For the first time since winning his second Rugby World Cup title and becoming a husband and father, Makazole Mapimpi has played a Springbok game in his hometown of Gqeberha.
The popular player is known for his tragic upbringing, which included losing his parents and his two siblings.
Mapimpi was part of the squad that beat Italy 45-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, 12 July.
On social media, Springbok fans have praised Makazole Mapimpi's mesmerising performance on the pitch in Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The 34-year-old was one of the men behind the Boks's impressive 45-0 defeat against Italy.
He also made history by scoring his 33rd try in 47 test match appearances, making him the third-highest-ranked Springbok to accomplish the feat.
For many, the proud moment was symbolic of Mapimi's 'homecoming'…
Mapimpi had no doubt many South African rugby fans, including his wife, beaming with pride.
Last September, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus dropped a major bombshell when he revealed that Makazole Mapimpi was both married and a father.

Step up your style: Gladiator sandals and ballerina pumps are the must-have trends of 2025

Gladiator sandals and ballerina pumps are taking centre stage in 2025's fashion landscape. Image: Instagram Like any other iconic fashion piece, Gladiator sandals and pumps have stomped their way back into the fashion scene, and this time, they are trendier than ever. This year's fashion scene has seen trends like flared jeans and bandage dresses make a comeback, and millennials are rocking these items most fashionably. If you've ever owned a pair of Gladiator sandals or pumps, consider yourself an iconic fashionista because you have likely braved the fashion trenches and emerged victorious. These shoes were once very much criticised by many the same way they have been admired. You were either so daring and fashion forward for sporting them, or your fashion sense was definitely questioned. Gladiator sandals Gladiator sandals have their roots in ancient Rome, where they were worn by gladiators, hence the name. These strappy sandals were designed for functionality, providing support and protection for the feet during battles. Fast forward to the present time, and they have become trendier and more stylish. Not only can they be worn as sandals, but they also come in heels. They have also been making a comeback on the fashion runways because that's where most trends start, right? This time around, they are trendier than ever, with designers incorporating less bold buckles and less chunky straps compared to the early 2000s statement-making details. They come in different styles, such as the mid-calf designs and the ankle strap design. The strappy shoes strutted their way down several Spring/Summer 2025 runways, making appearances at Dior, Isabel Marant, and Alberta Ferretti, among others. Celebrities like Tyla have taken gladiator shoes from the runway shows to street style. She has been spotted wearing stylish knee-high gladiator heels in most of her music videos and on red carpets. Ballerina pumps Ballerina pumps, on the other hand, have a more delicate history. They originated from the ballet world, where dancers wore lightweight, minimalist shoes that allowed for flexibility and movement. Over time, designers adapted this style for the fashion world, creating dainty, delicate shoes that added a touch of elegance to any outfit. We used to have jelly ballet pumps, and those were trendy; if you did not have a pair, you definitely felt the FOMO. As they return to the fashion scene, they have become trendier and versatile, from mesh designs to satin. Today, ballet flats are the ultimate winter and summer work shoe, striking the perfect balance between comfort and professionalism. They are also easy to style and can pair surprisingly well with pants or dresses.

‘I wanted one Test, now I want one more' – Cobus Wiese on Bok debut

Cobus Wiese finally made his long awaited Springbok debut, after first making the national team squad back in 2018. Springbok utility forward Cobus Wiese tries to bust through the Italian defence during their match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha over the past weekend. Picture: Anton Geyser/Gallo Images It has been a long and difficult road, but new Springbok utility forward Cobus Wiese finally managed to make his debut for the national team, when he came on in the second half of the second Test against Italy in Gqeberha over the past weekend. It was a debut seven years in the making, after he was originally called into a wider Springbok squad back in 2018, only to suffer a serious neck injury that scuppered his early Bok aspirations. At that time Wiese was a 21-year-old at the Stormers, and he has since suffered a few more big injuries that have stunted his career, which included a four year stint with Sale Sharks in England, and a fantastic past season with the Bulls that earned him another call-up into the Bok mix. 'I don't want to say it makes it more special, because obviously it's a massive privilege. But to have that many operations and long term injuries, the biggest one was in the (Bok) squad in 2018, when I broke my neck. And to now, seven years later, be getting that cap, it's amazing,' said Wiese. 'It was worth the wait. It's that old cliché of don't give up and keep on going, and it's true. It would have been a massive honour (to make my debut) back then, and even now it's an incredible honour. 'But the hard work starts now, to kind of stay here and solidify my place. I have always said I want one Test, and after that I want one more. So I think I will stick to that principle. Every week I will work hard, like it's my first one (appearance), just to get one more.' Bok brothers During the Boks' entertaining win over Italy, Wiese was supposed to play alongside his older brother Jasper for the first time in their professional careers, but was unable to after the older Wiese received a red card in the first half for a headbutt on an opposition player. Although they will now have to wait to feature together for the first time, they still added their names to a historic list of brothers who have represented the Springboks over the years, and Wiese admitted that he would support Jasper after his transgression, but would soon be giving him stick for it. 'I don't think you can really put it into words (how special it is). We are the 37th pair of brothers in the history of Springbok rugby. So it's an overwhelming sense of pride. When your brother is on the field or in the same team as you, it's easy to get yourself up for it,' explained Wiese. 'Jasper started and went and cancelled himself for 60 minutes. If he had stayed on the pitch we probably would have played together for four or five minutes (before he would have been replaced). 'So I will probably support him tonight (Saturday). Tell him to keep his head up and try bring some positivity into his mind. But then from Monday onwards he's going to hear about it.'

QuanWessels athletes to represent SA at IMMAF Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi

A group of rising young athletes from the QuanWessels Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Academy in Sunninghill have earned their place on the international stage, following standout performances at the MMA South African National Championships. Several members of the team have been selected to represent South Africa at the prestigious International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Youth World Championships, taking place in Abu Dhabi this July. Under the banner of Mixed Martial Arts South Africa (MMASA), the national championships showcased the country's top junior talent, and QuanWessels made their mark. 'It is with great pride, watching our boys mature into quality junior athletes with 10 years of planning coming into fruition,' said coach Norman 'Chef' Wessels. 'They have done the hours and continue to grow, learn, and mature in our programme. All they need to do now is get on top, stay on top, finish, and win.' The IMMAF Youth World Championships is the premier stage for young mixed martial artists aged 8 to 17, bringing together top athletes from across the globe. For many, it represents a once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete internationally. For Nicholas Sears (13), the road to nationals was not without obstacles. 'It was a major struggle to balance training for nationals while studying for exams at the same time. I just put my head down and dealt with it. Did what I needed to do.' When asked what he would say to his future self before stepping into the cage in Dubai, he said: 'You are gonna 'Fight to the Death' no matter what happens.' ALso read: EFC fighters eye what they want for the future Another team member, Logan Brown, spoke about the personal growth he's experienced through training at QuanWessels. 'I am a lot more confident and comfortable walking around, knowing I can defend myself. I am very excited to compete for South Africa, and to see how I compare to other athletes in other countries.' Even athletes not on the national team, like Stefan van Rooyen, are making the journey to Abu Dhabi to support their teammates. 'Before a big fight, I stay calm by listening to music, doing some light stretching, and visualising the match in my head.' As for his inspiration in the sport, he named UFC star Paddy Pimblett. 'He's fearless, entertaining, and always brings energy to the cage.' For Tiano Marko Massimo Frau, another standout competitor, the opportunity means everything. 'I feel really good. It is really a huge and a great opportunity for me to show the world that, as a South African, we can compete at the highest levels. Never give up, through any struggle, keep training and you will persevere.' 'We're calling on businesses, sponsors, and supporters to help get our kids to the world championships,' said Wessels. 'These children are making South Africa proud. They just need a little help to get there.' Details: [email protected] Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration! Have a story idea?
