racing to a 6-1 lead. But Srikanth responded with a seven-point surge to move ahead 8-6. Though Wang managed to regain a narrow 11-10 advantage at the interval and led 13-10 shortly after, Srikanth wrestled control back with a stunning run of nine consecutive points. He closed out the match with ease, sealing his place in the last eight.
Srikanth, who reached the final of the Malaysia Masters earlier this year, is now expected to face top seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals.

Srikanth was also 13-10 behind in the second game but recovered to win it and went on to close out the match in 41 minutes. Srikanth, who finished as runners-up at the Malaysia Masters in May, will face top seed and Olympian Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals. Srikanth's compatriot and world No. 57 Sankar Subramanian also joined him in the quarter-finals after a 21-19, 21-14 win over Chinese Taipei's Huang Yu Kai, who is 63rd in the men's singles badminton rankings. Sankar Subramanian will go up against Olympian and world No. 12 Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in the next round. The two players have met once in the past, with the Japanese shuttler emerging triumphant following a straight games win in the Orleans Masters in March. Meanwhile, the only remaining Indian in the women's singles at the BWF Super 300 tournament also progressed to the quarter-finals. Shriyanshi Valishetty, 75th in the women's singles rankings, beat world No. 45 Letshanaa Karupathevan of Malaysia 21-15, 21-14 in 35 minutes. She will face world No. 69 Amalie Schulz of Denmark in the quarter-finals. The 18-year-old Indian defeated Amalie Schulz in their only previous meeting at the Abu Dhabi Masters in 2023. India's doubles campaign at Canada came to an end on Wednesday after mixed doubles top seeds Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto bowed out after losing to Spain's Ruben Garcia and Lucia Rodriguez.

Srikanth will face the top seed and current World No. 6, Chou Tien-Chen, in the last eight. Valishetty, 18, continued to impress in Ontario with another composed 21-15, 21-14 win over Malaysia's Karupathevan Letshanaa in the women's singles draw, setting up a quarter-final clash against Denmark's Amalie Schulz. Twenty-one-year-old Subramanian, meanwhile, will take on third seed Kenta Nishimoto (WR12) in the next round, after breezing past Chinese Taipei's Huang Yu-Kai with a clinical 21-19, 21-14 performance.
