Kumaraswamy challenges Congressto secure Tamil Nadu nod for Mekedatu
HD Kumaraswamy
Saturday challenged the Congress govt in Karnataka to get its ally in Tamil Nadu to approve the Mekedatu project, claiming he could obtain the Prime Minister's approval in just five minutes if it succeeded.
"I stand by what I said earlier. Congress neither has the strength to convince the Tamil Nadu govt nor to confront it. Without that, the Mekedatu project cannot be implemented. If they can convince their ally, I will get the PM's approval in five minutes," he told reporters.
Kumaraswamy said, "It was the Congress that had earlier claimed it would implement the Mekedatu project. They have been silent for two years and are now shifting the responsibility onto me.
How can I proceed? Let them first get their ally's consent. If the Tamil Nadu govt is boldly challenged and Mekedatu is taken up, then only it would be possible."

Criticising Congress for what he described as token gestures, he remarked, "What's the point of opening an office for Mekedatu without even convincing Tamil Nadu? Congress functionaries claimed they would implement the project. They should fulfill what they promised. They came to power after holding a padayatra in the name of Mekedatu. In the past two-and-a-half years, they have merely wasted time. If they now try to blame me, how is it justified?"
The Mekedatu project is a proposed reservoir and drinking water project across the Cauvery river in Bengaluru South district.
While Karnataka argues it is crucial to meet Bengaluru's drinking water needs and includes a hydropower component, Tamil Nadu opposes the project, fearing it would reduce the downstream flow in violation of Supreme Court orders and interstate water-sharing agreements.
Taking a swipe at state minister Priyank Kharge's recent remark about banning RSS, Kumaraswamy said, "Forget banning RSS, Congress is getting banned everywhere.
The people themselves are rejecting Congress. Let them first try to preserve their own existence. Don't give statements to divert attention from real issues."
Alleging that Congress functionaries were targeting him due to political anxiety, he said, "They are afraid of me. That's why Congress leaders constantly chant my name. Ever since BJP and JD(S) formed an alliance, Congress has lost sleep. So they keep targeting me."

Income Tax Appellate Tribunal rejects Congress' appeal against tax demand on ₹199 crore income
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) has rejected the Indian National Congress' appeal against an income tax demand on an income of ₹199.15 crore, saying that the party filed its returns past the deadline for availing of exemptions due to political parties, and that it also violated cash donation limits. 'We thus conclude that the assessee's return filed on 02.02.2019 is not within the 'due' date to make it eligible for the impugned exemption,' the ITAT said in its order. According to the order, the Congress filed its income tax return for the financial year 2017-18 on February 2, 2019. As per the Income Tax Act, 1961, political parties are allowed a later deadline for filing their returns. For the financial year 2017-18, that deadline was December 31, 2018. In its return, the Congress had declared nil income for 2017-18 after claiming an exemption of ₹199.15 crore under Section 13A of the Income Tax Act, 1961. However, the ITAT ruled that, since the return was filed late, it was not eligible for this exemption. In addition, the assessing officer also found that the Congress had received ₹14.49 lakh as cash donations, which exceeded the limit of ₹2,000 per individual. According to changes made to the Income Tax Act made through the Finance Act 2017, political parties can receive donations above ₹2,000 only through formal banking channels, not cash. Overall, the party's declared total receipts of ₹199.15 crore against expenses of ₹197.43 crore, thereby showing a surplus of ₹1.71 crore. However, the Income Tax Department's assessment order on July 6, 2021, denied that the income could be exempted from tax, making the full receipt amount taxable. The Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) then upheld this decision on March 28, 2023, following which the Congress approached the Appellate Tribunal.

Farmers stage protest, seek clearance for Kalasa Banduri Project
Farmers under the aegis of Kalasa Banduri Horata Samiti staged a demonstration in front of the office of Union Minister for Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi in Hubblali on Monday demanding early clearance for the Kalasa Banduri Nala Project. The farmers, led by samiti president Vijay Kulkarni and others, took exception to the delay in giving environment and forest clearance to the project which has been pending for long. The protestors said that Goa is unnecessarily creating hurdles to the project even after the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal allocating water to Karnataka for utilisation through diversion of water from the Mahadayi basin to the Malaprabha basin. They urged Mr. Joshi to prevail upon the Union government in getting the required clearance for the project. They subsequently submitted a memorandum on behalf of the samiti to MLA Mahesh Tenginakai and the former Minister C.C. Patil who visited the spot. Samiti vice-president Babajan Mudhol and others led the protest.

Will move SC with contempt plea against Karnataka on Mhadei issue: Goa CM
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday informed the legislative assembly that the state government will file a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against Karnataka for carrying out activities that are aimed at diverting the Mhadei river water. The CM also accused the neighbouring state of being involved in activities aimed at diverting the river water. The two adjoining coastal states are embroiled in a dispute over sharing the Mhadei river water. The BJP-ruled Goa has accused the Congress-governed Karnataka of planning to divert the river water by constructing two dams. The Mhadei river originates in the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, and flows through Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra as it empties into the Arabian Sea at Panaji in Goa. The Centre had set up a tribunal which decided on sharing the river water between the three riparian states -- Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Goa and Karnataka along with Maharashtra have appealed against the tribunal's order on sharing water by the three states in the Supreme Court, and the matter is sub-judice. Opposition MLAs in the Goa assembly on Tuesday cornered the Pramod Sawant government in the House over its failure to stop Karnataka from conducting illegal activities. Raising the issue, independent MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco sought to know the progress of the case pending before the apex court against the verdict of the tribunal on the share of Mhadei river water. Speaking on the issue, Sawant said Karnataka has been actively involved in activities aimed at diverting the Mhadei river water. "We cannot stop their activities as they are happening in their jurisdiction. But the Goa government has taken every step to counter their attempts to divert the Mhadei water," he said. The chief minister added that he had personally met Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav over the issue. "I have discussed the matter and the Union ministry (has assured that it) will not give any permission to Karnataka to conduct any such activities," he said. "The state will file a contempt petition against Karnataka before the Supreme Court in the matter," the CM added. State Water Resources Department Minister Subhash Shirodkar said the state government has been monitoring the activities of Karnataka. The opposition benches, including Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, Goa Forward Party (GFP) MLA Vijai Sardesai, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Venzy Viegas and others participated in the discussion.
