Serghei Spivac (17-5) has gone 8-5 since joining the UFC in 2019. Following a three-fight winning streak that saw him notch three finishes, he's gone 1-2 over his three most recent bouts. After two cancellations against would-be opponent Shamil Gaziev, he'll look to put away another contender waiting in the wings. Spivac stands 6-foot-3 with a 78-inch reach.
Waldo Cortes-Acosta (13-1) has gone 6-1 inside the UFC since 2022. After dropping the only bout of his UFC tenure, he's notched four consecutive victories ahead of this one, with his latest win coming against Ryan Spann in impressive fashion. He'll hope to jump the rankings as he searches for five straight. Cortes-Acosta stands 6-foot-4 with a 70-inch reach.

Why Serghei Spivac Will Win
Last Fight: (L) Jailton Almeida – TKO (punches, R1)
Last 5: 3-2
Finishes: 7 KO/TKO, 8 SUB
Serghei Spivac comes into this bout following a loss to a motivated Jailton Almeida, and it certainly wasn't his best showing, but the gap in athleticism and grappling could be to blame for the defeat. During this bout, he'll be much more in control when it comes to the grappling, as his opponent has shown signs of weakness when being taken down. From top position, Spivac can make himself very heavy and is likely to steal some rounds if he's able to land his takedowns effectively.
Spivac will also be working with a significant eight-inch reach advantage, and although his opponent is a much stronger boxer, Spivac has shown improvements with his stand-up game over the last few fights. Still, he hasn't been nearly as aggressive in engaging opponents over the last few bouts, so it's certainly something he'll have to improve ahead of this fight.
To be successful here, look for Spivac to engage and go to the clinch much more often, where he's most powerful. He has a knack for throwing opponents off their balance, and it ties into his ground game very well. From there, he has a chance to dominate with his strength while negating the pressure boxing style from Cortes-Acosta.
Why Waldo Cortes-Acosta Will Win
Last Fight: (W) Ryan Spann – KO (left hook, R2)
Last 5: 4-1
Finishes: 6 KO/TKO, 1 SUB
Waldo Cortes-Acosta comes into this bout following four-straight wins for the longest streak of his UFC tenure. He's often praised for his fluid boxing as a heavyweight and he certainly has the combinations to show for it. He does a great job of maintaining a safe distance while rifling combinations off, but he'll have to work at a reach disadvantage where he should be more focused on countering and being defensive than trying to knock Spivac out right away.
Two of his last four wins have come by way of unanimous decision, so Waldo Cortes-Acosta is slowly proving he's capable of winning the bout in a multitude of ways. His takedown defense is a solid 66% up to this point, but he'll certainly want to avoid mixing things up on the ground against someone like Spivac.
In order to win this bout, Cortes-Acosta will have to remain diligent in staying on his feet while breaking away from the clinch of his opponent. If he's able to do so, it opens the door for another dominant striking performance as he'll certainly have the more fluid boxing throughout this fight.
Final Serghei Spivac-Waldo Cortes-Acosta Prediction & Pick
This should be another entertaining clash between talented heavyweights as they boast differing styles heading into this fight. Waldo Cortes-Acosta has made a name for himself as one of the more fluid boxers in the division, while Spivac will be looking to maul his opponent on the ground and create a significant discrepancy in the grappling department.
Still, Waldo Cortes-Acosta has shown great ability to force wrestlers to stand and strike with him due to his sheer size, so I don't expect Spivac to have his way throughout much of this fight. Either way, we should see most of this fight take place on the feet, where Cortes-Acosta will sport a significant advantage.
For our final prediction, we'll roll with Waldo Cortes-Acosta to get the win as he picks-and-pops his way to a close decision.
Final Serghei Spivac-Waldo Cortes-Acosta Prediction & Pick: Waldo Cortes-Acosta (+120)

Is Massachusetts about to legalize online casinos on your smartphone?
So who's putting this on the fast track? It's unclear who, but it will need get through House and Senate leadership. A spokesperson for Advertisement For those already in the gambling business, the stakes are high, and the politics of it all have made for strange bedfellows. On one side is homegrown sports betting behemoth DraftKings and arch rival FanDuel, which support the bills and stand to benefit by providing the digital platforms that power these games. Joining their camp: MGM Resorts International, which operates a casino in Springfield and online gaming platform BetMGM. Advertisement A DraftKings employee in the lobby of their Back Bay offices. Lane Turner/Globe Staff On the other side is Encore Boston Harbor, the Everett casino operated by Wynn Resorts, and UNITE HERE Local 26, the politically influential hospitality union with many members who work at Encore; they oppose the bills, saying online gaming would cannibalize the brick-and-mortar casino business and reduce jobs in the industry. And then there are those who are wary for fear it will create more problem gamblers by making it even easier to bet on your phone. Supporters and opponents of online casinos squared off during a DraftKings and FanDuel argued that online casinos should be legalized because there's already a robust illegal market, so why not regulate and tax it? According to the mostly on websites based outside the United States. It's the same argument that's been made to legalize sports betting in many states, including Massachusetts, ever since the Supreme Court struck down a federal ban in 2018. Since sports betting began in Massachusetts in early 2023, it has flourished here with billions of dollars wagered, generating more than $300 million in taxes and assessments, according to the Advertisement Type 'online casino in Massachusetts,' and you quickly realize how we're all one Google search away from trying our luck. Seven states, including Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Jersey, have legalized internet casino gaming, and proponents estimate that if Massachusetts levied a 20 percent tax, the state could generate $230 million to $275 million a year in new revenue. (That's the same tax rate as online-only sports betting, while land-based resort casinos are assessed at 25 percent.) And with state lawmakers facing tough budget decisions this year, David Prestwood, a government affairs manager at DraftKings, knew exactly what to tell the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure. 'This money may be especially critical for Massachusetts in the face of anticipated federal funding cuts and reductions in state and local aid,' he said at last month's hearing. Online casinos may seem no different than sports betting, but their appeal runs broader and deeper than placing a bet on a baseball game. And internet gambling is far different than going to a brick-and-mortar casino, which requires getting there and interacting with staff. Online, you can gamble in your pajamas. 'There's all these friction points where the player has the chance to think twice with about placing the next bet,' said Mark Stewart, a board member of the Advertisement Stewart, who is general counsel of The Cordish Companies, a Baltimore real estate and casino developer, testified virtually at the hearing, while Encore Boston Harbor president Jenny Holaday provided written testimony opposing online gaming and warned how it could result in a 'dramatic reduction in the associated taxes that Encore pays to the Commonwealth,' a sum that has totaled nearly $1 billion since the casino opened in 2019. The owner of Encore Casino in Everett is pushing to stop a bill on Beacon Hill that would broadly legalize online gambling on slots and poker games. John Tlumacki/Globe Staff Encore employs about 3,300 workers, about a third of whom are part of Local 26. A union representative also testified against the bills, citing an independent research analysis funded by the (A It's shaping up as a test of who has more clout on Beacon Hill — Encore and its coalition of boots-on-the-ground supporters in the unions and Everett, or tech companies that have deep pockets. Brick-and-mortar casinos could get in on the game, too. The legislation sets aside licenses for the state's existing casino operators, along with four licenses for internet gaming platforms. Along with slots, they'd allow poker, blackjack, craps, and even games with a live dealer. But what about the I can't imagine state Treasurer and Lottery chair, Deb Goldberg, being happy about online casinos, which could eat into lottery profits. The lottery in fiscal 2024 netted nearly Advertisement 'If online gaming expands, we must ensure the Lottery is supported and stays competitive,' Goldberg said in a statement. 'Every dollar spent on private platforms could mean less for our cities and towns and early childhood education.' Then there are concerns about addiction, with calls to the surging since sports betting was legalized. Lia Nower, director of the Center for Gambling Studies at Rutgers University said what drives up the risk of problem gambling is giving people more options. 'There's a cumulative effect,' she said. 'The more things that you gamble on, the more often you gamble and the more venues in which you gamble, the higher your risk.' In this digital era, online casinos may feel inevitable, yet internet gambling is so new we don't really know how addictive it could be, especially among young bettors. Remember how we initially thought social media was just fun and games? Critics of online gaming say it reduces barriers to problem gambling, compared with going to a brick-and-mortar casino. Steve Helber/Associated Press Yet the pressure will be intense from a gaming industry that's keen to keep expanding online. Boston-based Why? Just follow the money, explains Nower. 'It's the cash cow for the industry,' she said. State Senator Paul Feeney — who is sponsoring the online casino legislation with state Representative Daniel Cahill — said lawmakers are well aware the need to carefully weigh all the costs and benefits, in particular the investments made by land-based casinos which he described as 'sacrosanct.' Advertisement Yet there's also an urgency with the state facing budget pressures. 'I wouldn't say that anything is on a fast track,' said Feeney. 'There's a renewed interest in looking at how we can maximize tax revenue without broad-based tax increases on residents.' We tend to give the Legislature a hard time for moving too slowly, but this time we shouldn't. At the very least, the state should conduct its own independent analysis, rather than relying on industry-funded studies to weigh the impact on existing land-based casinos and the lottery, and whether it would create a new class of problem gamblers. Online gaming is too big of a gamble to not get this right. Shirley Leung is a Business columnist. She can be reached at

UFC full fight video: Robert Whittaker crushes Ikram Aliskerov in under two minutes
Robert Whittaker has oddly become a staple of Middle East cards as of late. Saturday's UFC on ABC 9 will mark the third-straight fight Whittaker (26-8 MMA, 17-6 UFC) has taken in the region, as he's split the previous appearances at 1-1. He's set to headline the event at Etihad Arena vs. former ONE Championship titleholder Reinier de Ridder (20-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC). Prior to his loss to Khamzat Chimaev in October, Whittaker crushed Ikram Aliskerkov in 109 seconds in June 2024. The victory was the second-quickest of his UFC tenure and was the headliner of the promotion's first trip to Saudi Arabia. Ahead of UFC on ABC 9, relive Whittaker's highlight reel finish of Aliskerov in the video above.

‘He's In So Much Trouble' - Brock Lesnar 'Banned' From Major Sport
'He's In So Much Trouble' - Brock Lesnar 'Banned' From Major Sport originally appeared on The Spun. For over 20 years Brock Lesnar has been hailed as one of the most entertaining people in combat sports and professional wrestling. But according to one insider, he won't be getting work in one major sport anytime soon. Appearing on the MightyCast with Demetrious Johnson, former UFC champion Daniel Cormier revealed that Lesnar is currently banned from professional wrestling everywhere. Cormier said that he could not detail what Lesnar did to get into trouble, but simply stated that he's in "so much trouble." 'Brock is on the banned list right now,' Cormier said. 'Brock got into so much trouble. You know what Brock did. I ain't telling you on air what Brock did. Brock is in so much trouble.' Many fans and news outlets have speculated that the ban stems from Lesnar being named in the sexual assault and trafficking lawsuit against former WWE top executive Vince McMahon. Some very damning text messages that were allegedly from Lesnar were made public during the initial stages of the suit. It stands to reason that WWE might treat Lesnar as radioactive while the lawsuit is dealt with given the allegations against him. The controversy all started early in 2024 when former WWE employee Janel Grant alleged and shared evidence that she had been coerced into a sexual relationship with McMahon and later trafficked to Lesnar and former WWE executive John Laurinaitis between 2020 and 2021. Lesnar was subsequently removed from all upcoming WWE programming, all promotional materials and has seldom been mentioned by the company in a year-and-a-half. That said, it really isn't clear how Cormier - who is not a WWE-specific insider - would know whether Lesnar is banned from all of professional wrestling. It's a pretty big umbrella category that goes well beyond WWE or even its immediate rivals here in the United States. It's probably a good thing that Lesnar has been more focused on his daughter Mya's collegiate athletics career as a shot-put star. Being a supportive father in public and avoiding any headlines of his own can only help him while the legal system does its thing.'He's In So Much Trouble' - Brock Lesnar 'Banned' From Major Sport first appeared on The Spun on Jul 22, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 22, 2025, where it first appeared.
