
Milk before or after cereal? Scientists finally settle the age-old debate - so, do YOU agree with their method?
When it comes to eating breakfast, do you put the cereal or the milk in the bowl first?
It's the subject of ongoing discussion online, as some argue for pouring the milk before adding their cereal.
Former sprint Olympian Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who has appeared as 'Nitro' in the BBC 's Gladiator series, is one of the controversial few.
In a video uploaded to TikTok, he can be seen pouring milk into an empty bowl with the caption: 'Of course I pour my milk first'.
To take the contentious method further, he then puts the bowl in the microwave to warm the milk up, before adding some Choco Wheaties.
He wrote: 'Who's triggered? Don't hate me! Warm cereal for the win,' before adding '#milkfirstthencereal'.
Now, scientists have weighed in on the controversial topic – so, do you agree with their thoughts?
Speaking to MailOnline, Barry Smith, founding director of the Centre for the Study of the Senses and professor of philosophy at the University of London, explained that cereal won't go soggy as quickly if it's added to a bowl of milk.
However, it will be better coated if the milk is poured on.
Timing is key, he said.
'Of course, it depends what the cereal is,' he said. 'The very earnest nuts and bolts granola from health food stores probably needs a good soak, while sugar laden flakes may dissolve quickly.
'Everyone will have their preferred tolerance, and a little-known fact is how sensitive we are to texture and how much that affects food acceptability.
'Think of people who like their scrambled eggs runny, or firm, their meat well done or raw. We can put people on a scale and they will not be happy at the other end.'
We don't taste food all at once, he explained, and we change their texture by chewing, crunching or melting them in the mouth.
For example, chocolate changes from a solid piece you snap off a bar to something that melts into a gooey, luxurious molten lava flow that we love.
'As foods we chew change their textures they change their flavours,' he said. 'The interesting thing about cereals is that we change their texture before we eat them by adding milk.
'So timing is the key whether you put the milk in first or last.
'Experimentation is best to discover when they hit their peak texture – the bliss point - for you.
'That also changes as you eat, so the cereal may start a little too hard and end a little too soggy and what you are trying to optimize is the time or number of mouthfuls when it is just right - the Goldilocks Principle.
'Of course, by the time you finish the last, soggy pieces, you are often rewarded by that sugar rich milk, which many people find even more delicious than the cereal.'
Another 'milk before cereal' TikTok user, who has the username @chisme, explained: 'Guys, this is the right way.
'Because look – now I know how much milk there is and I know how much cereal to put.
'And if I need more cereal, I'll put more cereal. Perfect milk-to-cereal ratio.'

Shelby Roach, another TikTok user, uploaded a video showing her boyfriend looking mortified.
'My boyfriend is offended that I was going to pour him milk in this bowl before the cereal,' she said in the clip.
When he protests that the cereal should go first, she replied: 'But then the cereal gets soggy.'
Meanwhile an Australian milk brand, Riverina Fresh, uploaded a video saying: 'Unpopular opinion. When you make cereal, it's 100 times better when you pour the milk first and then pour the cereal second.
'It keeps the cereal crunchier for longer, and it's just a far superior experience.'
Professor Charles Spence, an experimental psychologist at the University of Oxford, said: '"Plip, plop, splash" – that is what you get if you add the milk first, rather than the ubiquitous "Snap, crackle, and pop" that has sold so many boxes of breakfast cereal over the years.
'Surely you want the milk to splash over top to ensure maximum flavour in your milk, while preserving crunch for as long as possible.
'No one, after all, likes soggy breakfast cereals.'
He said that many will argue the answer to the 'before or after' question is a matter of ritual.
'Whatever ritual you have, no matter what the reason behind it, well ritualized food preparation and consumption can undoubtedly make food taste better,' he said.
A Kellogg's spokesman said: 'We know that people eat their cereal in all sorts of ways – whether it's with ice cold milk, with no milk at all or we've even heard from cereal fans who add peanut butter or protein powder to their bowl of cereal.
'Some prefer to soak their cereal for the perfect amount of time until it's soft – others are hardcore fans of crunchy cereal.
'We've been serving up cereal at breakfast tables since 1906 and the most typical way its eaten is by adding milk after the cereal, otherwise things could get messy.
'But if you're a fan of more crunch in your bowl, the milk first approach could be the way to go, as less of your cereal is submerged, and it crucially avoids spillages.'
Meanwhile Nestle - who produce the popular Cheerios, Shreddies and Nesquik cereals - says there is 'no rule' when it comes to milk first or cereal first.
'If you're aiming for perfect cereal-to-milk ratio and optimal crunch, you should start with the milk first and add cereals gradually to match the quantity of milk in the bowl,' it says on its website.
'If you feel offended by the idea of going with milk first, you'll be happy to know a lot of people do their cereals the other way around.'

Nurses punched in face at Swindon hospital violent children's unit
Nurses have been assaulted and "punched in the face" amid violent behavioural problems at a hospital's children's unit, staff have told the April, nurses at the Great Western Hospital (GWH) in Swindon say a series of troubled teenagers have assaulted nurses, hit another child and verbally abused very young patients and their incidents have included a patient who "ripped a TV" from a wall and broke a sink. Numerous staff are now taking sick leave.A spokesperson for the GWH said: "Our children's ward is often the only place available locally for vulnerable children and young people up to the age of 18 with complex medical and mental health needs." Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership closed the Riverside adolescent mental health unit as a "temporary measure" in February its continued closure means GWH has to do its best to cope with teenagers suffering form psychiatric conditions. The unit provides care to children up to the age of 18 and the hospitals does not have an adolescent mental health ward as an alternative. Statistics obtained by the BBC show that in the spring there were around 20 incidents relating to the behaviour of inpatients that involved harming themselves or that time, 10 staff, other patients or family members were assaulted. 'Nothing has changed' The BBC has spoken to several nurses from the unit who say up to 15 members of staff have been off work because of said one nurse who remains off work was left seriously injured after being assaulted two years ago and has suffered ever since with hearing loss and PTSD. The nurses all want to remain said: "We kept saying what is it going to take? Still nothing has changed."Is it going to take for a child to get hurt. We then had a child hurt on the ward."The nurse added that the stats were likely lower than the real number because staff find it difficult to find time to report them. The nurse described how she felt some incidents were not being dealt with seriously enough."It is often put to us these children are unwell so in terms of reporting to the police we are made to feel we are doing wrong against the child."We are a secure ward and have to buzz people in and out."It's restrictions like that and some of the mental health patients we have to remove ligatures such as a hoody they then don't like because we are stopping them from hurting themselves."The biggest trouble is we do go up to 18. Most children's wards go to 16. it almost feels like people run scared because it is children." 'Punched in face' Another nurse said: "A lot of children are medically fit to go home. No one wants to take them because of their escalating behaviour. "It has caused a lot of holes in walls, damaged pipes and lots of staff being hit with people being punched in face."The nurse went on to describe how four registered mental health nurses were unable to restrain one teenage girl who was also verbally abusing staff."It is having a massive impact on patients and parents."She added: "One of my colleagues went off sick as this girl was smacking her head against the wall. The registered mental health nurses were just nurse said they have an "assessment unit for children to be assessed" which was then closed. This has left the hospital unit dealing with these cases."One teenager was ripping TVs off the wall, she broke a sink. The whole wall has had to be replaced it has ... led to probably at least 15 staff being off sick," the nurse nurse said that managers had done very little to address the situation apart from introducing a 'safe room' which has not been opened yet. Another nurse said: "We had a young person who was with us because she had taken an overdose and her behaviour escalated to the point that she was being looked after by three registered mental health agency nurses . "Her behaviour escalated and she assaulted nurses and security staff. She punched quite a few people." An NHS report in 2024 highlighted the difficulties of nursing teenagers on hospital wards alongside younger South West director of the Royal College of Nursing, Susan Masters, said it is a national problem, adding: "This trust (GWH) is the local provision. There isn't another provision anywhere else for these young people to go which is why its very difficult here."Children with physical health difficulties, young people with illnesses and procedures need a bright, distracting fun environment."Children and young people with mental health distress need the opposite-very calming very sombre. The other issue of course is specialist nursing staff."So currently these children are being cared for in an acute unit with children's' nurses that are not necessarily trained in specialist mental health services."A statement from GWH trust said: "We have individual rooms providing privacy and division between age groups, alongside two dedicated rooms for patients experiencing a mental health crisis."Many of the children and young people we care for need specialised care and we are planning to recruit specialist mental health nurses so that we have the expertise to better support children and young people with severe mental health needs."It's unacceptable that NHS staff face violence and abuse and we do all we can to keep our staff, patients and visitors safe."This is a national issue, however these incidents can be extremely distressing, and we offer a package of mental health support to our staff, which includes de-briefing sessions and counselling services."Our Never OK campaign, in partnership with Wiltshire Police, encourages staff to report all incidents and the police regularly visit the hospital and support our own security team."

Teen Lily King says 'Mum I love you. I'm sorry. Goodbye' before holiday tragedy
Lily King, from Buckinghamshire, collapsed in her mum Aicha's arms during a family holiday in Morocco, following an allergic reaction from food served at a restaurant A teenager told her mother: "You know Mum, I love you. I'm sorry. Goodbye" before she collapsed in her arms following an allergic reaction on holiday. Lily King died four days later from a cardio-respiratory arrest caused by anaphylaxis and triggered by food. She had eaten a tiny piece of carrot at a restaurant in Morocco - where the family had been on holiday to celebrate the teen completing her first year of her economic degree - but instantly experienced allergy symptoms. Within minutes, Lily, 18, was gasping for air and losing consciousness despite taking an antihistamine tablet and using her EpiPen. Her mum, Aicha, recalls: "She said, 'You know Mum, I love you. I'm sorry. Goodbye.' And she collapsed in my arms." The tragedy comes after a man recently died after his wife ran him over in a car park in a "tragic accident". Since Lily's inquest in June, her parents Aicha, 57, and 75-year-old Michael have used the media to urge others to be extra cautious eating out while on holiday. They had chosen a restaurant they had been to before - and that Lily loved - during a previous trip to Rabat, Morocco but her dish was served with vegetables and a sauce Aicha, a fluent Arabic speaker, hadn't requested. It was a small bite of one of these rogue vegetables - a carrot - that led to Lily's swift cardio-respiratory arrest. Speaking this week, Aicha, a carer for the Epilepsy Society, said: "Neither the waiter nor any of the doctors spoke English. Without Arabic, it would have been impossible to make myself understood. It is my mother tongue and yet I still couldn't get the care Lily needed... My daughter was my best friend, my everything... Without her, our life is nothing. "I was so, so careful with everything Lily ate. I cooked everything at my mum's house and brought it to the hotel so we could eat together. We never ate hotel food. The only thing I ordered was tea." Lily, who was from Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, was diagnosed with severe allergies to fish and seafood, nuts, sesame, milk and eggs when she was two-and-a-half. Her asthma inhaler helped open up her airways if she ate one of the foods she was allergic to during her childhood. The only time the student had a severe reaction that warranted emergency hospital care was in January 2024, five months before the Morocco trip, when she bought a burger at a music festival in Exeter, Devon, and shortly afterwards suffered anaphylaxis – the most extreme allergic reaction. Reflecting on this, Michael, who is a set decorator in the movie industry, told Mail Online: "Before then, we didn't think her allergies were life-threatening. This one could have killed her. It changed everything. "We want to spread a warning to anyone travelling to other countries where the laws are different to those in the UK – don't trust anybody,' adds Michael. We had 18 beautiful years with Lily. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would lose her like this."

Tributes paid to 'legend' James Whale after death aged 74
Whale had fought a long battle with kidney cancer, having been first diagnosed in 2000, with doctors predicting he had three months to live. However, he had surgery to remove one of his kidneys and six years later, he launched the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer to fund research and raise awareness of the disease. His cancer returned in 2020, and it was revealed that it had also spread to his spine, brain and lungs. We are sad to announce that James Whale MBE died earlier today aged 74, following a lengthy battle with cancer. As a broadcasting legend for over 50-years, James will be missed by so many at TALK and the wider News UK family. The broadcaster's final column was published just hours before he passed away, in which he revealed he's "happy to go now and feels at peace" after moving into a hospice. He is survived by his wife Nadine and his two sons James and Peter. Whale first came to prominence in the 1980s as the host of The James Whale Radio Show on Radio Aire in Leeds. From 1995 to 2008, he hosted a night-time radio show on talkSPORT (Talk Radio 1995–2000), followed by stints on LBC 97.3 and various BBC radio stations. He covered shows on talkRADIO from October 2016, including James Whale Unleashed. Very sad to learn of the passing of broadcasting legend @THEJamesWhale after his long battle with cancer.
