Max Verstappen bests his F1 title rivals Piastri and Norris for British Grand Prix pole
SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Max Verstappen showed he had the pace when it mattered most as he beat Formula 1 title rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to claim pole position Saturday for the British Grand Prix.
Verstappen went fastest by 0.103 of a second to beat Piastri's time, with Norris third, .015 further back, after both of the McLaren drivers made small but costly errors.
Lewis Hamilton, a record nine-time winner of his home race, was also in the fight for pole but had to settle for fifth after a relatively slow end to his lap.
Verstappen had seemed pessimistic about having the pace to challenge the McLarens at Silverstone — Ferrari had been closer than Red Bull in practice — and he described his car as 'so difficult' over the radio partway through the session. Even so, he found the pace for pole.
At Silverstone, 'you have to be really committed and that's really enjoyable,' Verstappen said. 'It's a big boost for the team as well and excited to go racing tomorrow.'
Piastri lost time with a slight slide in the last corner on his final run, while Norris clipped a curb on an otherwise strong lap.
Piastri heads into Sunday's race with a 15-point lead over Norris, while Verstappen is third, 61 points off the lead.

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche added former Seattle head coach Dave Hakstol to their staff Tuesday as an assistant to boost a power-play unit that struggled in the postseason. Hakstol joins an Avalanche staff under coach Jared Bednar that includes Nolan Pratt, goaltending coach Jussi Parkkila and assistant/video coach Brett Heimlich. The 56-year-old Hakstol will direct a power play that features Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar but scuffled against Dallas in the first round of the playoffs. The team was 3 of 22 on the man advantage in a series that went seven games. Colorado also allowed seven goals in the Stars series while short-handed. After the season, the team parted ways with assistant coach Ray Bennett, who was in charge of the power play. Hakstol served as the first head coach in Kraken history and was in charge from 2021-24. His team made the postseason in 2023 and eliminated the Avalanche in the first round of a series that went seven games. He finished 107-112-27 with Seattle. 'Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and experience behind the bench and will be a great fit on Jared's staff,' Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said in a statement. 'He has an extensive coaching background with a lot of success and will be a valuable addition to our team.' Hakstol also was the head coach in Philadelphia for parts of four seasons and went 134-101-42. Before the NHL, Hakstol spent 11 seasons as the head coach at the University of North Dakota, leading the team to seven Frozen Four appearances. In international competitions, he won a pair of silver medals as an assistant coach with Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship in 2017 and 2019. The 2017 squad featured MacKinnon and the 2019 team had Avalanche goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. 'This is a proud organization with a lot of talented players,' Hakstol said. Celtics' Brad Stevens shuns idea team is in a rebuild with Jayson Tatum out
BOSTON (AP) — Even before Jayson Tatum limped off the court with a torn Achilles tendon during the Celtics' Eastern Conference semifinals loss to the New York Knicks, Brad Stevens knew big changes would be on tap for the franchise this offseason. Yes, big spending on free agents and contracts had lured in key players like Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis who, combined with stars Tatum and Jaylen Brown, ultimately helped Boston capture the NBA championship in 2024. But keeping the core of that roster intact next season with Tatum possibly missing all of it while rehabbing from his injury would have come with a combined payroll and luxury tax bill of more than $500 million. And as a team exceeding the second apron of the salary cap, it would have also meant additional penalties limiting ways they could sign or trade for players. 'We've known for a long time that hard decisions were coming,' Stevens said Tuesday on the decisions to trade both Holiday and Porzingis , which both became official this week. 'The second apron is why those trades happened. I think that is pretty obvious. And the basketball penalties associated with those are real. ... So that was part of making the decision to push and put our chips on the table and go for the last two years.' Now under that dreaded second apron, it's also brought about a different way of looking at what's next for the Celtics. As the team's president of basketball operations, Stevens knows their approach will have to change while Tatum is out. But as a former coach, he also said he's never going to put a ceiling on any team's potential. 'My expectations are always the same — compete like hell to win the next game,' he said. Stevens said he doesn't want to hear any mention of the term 'rebuild' this upcoming season. 'That's not going to be part of the lexicon in our building, and that's the way we're going to focus moving forward,' he said. While the team could make additional moves to get completely out of the luxury tax, Stevens said it's not the mandate he's been given by incoming team owner Bill Chisholm. 'Bill has been pretty clear from the get go that he wants to make sure that we're prioritizing basketball assets and the ability to retool this thing at the highest level that we can,' Stevens said. 'The most important acquisition that we're going to be able to make in the next couple of years is getting Tatum out of a (walking) boot. We're not beating that one. So that's going to be the best thing that can happen for us.' Both Tatum and Brown, who had minor knee surgery last month, were in the Celtics' facility on Tuesday rehabbing. According to Stevens, Tatum was moving 'really fast' in his walking boot, while Brown was already getting shots up and is expected to get full clearance for basketball activities soon. In the meantime, Stevens said he's completely comfortable with Brown being the team's focal point on the court. He thinks it's a challenge that Brown welcomes and one that he's proven an ability to excel in during previous times Tatum has been sidelined by injury. Italian soccer great Giorgio Chiellini joins LAFC ownership group
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Italian soccer great Giorgio Chiellini will be returning to Los Angeles FC as part of the club's ownership group, the team said Tuesday. The 40-year-old Chiellini, who spent nearly two decades playing for Italian club Juventus before joining LAFC in 2022, also spent time as a player development coach with the MLS team in 2024. 'Joining the LAFC ownership group is a great honor for me,' Chiellini said in a statement released by the team. 'When I arrived here three years ago as a player, I immediately felt that there was something special about this club. It is an ambitious organization, built by extraordinary people and supported by a community that truly makes you feel at home. That is why, last year, I expressed my desire to become an owner, and now I'm proud to continue this journey and give my support to a project I deeply believe in.' Chiellini, one of the best defenders in the world during his 23-year professional career, retired in 2023. He won nine consecutive Serie A championships with Juventus and the Euro 2020 title with the Italian national team. His final two seasons were spent with LAFC, where he appeared in 45 matches, including seven in the MLS Cup Playoffs and three in the 2023 Leagues Cup. During his many years with Juventus, Chiellini earned Serie A Defensive Player of the Year honors three times in addition to being named to the Italian league's Team of the Year five times.
