Domo Sushi, lauded chef's Hayes Valley standby, appears to close suddenly
Now, the subsequent media backlash may (or may not) spell the doom of another restaurant affiliated with James Beard-nominated Chef Luke Sung.
A Reddit thread on Saturday announced the impending closure of Domo Sushi, a cozy sushi restaurant also nestled in Hayes Valley, a block over from Kis Cafe. Sung's LinkedIn lists him as the 'operator' of Domo.
The thread began with a user posting a photo of a piece of paper hung in what appears to be Domo's storefront at 511 Laguna St. It reads: 'Domo is closing. Last service 8-2-2025. Thank you for your support for the last 17 years.'
'According to a staff member, the owners, which also owned recently closed Kis Cafe, let all staff know that yesterday today (sic) (8/2) would be their last day, closing after 17 years,' the caption below the photo, posted by a user named 'ieroec,' reads.
The Chronicle attempted to reach out to Sung but was not successful. A Domo employee who was contacted Saturday appeared to confirm that a closure was discussed Saturday morning, but also expressed uncertainty about whether that plan was still active by the evening.
'The owners this morning decided not to close yet,' the employee said, but quickly added: 'We don't know, actually.'
Domo has yet to provide an update on the status of its operations on its social media accounts, and the note posted in its storefront notably does not include a reason for the potential closure.
But Reddit users have theories.
'Seems a bit odd if a restaurant can't survive two weeks of bad social media PR of a different restaurant,' said one user in a comment on the thread.
'I wonder if it has anything to do with commercial real estate lease jumping significantly last year and they weren't able to negotiate the price,' posted another.
'Maybe it's a retirement thing?' wondered a third.
Earlier this month, Sung was ousted as chef and co-owner of Kis Cafe after news of his clash with a food 'microinfluencer,' known on Tik Tok by her handle @karlalobb162, at the establishment went viral. The content creator, whose real name is Karla, posted a video in which she alleged that Sung instigated a hostile interaction between the two, after she showed up at the restaurant for a planned promotional collaboration. Sung, she alleged, dismissed her number of followers as insufficient.
Sung has since issued a public apology, which was posted to Kis Cafe's Instagram page. 'It was important for me to first apologize to Karla privately and step away from Kis Cafe before publicly apologizing,' Sung wrote, and acknowledged being 'condescending, hurtful, and intimidating' to the influencer during her visit.
Public records show that Sung has leased Domo's space at 511 Laguna since 2007, and appears to own the building that housed Kis Cafe through a trust.

Couple on a ‘Tight' Budget While Wedding Planning. Then Groom Buys Pricey Present for Sister Without Asking
The 29-year-old woman is worried about her finances after her fiancé agreed to pay for his sister's wedding dressNEED TO KNOW The 29-year-old woman is worried about her finances after her fiancé agreed to pay for his sister's wedding dress When they talked about it, her fiancé told her she was being "selfish" People agreed with the woman, telling her that she needs to have a conversation with her fiancé about their financesA bride was left stunned after her soon-to-be husband offered to pay for his sister's wedding dress before she even bought her own. On Reddit, the 29-year-old woman explained that she and her 30-year-old fiancé are currently planning their wedding. Since their "budget is tight," they've "been trying to be smart about every expense." Recently, her fiancé's 25-year-old sister "announced she's getting married next year, and in the same conversation, casually asked him if he could help pay for her dress." The man immediately said yes, without even discussing it with the poster. 'We haven't paid for my dress yet. We haven't even locked down our venue deposit. But somehow, he's financially committing to his sister while I'm trying to make our wedding work on a spreadsheet,' the woman writes. When she brought it up to her fiancé, he told her that she was being 'selfish' and that 'family helps each other.' "I get that but isn't our wedding the priority right now?" she questions. While the woman is trying to understand her fiancé's position, she 'feels like this was a major decision made without me that affects both of us.' People in the comments section reassured the woman that she's not overreacting and urged her to have an honest conversation with her fiancé about their finances in anticipation of their big day. 'When you are in a relationship and finances have merged, these things need to be a joint discussion and choice," one commenter wrote. "Whilst family does help and support each other it cannot be at your detriment. "You need to have an honest and open conversation with your partner which is non accusatory and emotion based. Seek boundaries and acknowledgement during this conversation and revisit it after a few days to ensure you are on the same page moving forward," they continued. "How you approach money and familial obligations are so key to your relationship so it's best to ensure you are on the same page moving forward." Another person echoed this sentiment, noting that her fiancé's hasty decision was "a red flag." "You are struggling financially to pay for your own wedding and he's committed to paying for his sisters dress? That' just stupid," they wrote. "What happens when you are married and your money goes to his family? Think long and hard and explain to him that unless he stops being a doormat the wedding is off. Family helps family when they can. They don't help when they are on a tight budget themselves.' Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword

Man Refuses to Pay Girlfriend's $9K Credit Card Debt, but She Says He Needs to 'Invest' in Their Relationship
A 30-year-old man is seeking advice on whether or not he made the right choice to set a boundaryNEED TO KNOW A 30-year-old man is seeking advice on whether or not he made the right choice to set a boundary His girlfriend asked him for $300 to $500 a month to help pay off her credit card debt he didn't know she had The man refused and now his girlfriend is acting "cold" toward himA man is at odds with his girlfriend after she asked him to pay off some of her credit card debt. The 30-year-old man sought advice from Reddit on whether he had made the right decision by telling his 28-year-old girlfriend that he wouldn't share the burden of her debt. "So we've been together almost three years. Things have been good overall," he begins. "We've talked a lot about the future and were planning to move in together soon like actively browsing apartments kind of soon." However, last week, she told him that she had "around $9,000 in credit card debt," which he never knew about. "I asked why she didn't mention it earlier and she said it was embarrassing and she thought she could get a handle on it before it became our problem," he explains. Then, his girlfriend told him that she wanted to "delay" moving in together unless he was willing to help her pay off the debt. She proposed that he could cover $300 to $500 a month to help "speed things up," but he told her he "wasn't comfortable with that." 'I don't have any debt. I worked hard to stay that way. I've had my own money struggles, so I've always been careful with spending," he explains. "And while I don't mind helping out here and there in a relationship, I don't think it's fair to expect me to take on someone else's financial mess, especially before we even live together." His girlfriend didn't see it that way and told him he was being 'unsupportive' and that if he "really saw a future with her," he'd be "willing to invest" in it. "But to me that's not what this is. It feels more like I'm being asked to bail her out and I'm just not okay with that," he adds. While the man remained firm and refused to give her the money, now things are 'awkward." "She's barely texting back and when we talk, she's cold. I feel like I'm being punished for setting a boundary," he concludes. "But I also don't want to start living together on the wrong foot feeling like I'm financially responsible for her past choices." People in the comments section of his post told him that he was making the right move by not giving her the money. 'This is a problem she created. You are not her checkbook,' one person commented. 'Run, dude! Any partner who hides their debt, then tries to guilt you into paying it, then gaslights you when you say no is not the person to build a life with,' another person wrote.
