7 Metro Detroit Restaurant and Bar Closures For June and July
Summer has brought plenty of new restaurant openings to Metro Detroit, but also a handful of shutters. From a beloved Eastern Market favorite to outposts of popular restaurants like the Balkan House and Anita's Kitchen, the following is a list of spots that have recently said goodbye or plan to close in the coming months.
The Shutter, a regular roundup of Detroit and metro Detroit's restaurant closures, is your resource to find out what's on its way out. The list is by no means comprehensive. Have information on another closing? Send all tips to detroit@eater.com.
July
EASTERN MARKET — The end is near for beloved Eastern Market institution Rocky Peanut Co. The store announced in an Instagram post that it will close, 'With no exact date, but timeline by October 2025.' Rocky's opened a retail location in Eastern Market in 1971 and moved into its current space in 1981. That building is now also for sale along with shelves, carts, and other fixtures. In a message to the Free Press, owner Patricia Russo says it's the 'right time to step back' and enjoy retirement. Rocky Peanut Co. is popular for selling nuts, candies, dried fruits, spices, and specialty items. 2489 Russell Street.
GROSSE POINTE WOODS — Despite vowing to stay open earlier this year, Pendy's Grosse Pointe closed in July. The restaurant filed for bankruptcy in March, with owner Susan Pendy saying she planned to reorganize finances and continue operating. However, in a farewell post on Facebook, Pendy writes, 'We have had many challenges to overcome and unfortunately, I just can't do it anymore.' Pendy's served seafood, steaks, and classics like shrimp scampi and French onion soup in a country club setting. 20930 Mack Avenue.
HAMTRAMCK — Döner kebab specialist the Balkan House will close its original location in Hamtramck in September. The restaurant has been open since 2019 and offers Eastern European cuisine. Owner Juma Ekic cites multiple factors for the decision, but says the move will allow her to expand hours at the Ferndale location and focus on the food truck side of the business. 3028 Caniff Street.
LAKE ORION — Anita's Kitchen announced the sudden closure of its Lake Orion location through a Facebook post in mid-July. The Lebanese fast-casual restaurant thanked customers and wrote, 'An opportunity has presented itself that has allowed us to make a thoughtful business decision that aligns with our long-term goals.' Anita's Kitchen still has restaurants in Ferndale, Downtown Detroit, and Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The menu offers pita sandwiches filled with chicken shawarma, falafel, or gyro; salads; rice bowls; burgers; and smoothies. 45 W. Flint Street.
June
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Bar Louie is now down to one Michigan location. The tavern and grill chain closed its outpost at the Mall at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township late last month. This comes after the company shuttered restaurants in Livonia and Auburn Hills and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this past March. The last Bar Louie left in the state resides in Royal Oak. 17460 Hall Road.
LIVONIA — The western suburbs lost a longstanding favorite when Corsi's Restaurant closed in late June. The Italian spot had served the Livonia community for almost seven decades and was also an event venue for weddings and banquets. Restaurateur Bernard Webster bought Corsi's and plans to remodel the space, revamp the menu to feature Italian and Southern comfort fare, and reopen as Truth Banquet and Mr. B's Pizza, Ribs and Soul Food. 27910 Seven Mile Road.
WESTLAND — Memphis-based chicken chain Gus's has closed in Westland, leaving only one location remaining in Metro Detroit. The restaurant is known for spicy fried chicken, sides like collard greens, baked beans, and mac and cheese, and a variety of pies for dessert. Gus's shuttered a Royal Oak outpost in 2024; the Michigan businesses are operated by local franchisee Schmaltz Hospitality LLC. 35505 Ford Road.

Domo Sushi, lauded chef's Hayes Valley standby, appears to close suddenly
An in-person battle with a social media influencer that went viral was the downfall of three-month-old Kis Cafe in San Francisco's Hayes restaurant announced last week that it would be closing permanently in light of accusations that the chef had been rude to the influencer. Now, the subsequent media backlash may (or may not) spell the doom of another restaurant affiliated with James Beard-nominated Chef Luke Sung. A Reddit thread on Saturday announced the impending closure of Domo Sushi, a cozy sushi restaurant also nestled in Hayes Valley, a block over from Kis Cafe. Sung's LinkedIn lists him as the 'operator' of Domo. The thread began with a user posting a photo of a piece of paper hung in what appears to be Domo's storefront at 511 Laguna St. It reads: 'Domo is closing. Last service 8-2-2025. Thank you for your support for the last 17 years.' 'According to a staff member, the owners, which also owned recently closed Kis Cafe, let all staff know that yesterday today (sic) (8/2) would be their last day, closing after 17 years,' the caption below the photo, posted by a user named 'ieroec,' reads. The Chronicle attempted to reach out to Sung but was not successful. A Domo employee who was contacted Saturday appeared to confirm that a closure was discussed Saturday morning, but also expressed uncertainty about whether that plan was still active by the evening. 'The owners this morning decided not to close yet,' the employee said, but quickly added: 'We don't know, actually.' Domo has yet to provide an update on the status of its operations on its social media accounts, and the note posted in its storefront notably does not include a reason for the potential closure. But Reddit users have theories. 'Seems a bit odd if a restaurant can't survive two weeks of bad social media PR of a different restaurant,' said one user in a comment on the thread. 'I wonder if it has anything to do with commercial real estate lease jumping significantly last year and they weren't able to negotiate the price,' posted another. 'Maybe it's a retirement thing?' wondered a third. Earlier this month, Sung was ousted as chef and co-owner of Kis Cafe after news of his clash with a food 'microinfluencer,' known on Tik Tok by her handle @karlalobb162, at the establishment went viral. The content creator, whose real name is Karla, posted a video in which she alleged that Sung instigated a hostile interaction between the two, after she showed up at the restaurant for a planned promotional collaboration. Sung, she alleged, dismissed her number of followers as insufficient. Sung has since issued a public apology, which was posted to Kis Cafe's Instagram page. 'It was important for me to first apologize to Karla privately and step away from Kis Cafe before publicly apologizing,' Sung wrote, and acknowledged being 'condescending, hurtful, and intimidating' to the influencer during her visit. Public records show that Sung has leased Domo's space at 511 Laguna since 2007, and appears to own the building that housed Kis Cafe through a trust.

Mooncake Trapp: A Delightful Fusion Of Tradition And Taste
Introduction To The Mooncake Culture Mooncakes are not just desserts; they are a symbol of reunion and tradition. For centuries, families have shared mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival as a token of love and unity. In recent years, the mooncake industry has transformed from traditional to trendy, offering gourmet versions, creative packaging, and international flavors. One such recent innovation is the mooncake trapp , a unique concept that combines the elegance of traditional mooncakes with the novelty of creative presentation and premium branding. Understanding The Mooncake Trapp Concept The term mooncake trapp refers to a sophisticated style of mooncake packaging and presentation, often used by luxury brands or high-end bakeries to elevate the customer experience. Unlike ordinary packaging, it typically includes artistic boxes, drawer-style compartments, LED-lit casings, or even music-box-like mechanics. Mistral in talks with VC firms, MGX to raise funds at $10 billion valuation, FT reports
(Reuters) -French artificial intelligence startup Mistral is in talks with investors, venture capital firms and Abu Dhabi's MGX to raise $1 billion at a valuation of $10 billion, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The company launched in June Europe's first AI reasoning model, which uses logical thinking to create a response, as it tries to keep pace with American and Chinese rivals at the forefront of AI development. The funding would accelerate the commercial rollout of Mistral's Le Chat chatbot and support continued development of its large language models, the report said. MGX and Mistral did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. The startup raised 600 million euros in a Series B funding round that valued the company at 5.8 billion euros last year. Industry observers consider Mistral as Europe's best-positioned AI company to rival Silicon Valley leaders, though the French firm has yet to achieve comparable market traction or revenue scale. Mistral counts Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Venture Partners among its investors. Sign in to access your portfolio
